Not your usual binding thread...safety issues

I just want to know what the safest bindings are. I know about DIN, so I'm not talking about DIN.

I'm talking the differences in heel and toe technology/releases - I hear a lot of stuff on here about pivot this and pivot that or whatever, but I dont know what each does/means.

What is the best, safest "type" of binding? What do I want to look for in a binding when safety is the main concern?

The properly adjusted and maintained binding is the safest.

If you're primary concern is safety, then probably knee bindings are your best bet. But they are heavy, and durability and cost may be an issue.

Basically all other bindings are going to be more or less the same as far as safety is concerned. FKS/Pivots are less likely to pre-release laterally in the heel, so it'll make it less likely for you to have your DINs too high at least.

Knee bindings will address the rear twisting falls that are the typical cause of an ACL injury. Safety is very subjective to the skier. I am more concerned with a pre release than not coming out at all. On a no fall zone if my ski comes off I have not way to self arrest and that is a big problem. What is safe to you could mean death or injury to me. No binding will be safe for every skier.

I suppose what I'm really wanting to know is what to stay away from...

I hear things like driver toe and shit and I dont know why I should stay away from them...why are they worse?

What else is shunned as far as binding tech goes?

Nothing, Bindings are one of the most debated topics in skiing. For every 10 Marker,look or Soli people out there you will find 10 who will tell you that are shit. Not true by the way. Most will hear from some guy that this or that is better and that becomes law. The fact is the lawyers of the world have made sure that the bindings work for the most part. No one company will save you from all injuries. Skiing is dangerous and hard on the body. Shit happens. Don't blame your gear blame the rider. Just like people on this site will say that X brand of ski is the best and all the rest are crap you will get the same for bindings. Get a set that are with in the DIN range for your specs and go skiing.

And for every 10 of those, there is 1 who prefers Tyrolia, like myself. It is all personal preference. I have skied every major binding there is (axials, fks, axial race, m series, jester / griffon, peak 15 / 18, sth). Pretty much every toe and heel piece that is out there. I will never ski a dildo heel again, for me they are unreliable and unpredictable and do not feel as solid when you click in. And idk what this shit is about driver toes being "worse", but that is wrong. I prefer driver toes just barely over perpendicular spring toes (attack and jester, not sure if there is a proper name for them) and much more than your standard toe.

Im pretty sure tyrolia makes bindings similar to knee bindings as in they release laterally in the heel. Check out the ld12's.

How are these bindings? Looks like they go for about $130 and thats definitely within my price range.

Also, on an unrelated note, which bindings are notoriously heavy? I dont like a lot of swing weight, so I'd like to avoid heavy bindings.

They release really well and feel solid when clicked in, problem is that its almost all plastic, meaning it breaks really easily. If there's a higher din version with more metal I'd get that.

Because any modern binding will work just fine, and all this conjecture about which is safest is stupid- it's opinions that are more often than not mired in bullshit.



Just buy the binding that works for you financially and have it adjusted properly and you'll be fine. If you have to ask, it literally does not matter.

despite what everyone says, but from my point of view, the rossignol fks 140 is one of the safest, more afordable, and fairly light weight. some people swear by them. i just picked up a pair myself just cus they look cool. haha. they also have the longest elasticity on the market, so you dont ever pre release

I have had 2 pairs of these, as said above the outside is plastic. The internals are very robust however so as long as you're not over 160 pounds, and don't smash them you'll be good.

I know they used to make a 14 din version with mettle on the outside, I don't know if they still do.

Also the head Mojo bindings are the same, you can get them on level 9 sports for $120


In terms of safety they do (in my opinion) release better then my axial 2's. They feel good, and when you twist they do release well.

Cons are that they are pretty heavy for the lack of mettle in them.

Less likely to pre-release laterally in the heel, what? It's like you just took binding-related words and inserted them randomly into a sentence.
There are no bindings (except Knee bindings) that do true lateral heel release, full stop. Go put a boot in a binding and kick the shit out of the heel, it won't come out, unless you hit it so hard that the binding slides backward on the forward pressure spring, far enough for the boot to pop out.

Safest binding is a pretty open thing. The safest binding for skiing groomers is probably a Knee binding. It becomes less safe if you're skiing something like big mountain or large park where the lack of retention when shit gets hairy is more likely to hurt you than the chance of wrecking your knee if you fall funny.

At this point im just wondering about the weight of the sth 12 and the FKS 140. Any help is appreciated!

Don't get too hung up on weight. Because it's so close to the centre of mass a couple of hundred grams won't make a huge difference in terms of swing weight.

The STH12 uses the Z toe, which has approximately 1 mosquito's pubic hair of elastic travel. Either you are in, or you have ejected. They are not great park bindings, they spit you out as soon as you get slightly wonky and as a result you have to run a higher DIN to get good retention.
The STH12 Driver however, has a proper toe, and is a much better binding. It is also considerably more expensive and heavier.
