Undeserved win for Man U in my opinion. Arsenal seemingly dominated the game then as their typical luck, Wilshere goes down and Szczesny/Gibbs makes a critical mistake to give United the lead out of thin air. At least Giroud had a nice strike.

you don't have to watch every game to know. watch highlights, reviews, or if desperate enough even just YouTube clips.

arsenal are the single most frustrating team in the world. there's just something about united that breaks them mentally. I'm quickly getting tired of wilshere. he's got a good energy level but he makes too many stupid decisions and can't make his chances count. had he buried that chance early on, they could have built off that momentum. instead they died down

Man Utd may not have deserved to win but Arsenal pretty much deserved to lose. We dominated but failed to score until deep in to stoppage time, not through bad luck but through poor quality.

outside of sanchez we dont have that quality of a player like costa, di maria etc who can finish clinically (even though he blew his opportunity late). if giroud and welbeck can feed off each other and push each other maybe we will get more goals out of them

This is exactly what I'm talking about when I say that people in America assume English teams are stronger than their continental counterparts just because they have heard of them and can name a few players on the team.

I don't pretend I watch every Euro league. Today I watched United vs. Arsenal, Barca vs Sevilla, and Juve vs. Lazio. Of all those games, United vs. Arsenal was probably the lowest in quality. I mostly watch La Liga, epl, Bundesliga, and Serie A. Occasionally I'll watch a Ligue 1 game, but I'll be the first to admit I'm no expert on it.

Again, I would argue that you and many others think the EPL is the best in the world because you're from the USA which gets mostly epl coverage, and so because you don't know as much about other leagues, you make the assumption that they are worse. I will cite your quote of Crystal Palace vs. "whatever fuckoff team in spain in the same positinn" as an example of what I mean; you have no idea who is in 17th in Spain, so you assume they must suck, but you do know who Crystal Palace is, so you assume they must be good. The reality is that you've only heard of Crystal Palace and not Almeria because you live in America, which, as you pointed out, gets way more coverage of the epl than any other league, meaning, obviously, that you are way more likely to hear about the bottom of the table EPL teams than bottom of the table La Liga teams. You say you don't know much about La Liga, yet you seem quite sure that the teams in La Liga are, on the whole, worse than teams in the EPL, which I find curious because how can you have any idea how good teams in La Liga are if you never watch them play?

I am however 100% for a European Super League in which the biggest teams play as their main league. I don't know how it would work (specifics don't matter about something that's never gonna happen) but damn the quality could be so high.

I agree, but it's also ridiculous to only watch one league and then say, because you only watch that league and only know the teams and players in that league, that therefore it must be better than every other league in the world, which is the way that a lot of epl fans seem to think.

fujaromeyour knowledge of the premier league is getting in the way again, based on the fact that you don't even know who's in a similar position in any of the other leagues. Just because you don't know the teams offhand doesn't mean they aren't good. It just means you don't watch them.

i'd say a lot of lower table continental teams could go to crystal palace or wherever and win. it's not like the English 17th is the equivalent of 2nd in every other league.

Here is what I think, assuming that 'foreign' implies a skillful, international player.

Big clubs with money will buy player(s) they believe will benefit the club's performance/attitude/reputation. Personally, I think foreign players add a certain finesse to the game, combining culture and style of play to add an element of excitement to the league and club.

From an entertainment standpoint, foreign players improve the club and league alike. The Barclay's Premier League is a business, as are the other domestic leagues, and clubs will do what they need to in order to please their fan base and generate revenues. If top-class foreign talent will improve attendance and performance, [rich] clubs are usually willing to shell out insanely large sums of $$$$.

Also,
There is a larger domestic presence in La Liga (~65%) than in the BPL, which according to BBC, should improve their performance on an International scale. Looking at the past year, there is definitely not a strong correlation between Spain's league performance (All Spanish CL final last year/Sevilla winning the Europa League) and that of their national team (poor performances at the WC/International Friendlies/Euro qualifiers).

Much like Spain, comparing England's domestic league and national team are two very different things. English clubs lack the ability to consistently perform well on the international stage, as does their national team, so what does this have to say about England's football program? Hopefully the younger generation can bring them success, assuming they learn how to play together.

Clearly you just started watching soccer in late August, so I'll fill you in a little bit: before this summer, Spain had won the last three major international tournaments (Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, Euro 2012. Nobody in England seems to know that the reason England sucks is that young boys in the country are taught that being big and strong is much more important than having a good touch on the ball and a good understanding of a game: they still believe that the heart wins championships, not the mind. Exhibit A: England's performance this summer. This summer, England played their best soccer in the last decade, they actually tried passing the ball a little, were able to create some good chances, and did more than put nine guys behind the ball at all times and one tall guy up front for them to kick it to, yet English fans and the media claim that, because they actually had a tough group and couldn't get out of it, this was the worst English team yet. They seem to have no idea how much better their team looked when compared to teams they've had in the past ten years, and truly believe that England's performance against Italy in Euro 2012, where their strategy was to just defend deep the entire game and hope to god they made it to penalties and looked truly pathetic while doing it, was better than in WC 2014, where they were unlucky not to get points from the game. The ignorance of the English is truly baffling when considering how much they claim to care about soccer.

If you accidentally talk to him, he will not let go, he has you in your grasp, you will endure anekdotes until the pub closes and then pay for his cab ride home to get rid of him.

First of all - no need for the condescension. I fully understand how international competition works, but I don't quite understand how you are able to conclude that my knowledge of soccer is limited to the past 3 months? Regardless, I tried to make it pretty clear that everything I said was purely from a subjective standpoint (my own opinion). Also, I am well aware of Spain's international prominence, however, I think the three consecutive titles are somewhat of an anomaly - we shall see how the younger generation of La Roja perform. Del Bosque's strong coaching philosophy and a very talented U21 side will definitely help ease the transition.

If your philosophy about league and international tournament true, and the Bundesliga has the 4th highest percentage of foreign players (49%) ahead of the Seria A (47%), Ligue 1 (41%), and La Liga (35%), Theoretically, the Spanish, French, and Italian national teams should outperform both the German and English.

I think there's more to it than respective domestic league exposure.

p.s. I was trying to invoke some discussion, you don't have to be an ass about it.

Maybe the condescension was a little unnecessary, but it was pretty ridiculous to just look at this summer's tournament and conclude that having a high percentage of players from a nation playing in their domestic league doesn't translate to international success considering what Spain has done recently and what Germany did this summer. Of course it's not so cut and dry, and there are many more factors that lead to creating a strong international team than just keeping as many local players in the domestic league as possible, but there does seem to be a correlation between leagues with a high number of players from that country and the strength of that country's international team. If you want to discuss more, I'm happy to do so.

To everyone else: I'll try to stop caring less since, but you also don't have to read what I post, if you don't want to. Personally, I think it's more interesting to have a thread that's more than just one or two posts a week that just list the results of certain games, but maybe everyone else disagrees.

PSG vs. Ajax
Man. City vs. Bayern

I'll be watching PSG beating Ajax, ;__; , Chelsea will defeat Schalke (cheeky goal from Huntelaar though) Barca will kill APOEL, Sporting will win as will Shaktar, Bayern will be German and efficient unless van Gaal has another master move planned.

@Watts I won't quote for the sake of the thread, but I think you should pay closer attention to what Im saying. I find it somewhat egotistic for the English FA to attribute their poor form to a domestic influx in foreign players, instead of looking at multiple other fundamental factors working in conjunction (poor management, poor player-coach relationship, discouraged player attitudes, etc). The 'conclusions' I made were just observations of inconsistency in BBC's findings, and I think that although there is a correlation, it isn't strong.

Well it sounds like you agree that England's problems run deeper than Sergio Aguero starting for Man City instead of a British guy (speaking of Aguero, his penalty today was quality).

And Messi has now broken his second scoring record this week. He's now the all time leading goal scorer in la liga and the champions league. You know Ronaldo is going to try his hardest to catch him. And Suarez scored! Hopefully this means the rust will start coming off and he can get back to the form he had with Liverpool last year.

no idea how foster saved girouds header, that was remarkable. sanchez is quickly becoming my favorite player for arsenal. not sure what wenger will do with giroud/welbeck/sanchez though. arsenal really needed that win. but still look pretty suspect on the counter. debuchy coming back will help, i could see gibbs playing left, debuchy right and chambers at d mid or center back for the future.
