GoPro files IPO

It's looking to make $100 million off it. Revenue's been doubling the past three years up to $1 billion in 2013. Thoughts? Do you think this growth can continue?

was just talking to my dad about this. i dont think they can keep it up. there are even the weird dual 3d gopro sets that have been out for a while. theyve saturated the market, i mean what else can they do? add a tiny bit better quality?

Make another ridiculously expensive video for the next version that doesn't use any of the useless features they'll add to it, yet still persuades gapers to buy it?

I could see them carrying their brand into ruggedized point and shoots, as that's what many use the cameras for. I'd also like to see what they do as a media company as they have been slowly moving in that direction.

Better quality will almost always keep a company in business. GoPro has taken over the POV market and has found a niche. So long as that niche survives, they will be successful.

They also may move into a more "camera" oriented situation, making GoPros that can handle rugged terrain yet provide better quality for Hollywood movies.

This. They've defined themselves as the all-weathe, rugged alternative for sports enthusiasts. The could expand into the SLR realm. I actually wouldnt be surprised if after their IPO they were eventually acquired by Nikon.

"Monday's filing revealed that revenue for 2013 came in at $985 million, up 87% from the year prior, while net income clocked in at about $61 million, up from $32 million in 2012. Growth has slowed significantly in the first three months of 2014, down 7% from the $255 million it booked in the same period last year. Net income is down from last year's first quarter as well, falling 52% to $11 million. In a story last year in Forbes, GoPro founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman revealed that the company's revenues had doubled year-over-year up to 2012, a trend which has since ceased. GoPro started selling its first cameras–35-mm film devices–in 2004."

Obviously 1 quarter is nothing in the scheme of things, but it seems its time for a new technology or product to be introduced to keep trends up.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they realize its decreasing. Hence the IPO. Woodman stepped down from the board, owns less than 50% of the company, and is worth over 1 billion. Im pretty sure this is his retirement. The IPO is a good move, if the company starts to flounder, it can be bought out and not suffer like contour

I really hope contour can make a comeback. I know they were bought out and are reopened. Does anyone know when or if the +3 will be coming out?

Very interesting, I'm 110% sure they have something planned for the near future if they plan on going public. Definitely would only make sense in my eyes if they have a truly disruptive innovation currently in Beta testing.

some ideas they might be messing with-

Outdoor Point n Shoot OR Outdoor DSLR/Professional Camcorder (highly doubt it)

Camera Drone (Cant see this being very big)

Streaming/or/Compression/or/Video Hosting

Small TRUE 4k Camera(30/60fps?) + 120fps 1080 for slowmo (but would be expected in the hero4, dont think this is major enough, prob see this during summer)

Some sort of wearable tech sensors for athletes

full smart phone compatibility

any other thoughts?

They're seeking a valuation of around $3 billion.

Seems a bit high to me given that their net income is projected to be only around $50 million for the year. A $1.5 billion valuation is probably where I'd buy in at. There's no doubt in my mind they'll continue to be profitable for many years to come, but I just can't see them growing much.

More then conflicted on this.

IPOs haven't been doing well right off the bat this year. GOPRO is also using the funds from the IPO to pay off dept, and add more to R&D. None of this is going to help raise the stock in the short term. This is also a hyped IPO like Facebook was and is prone to a massive short interest off the bat.

Look up IPOs. We can't just buy into the stock unless you buy from another larger company.

GOPRO is a sick company but its been pointed out to me that they are old tech, and many other companies (Sony) can offer an action cam that is better. Anyone that has a large amount of capital can enter this market and take away a from GOPROs sales.

Many things to think about. Might be best to watch what happens for a few weeks and then jump in.

I agree with Andy. So far, people are willing to pay a huge premium to buy a GoPro and expensive accessories for it. If they don't, innovate, that won't continue. For the average consumer, there haven't been major upgrades in a couple years, and GoPro should have a large launch coming up pretty soon if they don't want to get killed on Wall Street.

Here are the available resolutions and frame rates: 4K at 30fps, 2.7K at 50fps, 1440p at 80fps, 1080p at 120fps, 960p at 120fps, and 720p at 120fps. It appears these cameras are no longer capable of 240fps.

I had a contour and loved it, still do, but the quality of the film is slowly becoming outdated. Honestly, I'm not seeing a bright future for contour. They took to long to drop their new camera. And they onky dropped one, when usually they drop at least 2.

As for gopro, in future years I would like to see some contour features on it. Like easy on/off record/ stop switches. Long battery life. Camera waterproof itself. That would be nice
