Tokina 11-16 T3.0 Cine Lens

I just found out about this, it seems like with how great the standard version is, this just seems like the perfect wide angle for video at this point. Thoughts?

Seems like a silly investment. It's just the 11-16 2.8 in a metal housing with cine markings and gear rings...not worth the extra $1k. Plus, it is still just for cropped sensors...definitely not worth the extra $1k. IMO

If someone was thinking about this lens they should just save the money and either just drop in on Duclos' re-housed version, which (I believe) is converted to work with full frame sensors (correct me if I am wrong here). And if you are looking at that price range, you could just get a cine-modded Zeiss 15 2.8.... =)

yeah, for 1900 it's super not worth it. You could buy almost 4 of the regular version for that much.

The Duclos version isn't converted for full frame. I don't even think thats possible. And I'm pretty sure its even more expensive than this.

But yeah, obviously this lens isn't aimed at anybody on Newschoolers. Any sane owner/operator filming ski edits or personal projects or even some paid freelance gigs would just throw a removable lens gear on the regular 11-16 and call it a day. This lens is aimed at production companies doing narrative productions, where smooth and accurate focus and/or iris pulls are critical. For example a steadicam shot moving from indoors to outdoors while maintaining proper exposure.

It shouldn't cost like 1200$ to make a manual, declicked, version of the same lens... It's obvious who it's made for, but the price is hilarious.

This lens, the dulcos, and the original tokina can all be used on full frame at 16mm. That is one reason duclos did a cine lens; they are so good that they can be used alongside legit cinema lenses. Sub $500 for a 16mm f2.8 (or 11-16 on aps-c, which I believe is the cinema "standard") is unheard of, so another $1000 in modifications is nothing because it has a great image and all the features they need at a comparatively low price.

Also, I wish I could find an article now, but some people say they prefer to shoot with a huge rig full of gears and rods and handles with a huge matte box etc. because clients think it is a big expensive camera, not the same one they bring on vacation. I've also seen the opposite, where a guy taped the screen on his 5dii and used a wide angle then let the camera hang on his neck to take secret videos in North Korea. /endtangent

Do you seriously need a 270 degree focus pull for the 11-16? or geared zoom ring? meh so dumb haha

I've never used the lens, though I hope to get one soon. Does it have any macro capability? That's the only reason I could see it having a pull that long, but the distortion of an 11mm focal length would be accentuated greatly that close. Maybe it is to make it more like other cinema lenses. Geared zoom might be useful on like a blackamgic pocket camera, or shooting raw in the crop mode of a 5d/7d. The huge crop factor would also amplify the range. I think on a 7d in 5x crop, it becomes an 88-128, so maybe a gear could help, but it still does seem a little ridiculous. Still, duclos has shown that people want it and will pay big money for it, so it makes sense for took in a to cash in.

Selling: my 11-16 with glued on focus gear, can install zoom gear for an additional 400. Also de-clicked aperture because my 25 dollar adapter does it automagically. No lens hood, lost it filming out a car window, also bits of plastic broke off dropping it on tar.

With all of this still in mind, an 11-16 cine lens is still stupid as fuck IMO
