Taking an old snowboard and making a longboard.

So I have an old snowboard that I broke the tail on, its snapped but not broken off. I was thinking that since I have one good tail still, I could cut it and turn it into a longboard, throw some trucks and wheels on it and cruse around with one good tail and the other side just cut into a rounded corner.

Anyone try this? I saw something online where someone took a ski, chopped it in half, put it side by side with trucks and made a longboard. Has anyone done something like this?

sounds like a pretty sweet idea. if it works out well I have like 5 decks ill send you for free to do as you wish with them.

I have not personally done this, but I do know some people who made a number of longboards from old snowboards. Totally doable.

The ride was really quite nice as well.

my friend just bolted longboard trucks onto a old snowboard. we used to whip it around DC all the time

The kid added a board down the middle going from truck to truck to stiffen things up. Might be necessary depending on the feel you want and the current flex of the one you're thinking of using.

My friend made a longboard last year. I think for this you would do everything pretty much the same.
You wouldn't have to make the deck which was most if the work. You would just need cut it how you'd want it.
I'd imagine normal grip tape would work. Or you could use that shitty clear grip stuff.
Then get trucks and cut into the board however you want so you can mount them.
Then you'd pretty much be done. You'd just need wheels and all that but that stuff is pretty self explanatory.

Yea, I saw that one in my search... But I want to keep it more of a snowboard, not just use my board to cut out your typical longboard. I was thinking cut it in half, keep the tail, and smooth/round out an edge.

Gotcha. I feel like that could work, but using ~2/3 of the board off center might result in a wonky flex pattern. Maybe not, but all of the ones I've ever seen were like the link -- cut out from the center of the old snowboard to maintain consistent flex. That's the only problem I could imagine, who knows -- might work out even better.

totally doable!! my buddy had this done to his old board but did it in the middle and didn't have a tail on it, just make sure that its not to long because of the flex it could throw the board off

experiment and you can make it work! start long and work your way down till you get it

True, true.

I'd use a sawzall. Probably a finer tooth blade so you don't just shred the topsheet/fibers/core/etc. Go slow and try to use some clamps too -- sawzalls can make whatever you cutting bounce around like hell.

Second thought, a jig saw might work better for you if you have access to one. Still clamp her down though.

I did this and it works ok. My board is really soft and it makes it pretty sketchy sometimes. I did not cut the length down at all and put the trucks around six inches in. This makes the tails too soft too even use. I cut the edges with an angle grinder and then used a jigsaw and that worked pretty well. I will post pics when I get back to my house.

I guess it depends on how much flex you want.

How old the board is, the camber, the flex, and how much of it you use.

I've seen some flexy longboards but idk how the flex of a snowboard would feel for a longboard.

I would def use something cambered. It should hold up fine but no idea if you'll like the flex you get.
