There should not be a Winter Olympics

I am all for a world snow sports championship, but the affluence and access you must have to even try these sports limits the pool of athletes. I don't know if such a limited pool of able competitors warrants the title of "Olympics".

Wow you're really dumb. A lot of sports like gymnastics in the summer olympics costs a shit ton more than skiing/ snowboarding. so your "affluence" statement is way off. When I was competing level 9(2 levels or so below elite which is olympic level) it was close to 15 grand a year for gym fees, add in travel fees, leo costs, meet fees, you got 20-25 grand. And that's a pre-elite level. I spent way more on that than I have on skiing. And every sport needs some kind of "access". You can't play hockey without an ice rink, can't do gymnastics without equipment, etc. It may be more difficult to find access to a ski resort like in the summer or if you live down south but that adds challenge into the sport. That would be like saying we shouldn't have surfing comps because you can only surf in certain areas.

he did post in the NHL thread saying hockeys not a sport because of its access to people. homie should just go ahead and say every sport isn't a sport with that piss-poor logic. so my troll sensors are on full blast right now.

If the shoe fits, and cycling isn't as expensive as you would think so I will contest that one. Golf no way, sailing no, rowing, very athletic and I know a lot of people who don't have a lot of money and row, they don't own the boats they row with a club. Also in response to equestrian events I personally am on the fence. While the horses are expensive the riders do not usually own the horses, because of their skill they are brought in to ride them, meaning they would not need 400K to make it to the olympics.

I can't think of a bike that someone would use in the Olympics that would cost less than a brand new ski set-up. But in terms of accessibility, I will agree that cycling, at least in its most basic form, is very widely available.

Most bikes cost 2, 3x more than a single skiing set up (boots, skis, bindings). If you are talking about a quiver, still, bikers have quivers as well.

Exactly. I know some road bikes can be upwards of $15k, especially at the Olympic level.

Anything skating related - access able to anyone. I'll be more Canadians have a pair of skates than a bicycle. Every community in the country has at least one rink and usually more.

Curling - dirt cheap and every community has a rink

Cross-country skiing - cheap

Skiing - most people have some kind of access regardless of location. There are ski hills in the middle of the bald, flat prairies.

It's insanely expensive to get into elite levels of just about any sport, but pretty darn affordable to access just about any sport (exceptions may be equestrian, sailing, etc)

And that's where you're totally wrong.

The majority of the sports in the winter olympics exist because the sports in it were incredibly common place in cold places. Back in the early 1900's, even poor folk had cross country skis, cause that's just one of the ways they got around in the winter. Ice skates? Hockey? Poor areas play on outside rinks.

Sure the elite levels of sports cost a lot of money, but traditionally many of the sports in the olympics did not. Now it's incredibly expensive to become a professional, but that goes for virtually every sport aside from running.

Ummm there are 98 winter olympic events and only 17 of them are "judged" events (I think that's right). MW ariels, moguls, halfpipe ski/sb, slopestyle ski/sb, and 5 skating events.

Summer has gymnastics (I believe there are 16 events just under normal gymnastics), rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, trampoline, diving, synchronized swimming, BMX, diving, and those equestrian sports.


I'd say it's pretty even when you compare how many events there are total to how many are judged.

Ski jumping is based on distance and then they take off style points if you mess stuff up... So it's kind of subjective, but farthest jump usually takes it since you have to have pretty perfect technique to make it the farthest. There are typically very clear winners but sometimes the distance is pretty identical so it goes to who had better technique... sort of like moguls, only moguls puts a greater emphasis on technique and the jumps done.

So I guess it sort of counts... but not really? 4 events depending on if you count it or not.

As fucked up as it sounds this is true. Horseback riding at an elite level is one of the most expensive goddamn hobbies it sucks
