Replying to Camping in the Fort Collins/Loveland Area

I am heading out to Cheyenne/Fort Collins/Denver for a wedding and a small vacation. I am looking for a place to camp for a night that is somewhere near where I can park but not a total "car camping" spot (KOA etc). I have camped in west of Fort Collins before but that was a scout camp. Not having amenities doesn't bother me, I've camped/hiked in the mountains before. Whether its free or not doesn't matter. Many of you may say "just google it" but I've done that and cannot really get a grip on a place. It's either a KOA spot or a complete backpacking trip free spot.

Any ideas?
