Road Trip: Miami to Los Angeles

This summer I'm going on a road trip with with a couple of my buddies from Miami to LA. So I come on here asking as to advice as to what might be some good places to stop at while on this endeavor.

The current plan is to leave Miami on June 25th, & fly back to NYC from LA early in the morning on the 4th of July.

If you guys have any experience at any of the places or routes and would like to offer up any advice on the trip, then it'd be greatly appreciated. We're interested primarily in nice towns that are scenic and have good food.

Our route as of now:

Miami ---> New Orleans
-This part of the route is about 14 hours. We will need a couple places to stop at in the meantime.

New Orleans ---> Houston
- This wont be too long of a drive, but maybe some good BBQ joints on the route might be good

Houston ---> Las Vegas
- This amounts to a total of 24 hours. Our route will go through Marfa, the Tuscon, Phoenix, and finally up to LV where we will take a little detour and stop at the Grand Canyon. Any good spots to stop at on the route would be nice.

Las Vegas ---> LA
- Seems like a pretty boring trip from these two places but will look to make maybe a stop.

Make it better by driving Las Vegas to Death Valley up the scenic byway through Yosemite to San Francisco.

Don't get me wrong... I love LA. I lived there for years and go there nearly every month. But the drive from Vegas to SF is amazing!!! Mammoth is filled with international tourists all summer long doing this exact trip. You will get soooooo much more out of it than driving to Los Angeles. If you already have a flight booked out of LA, then just do a quick flight from SF to LA, or Drive the Pacific Coast Highway from SF to LA which is also beautiful.

I do want to go visit San Francisco. I went to LA last summer & found it somewhat boring. BUT, I'm making the trip with a friend from London & two Miami friends who have never been to LA & they'd rather go there than SF given our time constraint.

I'm very stern on this. Do Vegas to Yosemite at least! You can drive Vegas to mammoth... I'll let you stay here (that's how serious I am) and you can skip SF and drive mammoth through Yosemite/kings Forrest down to LA.

I cant really help you with stops along the way, but New Orleans is fucking awesome. One of my favorite cities. Definitely spend a day or two there and just enjoy the music, foods, and crazy people. Check out some local street jazz performers (there are usually some good ones around Jackson square), The preservation hall band at preservation hall (Its touristy, but they performed at Coachella this year), The garden district is beautiful too (like the homes) but I dont know if you would be into that, and of course bourbon street is always wild.

There is also this one smaller area which is really like indie and less touristy and they have a lot of good musicians in a bunch of small cafes and restaurants, it seems like kind of a run-down sketchy area though.

There is so much more to do here but seeing as youre driving cross country you wont have much time.

I appreciate the offer BUT, given that we want to be in LA for 2-3 days, going north towards mammoth & back down would be too time consuming given our constraints. I will probably end up going to SF sometime later this summer if I do get bored with the east coast (as I probably will).

Currently we're scheduled to be in new orleans for a day & a half. Which I'm pumped about bc I've always wanted to go there for the food. We're going to stay at the Ritz for a night so I think our location should be pretty good too.
