Why Mutiny is one of the best ski movies ever

Ok, so we all got some favorite ski movies; TBC, Session 1242, Long Story Short and so on.

But seriously, Mutiny. No ski movie has ever been made that way. Everything seems fucking miserable and no one seems to enjoy what they're doing. Every other production company is trying to make us feel like skiing is the most fun thing ever, skiing street is the most fun thing ever and skiing pow is the most fun thing ever. Sure, skiing is probably the best thing you can do, but it sure as hell isn't fun all the time.

Skiing street is pretty damn awesome but it's also frustrating as hell. Seriously, it's frustrating as hell. Building shit that doesn't work out as you planned, slamming your stupid face into concrete and trying to get a trick but you just suck a little to much to get it on film. Mutiny kinda showcase all of that, the struggle to get the shot, the misery of getting hurt and damn it's so fucking disgusting when they cut into Shea Flynns shoulder.

It's actually not as miserable as it sounds, Sheah has shoulder surgery(did that), Owens fucks up his knee and Cam Riley is "worried for his sanity at times"(wait what and who fucking isn't?). This might be a little to pretentious but who cares. It's so different from anything we've ever seen and it's so well put together. Even when there's a shitty shot of someone doing something it just makes sense in the movie and it all just comes together.

And the riding. Claytons part in Mutiny has to be the best street skiing ever done(maybe the best skiing ever done) and Sean Jordan is pretty damn good and Cam Riley is pretty damn crazy and Shea Flynn skis damn good even though I liked his 86 seggy a lil bit more. They found so many great spots to showcase the best of every skier.

And hey, they even put some ambient music in two seggys and its really great! Did you ever see that before?

I guess what I'm trying to say is that Mutiny got a lot of hype, but it damn sure deserves more!
Skiing isn't all about fun all the time and it sure as hell isn't about making everything about skiing look super fun to a super fun song.



TL;DR I'm drunk and I really like Mutiny

Hey! I did not say that Mutiny was the best ski movie ever! But I've had a few more beers and I've changed my mind, maybe it is. As for Clayton, where have you ever seen better street skiing?

I would have to agree. And to be honest, I can't remember which one is Mutiny. I get them mixed up. I'm a 32 -year-old dad and I can't relate to the Stept crew or their antics, but I can relate to the cinematography, editing, soundtrack, camaraderie, and passion in their films. I actually think the production feels kind of old school, since it's not over-edited for the ADHD generation. I especially dig the epic Cam Riley segments and the slo-mo. Reminds me of Jaime Thomas segments in skate videos.

Mutiny is an awesome movie. Stept films have always been revealing as far as the work they put in to 'get the shot', which they consistently do.

I watched Mutiny a few times over last summer. The more I watched it, the more I realized that it actually made me nervous, and scared-unlike ANY OTHER SKI MOVIE.

The first time I watched this movie I absolutely hated it.

I thought that it was a bunch of rich, entitled white kids whining about the hardships that their sheltered life presents them with - which are appalling by 'real life' standards. The entire movie was incredibly over-dramatized, and a product of more of the same spoiled white rich kids.

Note: I have said this to both Martini's faces.

However...

After watching it for a few times, I realized something very important - that it wasn't my place to judge whether or not my current life situation had relevance to the skiing in this video. Just because I was growing up, didn't mean there wasn't meaning.

I thought back to the time where the only thing in my life was skiing. It was all that mattered. I wanted to be a pro - and nobody was telling me different... even though I sucked way too bad. In those days, skiing was all that mattered and it was how I expressed myself as a person.

Upon watching Mutiny a few times, I finally connected with the idea that these guys are expressing themselves through the medium they know... and whether or not it is socially acceptable is totally irrelevant. If you're deep into skiing, and street skiing is what you're all about - then this crew is representing what is truly in your soul... and doing so while keeping true to theirs.

TL;DR - Hated mutiny at first, but soon realized that its basically what embodies the soul of passionate skiing.

Mutiny is definitely the greatest movie Stept has ever done, and the best urban ski flick ever done. That being said, I really wonder how they can top such a movie, I'd love to see Stept put out a 2 year project, which would give everyone the good amount of time to film a full part, especially due to the fact that they deal quite often with injuries.

we have said that about every flick stept has put out since network. You have a point there. On the skiing side of things though, Mutiny was the first time everyone was only filming with Stept, and I feel like everyone pretty much put out the best part they could. In the past movies, I could tell myself "Ah if Clayton and Cam would've shot only with Stept their part would that much better", or I could see that a guy could still progress or bring new tricks to the table. Now with Mutiny, they really put it all on the line, the only guy I could see put out a better segment would be ABM, although filming is not his main focus, while I wonder how Shea, Clayton, Cam and Sean can one-up their last part, and bring something new to the table. I feel like they reached a really high point with their skiing in Mutiny, and it's gonna be pretty hard to top that without repeating themselves.

Clayton and sean are the best urban riders at the moment and mutiny makes that really hard to argue.

Claytons part was just too raw. the song they paired him with too was incredible, it totally reflected his style perfectly. Claytons part is definitely my favorite from the movie .

I just rewatched clayton's seg and that was honestly one of the most progressive parts that has been put out in a while. favorite trick was the 4 kink tailpress. sooooo fucked

That movie was full of raw passion. Hell, I even related to some of the struggles those guys went through. I showed it to my mom, and her fist reaction was, :Yuck! Why would they show that?" Skiing in movies has been glamorized and someone had to give that image a slap in the face. Fucking loved that they showed the reality of park/urban skiing, how it takes a toll on your body and mind.

Meh, its based on opinions here, so saying "lol no" to me is kinda like saying "your opinion is worthless" which is kind of a bummer.


His weight seg is heavy, super good, but the production and idea behind the mutiny segment IMO is top 3 segments for me. Its very cinematic and plays so well with the music/editing/filming, it couldve been any skier doing any skiing, the segment is a true showing what stept can do with a segment.

I think his Mutiny seg was overrated, no way is he an overrated skier, his segment didn't show him. Who the fuck 180s 5 floor drops other than Nick Martini? His rail gardens stuff was less heavy than the Hood Crew and a ton of his spots were waaay one upped that year, that's why I didn't like it. It also had so much filler, the rest of Mutiny was so damn good

I thought it was sick, even the first time when I wanted to bitch about the bitching. I liked that it took a different angle on everything. The style has been somewhat applied to big mountain skiing and technical climbing films before, but has mostly always focused more on the danger at hand than the personalities in their relationship to the danger. I liked that about this more raw doc-style approach.

I liked that it showed that skiing really really sucks sometimes, but when you finally beat it, it's absolutely worth all the literal blood sweat and tears.

It's crazy to see Shea, someone who I take for granted, in a different way. I often find myself saying "is Shea dumb?" When he is insanely messed up. I realize that there's so much more physical and mental anguish than you see in a normal segment and he deserves mad respect for what he does.

I can't praise the editing and audio in Mutiny enough. The use of music was amazing. Loved that they went with atmospheric material instead of X rider gets X song. Gave the movie a totally different feel.

Shea flynn's segment in mutiny was just so original and crazy i found it more impressive than weight. Weight was still sick but now a days i am more impressed with cool editing because so many edits are exactly the same

I feel like I wake up every morning and watch Clayton's segment, I agree 100% that there is no better street skiing segment. Since that film came out I've played GVNG - Young Rebel over 100 times on my IPhone because of well it works with the skiing. From the first time I watched to the most recent, it still gets me hyped to ski and to try and create a segment like that. As a filmer thats all I can ask for from a segment. It's an amazing piece and definitely one of the best if not the best segments of all of time, in my opinion.

I'm sober and I really like mutiny, although the first time I watched it I was a wee bit buzzed and no movie had gotten me more hyped since refresh. having watched it at least 10 times since I'm gonna have to say it's probably tied for my favorite all time right alongside refresh.

It was a great movie and I really liked it, but after I saw Freed the Streets (that's the Hoodcrew one that came out last year) I sort of changed my mind. What I initially saw when I watched Mutiny was some of the biggest, gnarliest urban I've ever seen; bigger than Weight, Sunny, Education of Style, or anything. So I came away from watching it the first time thinking "holy cow those guys are the best urban skiers ever and I appreciate why they portray skiing with such a gloomy attitude, since chances are they will kill themselves doing it but they keep trying since they love it so much." Badass.

But then I saw Freed the Streets shortly after Mutiny. After watching for 10 minutes or so, I realized that these lunatic motherfuckers were doing stuff equally cool and dangerous as the Stept guys were, but they didn't seem depressed about it. It all just looked like some guys who get wasted and try to ski some dumb shit, and hey someone brought a camera, neat. The whole thing was way more understated: it had a "whatever, no big deal" attitude rather than "yeah this is REALLY FUCKING HARDCORE and if you have fun skiing you're not hardcore" attitude.

So Freed the Streets changed my mind. It showed me that you don't need a high production film team and Monster girls pulling your bungy to be a decent skier. All you need are giant balls, a spliff or two, and a buddy to hold your gopro. If you are dirty at skiing, and you can do shit that makes me go "wow," then just do it. I'll go "wow" all on my own. If you try to put the risk on a pedestal, then I'll tell you to quit whining.

its true i have never seen a better edited ski move or movie in my life than mutiny. but i dont think its fair to say that clayton did the best skiing ever as its impossible to compare his urban prowess to that of a really amazing big mountain skier. that being said clayton did create the best urban seg ever evered
