Filming yourself

So, last week all my friends were out of town, and I ended up making a self edit by setting up a tripod by a rail. I would have liked to have the camera farther away to get more of the landing, but I read about a 12 minute recording limit on Canon dslr's, so i kept the camera close, and started/stopped recording every time I hiked. I also planned to have the camera at the same spot for all the shots, but I kept moving the camera every hike trying to figure out the best angle.

Anyways, I'm sure I'm not the only person to do this, so what tips could you guys give to make this easier? Are there any remotes to start and stop recording from far away? (shooting with a t2i) This would help a bunch in post, so I wouldn't have search around in 3 minutes of video just to find one trick, and would also save a ton of space on the SD card.

Having to sift through the footage at the end is definitely a pain. I have a t4i, so not 100% sure what the differences are between it and the t2i, but when I go over 12 mins it keeps recording and just splits it.

What I've done in the past is not stop recording until I've landed something. Then I know it's closer to the end. Also if you set it up in such a way as to see a lot of the landing you can see yourself hiking back to the camera, and that makes it easier to find your clip. Just have to make sure to check and make sure the camera is still recording every once in a while.

Not the greatest solution but it works


On another note, if you film by yourself a lot there is a tripod thing that tracks your movement called soloshot. You just put your camera on the top and wear a tracker. I don't really know a lot about it, and I've never used it, but it might be worth looking into

Oh, I forgot to mention. On the t4i you can cut your clips on the camera (creating another clip on the sd card with your "cut" clip) then you can just delete the super long clips and keep the cut ones. Don't know if the t2i does this, but it might be worth looking into.
