Replying to Check your Privilege

So there's apparently this movement that people are reminding those who seem to appear privileged to "check your privilege" and help others who aren't as privileged. I had not heard of this movement until recently when I read an article about a white Princeton student who rips into it.

I obviously understand the concept of privilege but hadn't heard of this check your privilege thing. Is this a common thing that people have encountered? Has anyone on NS had someone tell them to "Check your privilege"?
