I had this problem a lot as well. Make sure when you are approaching the jump you can feel the pressure on your shins, and then pop and make sure to not rush your rotation, as this will cause you to mess it up. Also, you can throw your leading arm out in the direction you want to go. Finally, make sure to look on axis and not below you too early, only when you are approaching the end of the rotation cause it will put you off.
There is no way we can tell you which way to spin, whichever feels comfortable is best.
In the offseason you can practice threes on the ground until you stomp em every time, without stumbling.
