In a month my small family is moving to Mendocino county to start a farm. We both just woke up and realized how in the Matrix we really where even though we thought we weren't. We are paying 1150$ together to live in a place with no real opportunity for growth in a harsh environment in which everything has to be imported. I've been making other people lots of money for the last 10 years and little for myself.

It has been very interesting to see how friends and family are taking this. My fiancee gave her 2 week notice last week for her salaried job and her mom is so set in the programming she is against the move no matter how happy it has already made us. I myself have given up both jobs and I'm not even going to tell my family until i'm there because there all so locked into the common way of thinking .Very much slaves to the dollar, already know what there gonna say and don't need to hear it.

Life cost
$575 1/2 rent
$60+ Internets /elec
$150 Food
$160 fuel

$945x2= $1890 just to live comfortably and get to work where there is 0 potential for real growth since both places are far from rewarding and i don't want to end up bitter and angry like those people. Average home price here is way out of my range, and you cant even grow your own food here, cant build a campfire, cant take my dogs to most the beaches on the lake and this economy is ruled by wealthy people who live in San Francisco 11 months a year. Time to leave the Sierras for the Redwoods

Why is deviation from the "norm" such a scary thing to most people? Have you or anyone else done this, move out and basically let go of common society as much as possible for off the grid living? Say no to credit, live in cash and barter, grow your own food and build your own home on your own land with 0 rules?

Its 2015 he should want reliable internet, maybe netflix, and a prepaid cell phone for occasional use hes not going into the woods to fucking die. Don't be jelly that modern technology allows someone to have all that stuff in the woods and not have to reside in a highly costly dwelling.

I am actually super curious about this and would love to hear more when you get the chance! It seems like a really cool idea in theory. I read through the thread and saw that after a year you haven't been able to make the move, what are some of the unforeseen issues that came up? Good luck to you in the future!

Well, the land i was planning on moving too fell through. Cant do anything about it, so we decided to head to minnesota to work and live for free and stack money. I could buy land tomorrow, but not where I want to be. Im looking for a legacy property that i can pass down for generations. So, in the mean time, im living and working rent free. Heading back out west in mid august with plans to do the same for another 6 months to a year before ill have enough to be in the game. Like i said before in the thread, nothing is as easy as planned. But if i give up, we will never get there.
Just to clarify for other posters, this is not the type of live in the woods, read by candle light , make pipe bombs kind of deal . My mission is a fully self sufficient energy and food and income situation. I need technology for that, not the opposite. I am a professional jack of ALL trades so I incur no cost in labor for the things i need to create.

Guess I have to fulfill the dream of ski bumming in style around the country and tying flies and throwing them all summer.

I'm interested, I've been curious for a while about off grid living, not like living in a dirt hut with only candle light, but something comfortable without the bills. I would like to go with mini-hydro power but solar might be more of a reality, and a wood furnace or geothermal heat.

I wired a house for a friend a few years ago, and he didn't want to trench in a gas line so I did it all with electrical heat and hot water. He's out in the country and all he has is an electrical bill thats about $160 to $220 a month.

Home sweet home. WIll have kitchen with custom cabinets( I'm building it all) Storage etc elevated bed and a mobile shop in the back under the bed. Roof will feature rocket box, 2x solar panels and a Deck above the butt end of the van, Plasti dip in dark flat grey is coming with some artwork. Purpose built to live-ski-fish and work. Wall and door behind front seats is already gone. WOOO HOOO- Hippy name though but im cool with it. DreamCatcher

Making progress, Wood floor is in , Wall insulation is in. Time to throw OSB up over the insulation layers and pop up a temp bed frame. Ill be running wire and finishing off cabinets, kitchen and possibly shower shitter room next month when i get back to the west coast. WIll be run 90% off solar might use the deisel to charge with the Alt if its dumping El Nino on us when we are SKIING ALL WINTER.
