what is the intended purpose?

I don't think there is one particular intended purpose of the 2.35:1 crop. I guess it's up to each of us, if we use the anamorphic crop, to figure out a purpose or have an idea about why we should use it.

Some people like the cinematic look. I enjoy it sometimes but most of the time people use it and their overall composition doesn't match for the crop. For actions sports we should be shooting 4:3 but every tv/monitor in the world is 16:9.

People often employ it for the "cinematic look." The reasoning being that by aligning the aesthetics of your video to that of a more "professional" one, your video will inherit some degree of its quality. Of course this is completely ludicrous.

The relationship between aspect ratio, subject matter, and composition is highly psychological. The aspect ratio should be deliberately chosen to cater to those aspects of the image, not buy into some club hoping people will find it attractive out of mere association. If you have a solid grasp of composition, then picking your aspect ratio should be a no brainer. Hint: for anything that involves vertical travel/shapes (i.e. skiing), 2.35:1 is a senseless and misguided way to crop your footage. If you're shooting a video about the vast emptiness of a desert horizon, 2.35:1 is great.

Don't see why you would use 2.35:1 when the aspect ratio of current anamorphic (wide-screen) theatrical viewings is 2.39:1 anyway really cool people use 4.00:1 Polyvision, Abel Gance used it in 1927 for his Napoleon.

Yup, pretty much. They needed it to stand out from TV - which was 1.33 at the time.
