Salomon sth2 bindings

i cant stand the know it alls on this website that try to say what gear is better than others because their mommy bought it for them and it looks cool.

im moving out to montana and i have killed many bindings in the terrain park.

I SKI AGGRESSIVE (i also fall aggressive!)

ive killed fks's, px12's, mojo 12's, marker griffons, and the list goes on.

now i swear by the STH's.. but they changed up their design and i am a little nervous. im used to the sty 14 and 16 drivers(and they are the most durable bindings i have ever touched) but i dont know anything about the STH2 WTR 16...

can anyone help me out? its going on my armada JJ's

essentially they are the same bindings. same driver toe but with redesigned afd and roller. the heel is the guardian style heel, I'm pretty sure it functions the same just has a wider mounting pattern.

It could be me, but doesnt the matterial and the baseplate for the heel look less durable? i mean the track for the heal to move on looks plastic... the STH's i have are both on a metal track...

i have sth2 13s i can confirm the track is plastic. not sure about the 16s. i can't compare durability to the original sth but this new version has been out for a while and i have heard of no issues. if anything i have heard of a few people having issue with the original sth track.

If you're concerned about durability of the STH2, pick up a pair of MOJO 15s. Its the only alpine binding I would buy (other than 916s).

I just got the STH2 13's, which are part plastic. When I looked at the 16's tho, they looked to be all metal

I'm not talking about the 12s. I'm talking about the 15/17/18. Whole different ball game. One of the few bindings that can claim the be "all metal". Adjusted properly, they are just as food as my 916s.

its the truth. if they upgrades some of their designs, I would give them the name of "best binding", but right now, that title goes to solly/atomic bindings because of the best toe piece ever contemplated and the fact that they have a ton of tech that gives them the upper hand.

Aside from that, OP, I have two pairs of fks bindings. one pair has over 80 days on it with decently hard use including a shit ton of comps and they definitely have wear, but not structural damage. the other pair is the pair I used this season. I had some serious injuries which only allowed me to ski roughly 35 days this season, and only about 10 of those were in the park. I only put 6-7 days of serious riding (granted I went as hard as I possibly could to make up for the lack of ski days) and have a cracked baseplate, a spring that came out of the heelpiece, and a decent sized chunk of plastic out of one of the toes. They look like they are about to fall apart.

You might have just had a bit of bad luck with FKS bindings OP, because they are proven to be tanks and hold their own with great performance, but there are clearly lemons(or bad luck) in the market like the one I had.

You've killed a bunch of plastic recreational bindings skiing aggressive park? I'm not entirely surprised...

If anything its a more durable heel then the previous version. Having a heel piece run inside a track meant that you could get issues with the track bending under huge loads. The way the new system works its much less lickly to bend as much more of the heel piece is in contact with the track. The heel is even more burly too so if you liked the old sth you will enjoy the sth2 even more.

I'm in the same boat as you with the sth2 13's minus the park skiing. I plan to get them and mount them on my SFB's. I read many reviews that said they are better on a wider ski platform because the overall binding platform is wider. This makes it easier to transfer from edge to edge than the previous salomon binding. I'm about to buy them in the next week for 170$

Do i trust them? Heck yea they are salomon! I can't speak for sure since i haven't tried them yet, but all the reviews are positive. They are just a newer/updated STH. They are 170 on backcountry.com because they are on sale for being last years model. They are normally 250 or something close to that. I'm honestly not woried about the plastic track because i'm a really lightweight guy so my force will probably not break anything. If you are really worried about the plastic, go with the STH2 16's instead of the 13's. They have an all metal heel track i believe.

The plastic heel track is NOT going to break. The actual "track" for the worm screw is metal, and the whole piece is really solid. Their simply isn't the type of stress or leverage to break the track in any way. Plastic gets a bad rap, but honestly it's a very strong and impact resistant material.

I can see in places like the rear side tower design on marker griffons where you would not want plastic (why jesters are very durable, but griffons can break)- but that's not the case here.

Also to clarify- the track for the 13s and 16s are the same. Have both in hand-

Cradlefills- I sent you a PM. I have an extra pair of brand new STH2 13s I bought a while ago laying around I'll let go for cheap.
