Yes that is right... the greatest responsibility ever has now been bestowed upon you as a Newschoolers member.... you must answer our reader survey.

Really though, we know this shit is boring as fuck - so that is why we've managed to spice up the situation with a full spread from Smith, Virtika and Line Skis. You answer, you can win sweet gear plain and simple.

Anyone can complete the survey, but yes, unfortunately only US residents are eligible to win the prize.

We know it sucks, and we've looked at ways at extending it to other countries, but the issue always comes down to cost. Yesterday we had a big sit down about contests (including this issue) and we're hoping to find a a better solution moving forward.

It'll be interesting to see what you guys do with the data. Do you have a problem you are trying to solve, or are you just looking for a ton of data about the NS population? It seemed very shotgun approach ish, so I'm curious. I'm taking a market research class right now so this stuff is interesting.

Well fuck, I'm Canadian and I did it thinking I could win prizes. Although it was in the fine print, seeing that a decently large part of the traffic to this site is Canadian, you would think that it would be more apparent who could win prizes. Seems like a ploy to get more people to do it based on prizes they can't receive. Hate on me all you want for not reading the agreement, but you have to admit that information like that shouldn't be on a secondary site.

I don't get it. How is it possible that shipping prizes internationally to US is that much cheaper that shipping them within Canada won't work?

Also why not just have the winner pay the shipping if it's to Canada or Europe?



Also the parts of the survey about buying equipment lacked the whole buying used aspect of it. To be honest I haven't once bought a piece of ski equipment that wasn't used so I didn't really fit in a any of the the categories for some questions.

If someone from out of country wins, give them the option to pay for shipping costs. Personally I would have no problem paying a few hundred for like 2k worth of gear. If they dont want to pay for shipping then just redraw and give them something smaller or a gift card or someshit

It's not the shipping aspect that is the issue, its the legal aspect of all the backed paper work and such. Every country (and even province in the case of Canada) have varying rules about prizing in contests

As Chris said, the fact that it's US only has nothing at all to do with shipping costs -- it's all about the legal side of things.

I'll use Canada for an example. For us to allow Canadian residents to be eligible in a contest, it costs Newschoolers a flat fee of $2000 (per contest) in legal fees to open it up to Canada... and that doesn't even include Quebec!

A lot of countries also have very strange regulations that either make it very hard for us even make it possible, or simply have too many other costs on top of the initial flat fee. I'll use Canada for example -- it costs us 2k to run in... but if a Canadian winner takes home a prize, we also need to pay an additional 30% of the prize costs to the IRS. That can add up really quickly depending on the prize and amount of winners.

Hope that clears things up a bit! Like I said we're really looking at finding a better solution... but at the moment, we believe the money is better spent elsewhere. Thanks for understanding.
