How did you get your last boots?

Hey all. So with this new forum and especially the new survey function I wanted to get a bit of info from you guys about how you buy boots.

Ill keep it pretty simple but Im interested to see how many of you guys are having boots properly fitted.

Post up in the comments any experiences you have had, good or bad.

Im basically wanting to get a better idea of how NS buys there kit. Also mods move this to gear if you want but this is more a buying poll then a gear poll.

I didn't necessarily try mine on in a shop, basically I got a chance to get a hook up on some Nordica Aces, tried on a friends pair to get a decent assessment of them just to make sure they weren't going to be the worst boot ever, then got them shipped to me...a little different then the experiences of most people, but I figured I'd throw that in there because there might be some people out there that have an opportunity at boot sponsor or something and this is a way you can go about it.

Well really I would say you are closest to tried on in a shop then got them online. Did you have them fitted after you got them though, that is a factor I maybe should have added.

Do people buy boots online and then take them to have them fitted?

Been meaning to, they were really comfortable pretty much the entire year, and I was super busy so I never got them to a shop. I'll probably end up getting them fitted this fall before the season starts.

The boots I'm using now used to be my dads. They have a pretty cool design, however I get terrible shin bang while using them

Yeah man you reallty should. With a high level boot like you have having them properly fitted will be a huge inprovment. Prob wont need much, start with footbeds and see how the fit is once your feet are neutral.

I did, tried all the boots I could and in every shell, the same size fit me, then I bought them online for the price, skied a few weeks on them and next season had them fully fitted.

This is an interesting point too. Are people just going in and trying boots or are you having fitters select the boots to try. Obviously no boot fitter would let a customer try every boot on, so are you guys just going to shops and trying on what you want?

My assumption would be no access to a boot fitter. That's for me at least. I had to experiment with lightly used boots from S/T to try to geuss and check my width, volume, whatever else goes into a fitting boot. I got lucky and after 3 tries I got boots that fit splendid. As for that last question, not many shops in the Midwest stock a certified boot fitter because there really isn't a need. Most of the people they are selling boots to are just the little Jimmie that can do blue squares. So to have one on the clock would really be a waste of money.

boot fitter took some measurements, recommend some boots, brought me some to try, a dabello krypton ended up fitting perfect with no mods. i ended up buying some foot beds latter.

Got mine 3 years ago and didn't know anything about boot fitting and the guy at the shop didn't mention it

Well i knew what kinda fit i wanted, but the people here arent really into fitting, at least locally, but they know how to pick the right size, and every single boot I tried fit in a 31 and others were too small or too large, and I tried at least 20 models over time, so later i went and found the best price on the boots I wanted (I got booters) and this season when I went to livigno, those things were hurting (start of second season) so i went to the local shop that has a fitter ( they do everything from shell mods to liner adjustments blah blah blah and then I had myself fit into my boots properly for the first time. I didnt buy the boots there, but he served me well and for free anyway, as I'm a pretty good customer there, so hell recognize me when i go and stuff.
Considering how they fit, I probhably wouldn't have minded a little non-customer fee, as they were unskiable.

i got my boots second hand from the turkey sale in whistler, where people bring in the gear they don't want anymore and sell it. there are staff around that help you with fit but they are not good or anything and there are so many people so they don't have time to be with one customer for a long time. i did that for price reasons (drop kicks in great condition for $150).the next year i got a job at my local shop and through that i have been able to heat mold the liners and get advise about the little changes on them i can do my self. the boots fit right from the begging but i have a bit of problem with the arches of my feet hurting cause i don't have insoles.

got new ace of spades to replace my old ones
its my third pair of AOS boots
First pair: tried on in shop, loved them, skied them till they cracked in half then sent them in for warranty
second pair: urgent buy to replace the first pair, bought em online, later got custom insoles and thermo liners from sidas
Third pair: warranty boot, '14'15 AOS (swag) dumped my worn out boots and thermo liners (never liked em) and put the custom soles in the standard liner => best boot ever for me

This is quite interesting. So who is selling boots? Its not like a boot fitter costs a shop any more then a normal staff member. Good boot fitters train themselves and learn what they need so I dont really understand the cost issue. Having somone who can offer footbeds for boots and shoes ect will be a big benifit to most shops.

yes, unfortunately. i'm from central new york and skiing isn't the biggest industry out here. i have one ski shop in my area and they do a poor job of fitting people into boots.

I at least let my staff try to fit them, but admittidly I normally redo all the work anyway just so I know its right.

There are people who have done it, as there really aren't that many good bootfitters around unless you live in a ski town or highly populated area (but even then it can be hard to find them). I'd probably get rigid footbeds made at my local orthopedist and stretching/ grinding shells isn't too hard if you know what you are doing and are creative enough to do it without specific tools. I've never done my own shell work at home (haven't needed to), but I have done work on my liners with great success.

In my city I have 2 shops.
1) a skate/snowboard shop. Really cool guys. Sell a few ski things. Can do base work etc, but they know nothing about ski equipment.
2) local ski shop that knows what he is talking about. But works the entire shop basically himself. I have seen maybe 2 other people there in ~3 years. But he can do basics like measure your last, moldings, etc. This shop is rather expensive though.

I imagine for both these shops, it just doesn't seem worth it to go out of their way to go get a trained worker to stay on the clock all the time for boot fittings. They just don't sell enough boots. Boots usually have a pretty long life, and when combined with the low skier population in the Midwest, it is just not really practical. For most places at least.

Basically have been hooked up with head boots since my racing days as they never required shell work and just have boot doc foam injections and boot doc semi custom foot beds. (I have the Head Raptor Overkill)

And then in Feb got given a pair of K2 spyne 110s from the rep and was amazed how snug the fit was straight away... (although the intuition liner is already breaking down after 2 months).

So in answer to your question.. Yes I got fitted professionally but thats due to working in a shop. (I work in the service department so have no real in depth boot knowledge)

what amazes me is the head is 98mm last and the k2 is 100 last. yet they fit very similar on the foot.

told the rep what size I needed, shipped straight to home. went to local shop to get vacuum fitted, paid with large pizza. best fitting boots ever. fischer kicks ass!

I was on a budget, but I went to a local shop and got them fitted. So happens he recommended me the cheapest Noridcas.. That is what I could afford so I don't know how trained he actually was. I got some extra room in the toes and could only afford the cheaper footbed. I did what I could do. I got major toebang with them, however by the end of the year they fit fine. Nordica Ace of Spades btw.. MY FEET WERE ALWAYS FREEZING. Even with the ultra-thin wool socks.

I ordered mine through my shop and did all the fitting myself (Grinding and Molding the liners.) Had footbeds made for me though by a co-worker.

im on my second pair of full tilt influence boots (booters then high fives). got the booters fitted (shell work and what not but footbeds were added later. broke the shell so i ordered the high fives in the same size (couldnt find booters in the same size) and threw my old liners (had like 30 days on them) into the new shells. and i have the unmolded liners from the high fives so those are getting fitted and put in next year

My last pair I bought on NS gear trade and then took to a shop to have heatmolded with my footbeds and also bought a booster starp for em. They were a pair of full tilts and now after I heatmolded them at the shop they are the most comfortable boot I've ever owned.

I got mine from a bootfitter. I got them heat moulded right away. I got full custom footbeds a few weeks later (maybe less).

i dont understand how so many kids ski in such loosely fit mushy boots. if I'm skiing park, or anywhere else for that matter, i want absolutely no room for movement in my boots. I wear like size 9 or 10 shoes, but I'm in a 25.5 boot. So fitting is pretty well mandatory for me. I had to do ridiculous amounts of work to my old full tilts. My new dallbello krypton fusions, fit a bit better though. Only had to slightly grind out the shells by my outer metatarsus, along with moulded shells and orthotics. Ive skied full tilts and the old kryptons for years before these boots, so i like staying with the cabrio design. To be honest though i really don't have the right foot for them. However now that the new dalbellos are 1 mm wider and have a higher instep, they're working out great.

I read the title like that as well lol.

Got fully fitted with used boots which the boot fitter picked out for my feet and got sidas full customs. I have had a incredibly hard time getting the boot to fit and even after pretty much coming in every two weeks for tweaks they still don't fit right.

The next boot they recommended I get was a fischer vacuum custom fits. I will need medical help down the road with my feet and ankles that foot beds will simply not correct.

I got my boots online without trying them on from a specialty shop in vermont, because they were the only store that carried nordica dobermann wc EDT boots.

This was after trying tons of boots on and none of them holding my heel down at all. Got the dobermanns because they were the most narrow last width off the shelf boot I could find at a 95.

This was several years ago and now that I've learned how to special order plug boots I'm moving to a 92 last full plug for next year. Already special ordered. I definitely haven't tried it on first, but it's also not possibly to try it on first because it's a specialty order.

using superfeet is not the end of the world. Sure a custom footbed is nice, but not necessary. you can do work on the shell with anything really, as long as you can heat them up without melting them and have a dremel you are golden.

by all means if you have the money and access to a very good bootfitter, then go get totally custom 100% fitting boots. for the rest of us, it's possible to try on boots, determine if they fit ok, and if necessary, do a bit of modification. If you are totally comfortable in your boots, and happy with the performance you get, then why bother going through the extra trouble? we are not world cup ski racers here.

I'm working at a ski shop and during my training I realized that my old boots were one size too big, which is the case for 80% of the skiers, and got a pair of Atomic Overload, which is the right length and width for my foot, with a pair of high arch supports, and they're great! no toe bangs at all since they're the right size and no major shin bangs

After working at a ski shop and fitting boots for 5+ years I have noticed some things. One is that younger customers do go cheap on boots. It is normally the last thing they replace once they have to buy it with their own money. And once you talk about footbeds (which is just as important as the right fitting boot) they don't want to spend anymore money. It should be the other way around were you don't skimp on ski boots and footbeds. If you have shitty boots and $1000 skis you cant control those skis for your life but if you had the right fitting boots that fits the shape of your foot and the flex is fit for you. Then you can ride a $300 ski way better then the other way around because you have the best connection between you and the skis. It's like getting a mustang with a 4 banger. It has the looks but no performance. You buy a mustang with a V8! So next time you buy new boots. Test drive that mustang and get the V8.

first boots I ever bought on my own in 2008 were some dalbellos on ns. I tried them on at the outlet store and then miraculously saw them barely used on ns later that month. in truth, they were a size +.5 too big, but I made em last 5 years of hard skiing.
the last season using them I went into the fitter (cosmo in Truckee, CA is the SHIT) cause they were real packed out and he gave me some inserts to tide me over and I tried on some dalbello krypton pros for that year.
later that summer I saw those krypton pros on gear trade for $150 basically brand new a half size too big and swooped em up. they're so sick! I have a sock system to have my perfect fit cause they're a tiny bit too big; they're heat moldable, but I haven't done that cause sometimes heat molding just makes the liners compact more than is really necessary.

while getting a custom boot fit is great, the price vs. the result isn't worth it, imo. actually skiing it works it out on its own and if you're just trying to catch up in that process by heatmolding, etc you're not really getting that same result. adding $100+ onto the price of $500 boots isn't that worth it for people that actually ski the amount to make it worth it (very controversial statement!). Then they're just packed out liners that don't last as long. my .02 eh.

I did a 1000 mile round trip to see you to get boots. We chatted a bunch and looked and spoke about my feet and it was at least 10mins before my foot went anywhere near a shell. Started first with my super high arches finding out that my foot shrinks a size and 6mm of last with proper arch support. Found out my true size with support and then started shell testing the the length, the last, the heel shape, etc eventually found i had two real choices to fit my needs a salamon x max or a lange rx. Both were going to need shell work but were practically identical other than price, the lange were cheaper so picked them. Then moved on and sorted out rigid custom footbeds. Left the shop to go get lunch and let tom do the shell moulding and adding extra bolts in the cuff for the choice of a stiffer flex and get the footbeds ready. Came back and then did liner heat moulding with some pads on some known pressure points to stretch them out and got some extra foam on the back of the liner for my wimpy calves. All in all a good few hours later i walked out with an amazing fitting pair of boots at a NS discounted price. Have skied on them the whole season and only had some minor buckle adjustments to do and have generally been massively happy about them. Having such a snug fit and stiff flex gave me a control i really never had before and has definitely improved all aspects of my skiing. Thanks tom. The only problem I have now is after a super deep landing which evented in a double eject to collar bone break is that i've popped a rivet on one of my buckles which i put down to being fairly far over on the clip.

i think there is some great info in tho thread. Gives a good idea about the differences some of you guys seem to deal with. It seems you east coast and Midwest guys have the hardest time getting to see a boot fitter which actually surprises me somewhat. If there are any mainland Europeans reading what are your experiences with boot fitting?

You know boot fitting is free if your buying boots? i see this a lot people saying they can't afford it but that only makes sense if you are buying boots online an then taking them in for fitting. Buy from a shop and you will buy a boot an a footbed. He you may spend a little more on the boot but add in shipping an the cost of fitting you will usually find it's cheaper to buy in a shop. The other big factors are you will get a fit garentee and easier warranty process.

So unless I'm seeing it wrong I don't get the cost thing really. Sure if we were adding on a few 100 bucks to fit but we don't.

Before working in the shop I work at now I've been to Sole in chamonix who I would regard as some of the best boot fitters in the world.. Proven by the fact riders from around the world use them.

Locally to where I am. There are 3 shops. I find the biggest problem is that shops would rather sell a boot than say "sorry we dont have a boot for you".

for the most part I think most resorts in europe have that 1 guy who knows a shit ton about boots.

I avoid surefoot like the plague heard way to many and seen way to many horror stories.

Yeah it seems that most resorts have that one old guy who knows about boots. I know sole in cham a bit, I have seen some decent work out of there. Hopefully some younger guys will want to get into fitting more to keep the knowledge expanding.

Overall it seems the uk is pretty lucky. For a nation with no skiing we have alot of great shops. Take London for example there are over 10 shops all who do boot fitting. Sure some of the fitters are less then great but its still not bad.

And yeah I agree about surefoot, I probably have to fix more of there boots then any other shop.

Yeah it is for sure true that you can do liner and shell work at home if you have too. The big factor is the footbeds though. A ski footbed is very differnt to that you would put in a shoe, so its not just a case of going to any old podestrist. This is the biggest factor I beleive and really there is no way around it. But obviously footbeds could be added later if need be. So if you really live somewhere where you cant get to a fitter, wait untill you are in a resort and get the boots fitted then. It really does make the biggest differnce having the foot properly surported.

tomPietrowskiA ski footbed is very differnt to that you would put in a shoe, so its not just a case of going to any old podestrist. This is the biggest factor I beleive and really there is no way around it.


Its a little off the main topic but can you explain how and why they differ and a little as to why its more important in ski boots than in shoes as i've heard people saying "if i dont need them in my shoes then why should i need them in my ski boots?"

i had RX 120's for the past two seasons, I upgraded this year to a RX 130 and got them fit. Was gonna get some footbeds and liners but didn't have enough cash, they fit like sleepers already though.

tomPietrowskiYou know boot fitting is free if your buying boots? i see this a lot people saying they can't afford it but that only makes sense if you are buying boots online an then taking them in for fitting. Buy from a shop and you will buy a boot an a footbed. He you may spend a little more on the boot but add in shipping an the cost of fitting you will usually find it's cheaper to buy in a shop. The other big factors are you will get a fit garentee and easier warranty process.

So unless I'm seeing it wrong I don't get the cost thing really. Sure if we were adding on a few 100 bucks to fit but we don't.


yeah. but buying a custom footbed is not cheap. i've never skied with one, even back when I got free gear. I didn't really need them.
