Went to ski "The coffin" in whistler and almost fell into it, was on my own and had never done it before when do the the bit without the mandatory airs and caught my skis on the rock so if i put any weight on my skis i would have slid into it and tumbled down. Managed to dig my arms into the snow and lift myself back up but was scary to think i was about to fall in at that time!
Scariest stuff I've experienced hasn't been crashes actually. Skied out of two slides, super scary, and not very proud of that.
Other than that, I think scariest single moment was droppig the infamous double at Nordalsbranten in the SBMC last year. It went well though.
Also hiking/climbing up to the top of Bec des Rosses was super sketchy and very frightening. And it took almost two hours, meaning two hours of constant fear. An adventure for sure.
I'm in a ski club...and I slipped over on an icy ridge just before the season started and broke my tailbone. My doctor took an XRay and told me not to ski for 8 weeks.
So about 9 weeks later I started skiing and a kid fell over in front of me...so I slowed down to check he was ok.
After about 5 seconds a snowboarder comes thundering down the hill and heel stops into the back of my ski bindings.
I flew out of my skis, my legs went up in the air and I landed on my tailbone and broke it again but worse this time.
When the doctor saw me coming back into his office, he threw his pen at me.
Skiing off the side of the summit run, realised I was in complete whiteout. I didn't know which way i was going and i couldn't tell the gradient of the slope. Everything was just white, like I was in heaven or something. Spent half an hour trying to slowly find my way out. Skied into a spot which had phone reception and navigated my way out using google maps.
I was on a pump track through some trees going waytoo fast and my friend was ahead of me and because he weighs like 40 lbs (still just a grom) could not keep his speed up so I had to decide to hit him or hit a tree. The only part that scared me was when I realized that I had to hit something.
Decked the halfpipe right near the edge on a super big hit.
All the force made me go straight down, but it made my legs act like a spring. Force was too close to inwards, so on compressing fully I spring back out and essentially dove head-first straight to the flats of the pipe.
Landed almost directly vertical, just managing to get my head forwards enough to not hit head first.
Lay there convinced I was now paralyzed yelling for help.
Oh, I almost forgot. Scariest thing was getting cought by my slough after three turns in the top of a narrow couloir. Fell, slid on my back for a bit, completely covered in snow. Just as I were to pull my ABS, I got my feet around and could stand up and ski in to a little crest in the couloir, and wait until all the snow had slid past me. That was very scary.
20 ft lip on to a down rail from a jump next to the rail... landed ass first on the rail, thought I had ripped open my asshole. I was seriously scarred shitless.
1. Skiing through the trees and kinda got lost. I was going pretty fast and all of a sudden came over a little roller and hit a 20 foot cliff. I wasnt expecting it at all and it scared the shit out of me. I landed on my head somehow fit through some trees while sliding on my back. Thought I had a concussion but managed to shake it off.
2. Skiing in the thick fog on a powder day. Also going pretty fast. I hit a pretty steep cattrack and it sent me into an immediate backslap across the cattrack. I was pretty much riding on my back across the road. Then I was thrown off of the cattrack still in a backslap and I got the worst shinbang of my life.
Hiking along a ridge with my skis strapped to my bag, we came across a huge boulder that we couldn't get over. Realize we have to shimmy around it on a super steep slope on not the most stable snow.
Went round real slow, had to dig my boots in pretty deep to make sure i didn't slip. Probably would have slid miles if I had.
Was also super scared before my first double backie!
Went to hit about a 10 foot cliff, one ski ejected by a tree on top, I went down said cliff on one ski and had to figure out how to get back to my ski, took an hour to finally hike back to it and almost lost the other ski in the process
Booking it around a bend drunk and high off my ass, the slope had a decent drop and there was someone taking large S turns in front of me I decided to swing wide on the bend and launch off the drop.
I went WAY to wide and launched directly into the woods. I was flying mach 10 mid air straight towards a huge boulder.I landed maybe 2 feet before said boulder and managed to bounce my entire body just left of the huge rock.I was so close i bent my ski pole around my back
My friend who was following me immediately started screaming for help. The look on his face when i got up and started picking up my yard sale was hysterical
skeazlaurenLittle tree run in Niseko last winter, cousin went down first and then I went down and he screamed at me to stop but I didn't hear him then came up onto a 3 metre drop and shat my pants when I knew I couldn't stop. Landed super backseat but rode away and was probably was one of the most stoked moments in my history of skiing as then I knew I was able to hit bigger features and drops that I always thought I would wash out on.
Moral of the story, sometimes something scary that happens can further your skiing. :)
when I first learned 180s i went up to try one and landed to far frontseat(towards the landing) then one of my skis ejected and popped me right in the face HARD. I was surprised I didnt get knocked out. I will say it was funny tho.
This was probably one of the stupidest things I've done, but I fell out of bounds, at night, drunk, on ski blades wearing a tee shirt. I had no idea where to go and ended up just following my buddies path's.
Tried to quickly stop on some ice in front of the trail sign for the park at Waterville Valley when I was maybe 10 or so. My head cracked the sign down the middle and last time I was there (5+ years ago) the sign was still broken. Really glad I was wearing a helmet and will always wear one because of that.
when I was 13 lifty riding down passes me n buddy smoking a doobie on the lift, ski patrol busts us at the top, takes the stash and threatens to tell my dad...
Dr.Prof.JiberI way over shot landing and snapped my tibula and fibula in two.
last year i broke my tibula in 2 places and my fibula in one pace... but i deserved it. I went off a tiny jump in late march in Illinois on blades... I don't blade anymore lol.
Back in 2009, I was on my way to a race after getting off the lift back when I raced for my local mountain. I was bombing down the hill and tried to duck under the closed rope (on the trail that had the race course on it) at full speed. I tomahawked, fell face first into the ground, and I was screaming in pain. I was bleeding from the nose and my mouth, not to mention I was spitting blood along with a tooth out of my mouth. I had two of my bottom front teeth laying on my tongue while still attached to the gums.
I found out later that I fractured my maxilla and had a series of events. I had one tooth put back into place in the emergency room, and I had two years worth of dental surgery done along with having braces for a year and a half. That was the first and most gruesome injury I've ever had.
skied this line in the bc this year with pretty shotty snow conditions but it started pretty mellow and then started to convex into a couloir, i slowed down hard before entering it but my sluff caught up to me and started dragging me in. I managed to slide over to the rocks on the side and pull myself up to safety as i watched this little avalanche slide pass me. Nothing too big to get buried but still kinda freaky.
first of all i broke my knee cap about a week before the season so i was out but i still went to the snow and was sliding down the snow on my but and my heel got stuck in a foot hole and the metal from the leg brace bent and i had to walk up the snow hill with my crutches with my knee bent when it was meant to be straight
Second i was traversing with a mate and we saw this mad pillow line kinda thing so he tried it and did it the fell into a Y shaped tree with his skis getting stuck in the Y and his head down hill, his helmet fell of and ran down the hole hill, i undid his skis and he went looking for his helmet, climbed up on to a rock trying to see it and started swearing really loud while heaps of little 5 and 4 year olds skid past :)
I got too stoked on some glades at wildcat, skied about amile out of the boundary and then dropped a cliff into what i later learned was a river when i felt water in my boots, started freaking out but i eventually hiked back to the bottom
I was sitting on the back of my skis to get speed for a jump. I tried to stand up again right before going off the jump, but i couldn't and ended up launching off the jump in that position and landing right on the knuckle with my back(I was 12 at the time so i was fine)
HIt 8 foot cliff no biggie landed it and on the out run snow collapsedleft ski tip dug in broke toe piece off "Px12s" tomahawked 3 times until my body decided to stop. knocked out for a min and got my second concussion in a 4 day span wasn't good. Straight retarted for two weeks considering getting another new helmet after taking two huge blows to my smith that i got this year.
Easter weekend skiing with my family and this other family it was the first park run of the day and i decided to hit this flat down rail that I had been doing all day the day before. So i drop in hit the flat part but fall right before the down on my skis but sitting on them sliding toward the end of the rail. I hit under the rail knee first and it was those rail that at the end do a hook. So i get up thinking it just hit hard and it's only going to leave a bruise and continue my run. At the end i lift my snowpants and the cut was probably 2 inches across my knee, an inch wide and deep enough to see my knee cap.
tried to front off a cliff. landed directly upside down in a shitton of spring pow. couldn't move for like a minute. honestly though i was gonna drown in snow.
I tubled a hundred feet down a cliff area called "ricochet alley" at the canyons. I just kept going and going...and FUCK, A TREE!*slam* and then the snow falling behind me covered me up and it was hard as fuck to get up.
Probably catching an edge and smacking my jaw really hard concussing myself and then getting up and not knowing where the hell I was or who I was skiing with (It was about 10pm night skiing and I was all alone)
I once lost my balance straight-airing a 17 meter jump with huge pop. I thought I was going to land ass first on the knuckle and break everything, but I just made it to the landing and walked away without a scratch. Nearly pissed myself waiting for the impact though.
