I think any reasoned practical person (including liberals who are the most likely to object to this) would be for this method. Considering our current method is failing due to international opposition to the death penalty and therefore a shortage of the right lethal cocktail medications. Thus, I believe this is very cost efficient and a hell of a lot painless than the current method (look up on the failed lethal injection that just happened in Oklahoma if you're unfamiliar.) An interesting sidenote, I guess firing squads fell into obscurity because the people behind the guns had a lot of psychological issues knowing they were responsible for killing so many people-no matter how deserving. And I guess states used to combat that by having a few of the guns shoot blanks and a few shoot bullets, and they wouldn't tell the squads which gun they got so it helped their mind dull the psychological effects because technically they couldn't say for sure they killed the person or if their buddy did. Wild shit.
death penalty is not cheaper then housing. but thats with lawyer fees and everything. It costs california around 4 billion a year for the death penalty

It's not the execution that costs more, its the appeals process, because the state is taking your life, you have a right to more appeals than life in prison and therefore more monetary resources the state uses in the multiple appeals that a death penalty inmate will make.

I think we should remove guards from prison and send everyone convicted of murder, rape, anyone serving a life sentence really, to them. Essentially a free for all. give them a few trucks of top ramen every month. Those psychos don't deserve to be treated like humans.
I probably wasn't clear enough (it was more rhetorical than anything). I don't think there should be as many appeal processes as there are. I don't understand how a state can justify spending that much money to kill 1 person when they could keep 30 in prison for the same price. I guess (its opinion now) there should be a limited appeal process. Obviously there are innocent people who get the death penalty and the appeal processes are there to help them but its hardly cost effective and the number of innocent people who get sentenced to death is minuscule. I think our prison system is just fucked in general.
I'll say this. Most people are not killers. Many will hold themselves back from taking a 'kill' shot. Need to make your firing squad up out of killers.
I'm working in a few different project areas of Chicago and so far this month I've seen one man shot and killed in a mcdonalds parking lot and heard several shootings in one of the shootings a family came home and there was a deranged man in their living room when they entered the room he shot and killed all four of them. I think to be sentenced to death, there needs to be 100 percent concrete evidence such as DNA, or video or something like that which leave no room for error. Some guilty verdicts just don't seem strong enough to put someone to death especially because it's not something that is reversible. I'm all for it tho under the right circumstance.
i like the death penalty, but i don't like it as an absolute mean of punishing all crime.
in some situations, i firmly believe that people cannot be rehabilitated and don't necessarily need "help" but rather need to be put down.
however,
i don't feel like we should just look at a crime as black and white and say that "this warrants the death penalty because it is this level of crime, this does not".
i feel like we have to take a look at the situation, and decide whether or not we feel the person can be helped. i believe in rehabilitation, without a doubt.
but i also believe in punishment, and the nice thing about punishment is that it provides a deterrent. rehabilitation is not a deterrent against crime.
if a kid is bad, you spank him. he is punished, he understands that there are consequences to actions, and so do his siblings. the kid and his siblings now think twice about being bad in the future. if you were to just think "what can we do to help him so that this doesn't happen again", yes, there are benefits to that in certain situations, but in other's you straight up need to punish the crime.

the death penalty is a good thing. it punishes wrong doing, it provides a deterrent. but i think it would be awful if we didn't try to help those who we deem capable of helping and instead just say "fuck it, you fucked up, you're dead. end of story." much like trying to help steer a mislead child to a more righteous path. and i know we've all met that kid who is perceived a "bad child" but has all the potential in the world and was just in a shitty situation. some people CAN be helped. some people CAN'T. i acknowledge both sides.
I believe that the death penalty is the easy way out for people who committed unspeakable atrocities. If it were up to me they would be tortured day in and day out until they succumbed. Many people think torture is inhumane though and I don't make decisions. The system works, for the most part.

Or by actually doing this we glorify murder in way by parading it as a sport in a way thus increasing the murder rate as people become numb to it. Just let em rot or let em hang.

Probably not much. US GDP is actually pretty substantial. To put it in perspective, I think our defense budget is the highest in the world at about 3% of GDP.

Good post. The only way the death penalty should be acceptable is if it is done on a case-by-case basis. Each case has to be looked at and the situation and person who committed the crime analyzed carefully and thoroughly before assigning the death penalty, if a country is going to have it. The rule can't just be that if you commit a certain crime you automatically get the death penalty, regardless of circumstances or evidence. It's just not civilized to do it that way, nor is it just.

a 5 year old absolutely learns a lesson from being spanked. you aren't abusing them, you aren't torturing them without mercy, you're disciplining. children don't understand logic or reason. you can't explain things to them. you give them a spanking and they understand for later that what was done shouldn't be done.
i was spanked as a child, and rightfully so. i'm was never abused nor did i grow up to fear my parents. i grew up respecting rules as i was taught right from wrong. and i'm absolutely going to spank my children too. not to hurt them, not for some sick sense of pleasure. because they too will have to learn that there are consequences to actions.
likewise, i'm going to enroll them in sports and teach them the difference between winning and losing, in music lessons where they have to practice something to improve, and that hard work pays off.
all of these are staples of maturation and i strongly believe need to be embedded in our children's minds before they get to the point where you can't teach them any more and they're on their own making their own decisions without the right foundation.
we have to teach them how to strive for victory but lose with grace and dignity. we have to teach them that wrongdoing is unacceptable and has consequences. we have to teach them that you have to work for things as they're not just handed to you, and the harder you work the more results you get. we have to teach them how to balance work and play, how to treat others as we want to be treated, and to be accepting of everyone around us.
these, to me, are among the more important basic human principles that need to be instilled in our children's lives. spanking, though decidedly cruel to someone who expects that children can be reasoned with and spoken to as an adult, is simply a means of demonstration in a way that your child will understand that will bear no lasting psychological or physical impact long-term aside from the message it delivers.
The real problem with it is that its been conclusively proved that the death penalty is NOT a deterrent for the crimes that would warrant that as a punishment. No one is ever gonna think "Im not gonna rape this person or shoot up this school because I don't want the death penalty."

of course. i think we can all agree that a violent, criminally insane individual isn't really going to be deterred by anything.
it's for everyone else -- the people that are more on the fence that might think twice knowing the severity of the consequences to their actions.
and that's something that we could never really prove, as steering someone down a more righteous path before shit hits the fan is impossible to confirm or quantify, but i think we can all at least admit that it does inevitably happen. in a society with no real consequences, i don't imagine things would be better..

That's not the point, at least how I see it. Society decided that these people had nothing to contribute and would be better off dead. I agree. If you commit a heinous crime such as rape or murder, you don't deserve to live. Plain and simple. I think, like someone mentioned above, there should be undeniable evidence that a person committed the crime before they are killed, but if there is evidence, they should be put down as soon as possible. Our prison systems are filling up, we could easily clear some of them out by killing people that will never again contribute to society. Harsh? Maybe. Necessary? Absolutely.
