Removing bindings

About to take off my bindings before I sell some skis and I was wondering if there's anything I should know (I.e. precautions) other than just taking a screwdriver to it.

Don't strip the female screw(this is probably incorrect terminology but you'll get it I hope). It'll likely be very stiff to unscrew so make sure you apply a lot of force. Use the right sized screwdriver. Other than that it's not a big deal. Fill in(/tap) the holes after I guess.

Just be super careful not to round out the screw heads. If the screws are tight and you have trouble getting them to turn, put the skis on the ground so you can get more leverage on the driver. This also allows you to put more pressure down on it to hold it in the screw head.

the most important thing is to use the right wrench, pozi or phillips #3. don't just use whatever or it will strip and you'll be boned.

haha "female screw". It's just called a hole, there's no fancy term for it. sorry, that just made me chuckle.


but yeah don't strip it and make sure the screw is all the way out of the hole before you even pull on it.

Haha yeah I assumed that was what he meant by female screw. It all went well, except one of the heads was already rounded by (presumably) the shop tech, so I put a rubber band and pushed down and it worked!

It is definitely worth getting a pozidriver. I stripped some screws using a philips and when I finally got a pozi they came out easily.

Haha I actually meant the top of the screw(where the bit of the screwdriver connects)

Also stripping the screw hole isn't going to matter, it should be getting filled in anyway and not reused.

ah gotcha, that would just be called the screw head.

but why should it be getting filled? you can use holes more than just once you know... haha unless it's obviously been ripped out or something.

I just personally wouldn't trust it, from experience it hasn't worked out(I'm talking about more than just rip-outs after rescrewing bindings), I can't be bothered explaining why but it doesn't seem to work for me(especially when I'm likely wrong) - it involves overtorquing etc.

If you start the thread on the screw in exactly the right place on the female thread in the ski then there's no problem with it - it's just like reinstalling a machine thread into a metal hole.

The risk is that if you start the thread in a different place, which is relatively easy to do since ski cores aren't exactly hard material and the screws are quite aggressively threaded, the screw will essentially cut the thread in half as it goes into the ski. So instead of being held by a continuous spiral of core material, it's held by about 30 tiny little strips which easily tear off. This is why I don't like re-using holes. If you're going to, get some Binding Freedom/Quiver Killer inserts, or at least put a metal helicoil in.

Just make sure your using a posidrive bit and you'll be good. If not then you might risk stripping the screw and have to drill it out. A good ol' flathead screwdriver will work too if its the correct size and you got some muscle

I little trick I came up with is to take a soldering iron if you have one and just hold it on the head of the screw for a minute or two before you try to loosen it. If there is any epoxy or wood glue, the heat will soften if just enough to make unscrewing a breeze.

^thats a good tip. i do that all the time when i am working on my bike and need to un thread a bolt that is loctited in.
