Trying to find a good school to study recreation. please help.

Ok so before all of the discouraging comments about me making no money in the future I would like to explain that ive been going to school in northeastern new york and im currently studying to earn a degree in recreation adventure travel and eco-tourism, this also includes a minor in small business management. Recently shit has been hitting the fan at my school and I dont believe my program is going to be running for much longer. Do any of your nsers know of any schools with a similar program? I would prefer to be able to ski a shit ton and be in a good place for studying outdoor recreation. I also would prefer to go to a school that has opportunities for traveling abroad and certifications in AMGA and wilderness medicine. Any ideas?

When schools drop majors if that is already your major im pretty sure you're grandfathered in and get to finish that major. It just doesn't allow new students to major in that area

for sure, i guess i forgot to specify this also. The main professor who pretty much ran the entire program by himself, the same guy who changed my life and inspired me to be the best i can be and to follow my dreams just go laid off. why this happened i have no idea. im starting to realize that my school is losing money altogether and they really dont give a flying fuck about the program im in. i feel like i could get a better educatoin somewhere else. its a private school and i dont want to be spend a lot of money on a half ass education.

Come to Oregon State Cascades Campus. Its in Bend, Oregon and its awesome. I majored in Natural Resources but there is also a Tourism and Outdoor Leadership major. Classes are small. Most students I had in a class was probably 60 and sometimes as few as half a dozen

Seriously, pick up and move to bend....you wont regret it. Ski bachelor, hangout on the deschutes. Its the perfect city for the outdoor enthusiast.

University of Vermont has a great Parks Recreation and Tourism Management Program. I graduated last year with a major in that and a minor in Statistics. You can also minor in Business pretty easily also. Professors are great, there is a mandatory internship program during one semester where they help put you with a company who has already said they will accept interns, and there is plenty of skiing around. bout 45 minutes to both Stowe and Sugarbush. Definitley isnt the most lucrative industry unless you find the right company, but there are plenty of opportunitys to live a good life after college with a degree in it.

WTF that looks amazing why have I never heard of that. If I would have known there was a decent school with a campus in Bend I would have been all over it.


I go to Montana State and we have a ton of recreation and parks programs here. Especially cool because we are so close to Yellowstone and GNP that there are a lot awesome internships and experiences available.

Minnesota State University Mankato

Nationally accredited Recreation, Parks & Leisure program

Three emphasis areas - Resource Management, Leisure Planning & Management, and Therapeutic Recreation

Really really great program. It was my major last year but I decided to go a different route. If you take all three emphasis and get a good internship you'll have a decent chance of landing a job. Check it out. The professors are awesome too.

+1 For Oregon State. I'm a Recreation Resource Management Major at the main campus in Corvallis and it's a solid program in an awesome area. If you want to ski and do cool shit outdoors all the time, I would definitely try and study in Bend though.

I'm at UVM right now minoring in PRT. It's a great program, if I'd known about it before I started school I probably would have majored in it.
And yeah the skiing around Burlington is on point, best place in the east if you're looking to ski a lot.
