I was with my snowboarder friends today and they were bitching about Shaun white and how he represents the worst things in snowboarding and they asked me if there was a skier like him and I couldn't think of one off the top of my head. I've never really paid as much attention to it as other people but now I'm curious. Who do you think is a Shaun White kind of guy in the skiing world?

short answer: he distances himself from the snowboard community. Looks at the sport only from the competition side and doesn't participate in the fun aspect. In his defence - he's a ginger, so he has no soul.

He's arrogant. He goes out to comps to win and that's pretty much all he wants is to be a rockstar and to be the best. There's nothing really wrong with wanting to be good but that's all he cares about. He doesn't represent the snowboarding community in any way, shape, or form. To me, all those punks who are like "oh sponsor me I'm so good I'm going places and I'm way way way better than anyone here on the mountain even though Im a huge jack ass." remind me of him. Plus, his sponsors built him his own Halfpipe and he wouldn't let anyone else ride it because he thinks he's the shit. I could go on and on about why I don't like him but it's not really worth the time.
That rollerblade that used to bitch and whine about everything. At the gravity games he made a whole seen because he fell and supposedly it was because somebody had moved a ramp and so he needed to restart his run. Anyway pretty sure said person ended up on ski blades in the x games and did the same kind of thing. Was punching the snow when he blew.
I might not be 100% correct on all that but if that guy had ever gotten famous he would have been on track to beat shawn at his own game.
baaangthattheres the whole deal where he more or less slighted fellow snowboarders out of a collective 50 Gs in japan....plus the whole louie vito thing...

dumont used to be the closest thing to this, but even he put out edits and stuff like that every now and then. same thing with goepper. he cares about comps only really, but he also just seems like he loves skiing to have fun too. i don't know, i don't think we have anyone that really compares

He was 15 so he couldn't take the car, so they gave him an EXTRA 15 Gs, so he got $65,000 total

Honestly caring about comps and winning isn't even it. He's the perfect example of that person that let fame completely go to their head and becomes a conceited douche.

He had plenty of people riding his dick then. Peoples runs being cut into so they could air shawn white on a practice run or some lame interview. The way he became the ultimate snowboard hero to the ignorant. OMG LIEK THE FLYING POTATO IS SO GOOD!
I mean it was great for him. He was a total douche and a bunch of people loved him, he made his money. But he never did anything to be respected.
Honestly I think it's good to show up to contests to win. I mean if you're competing at that level just to have fun, whatever that's great, but for the most part people should be trying to do well. If it means a lot to you and you're super focused, that's also great. There's nothing wrong with going to major competitions with a mindset to compete. People don't train for years to go to the olympics and just kind of have fun. Some people train their whole lives for those moments. Sure snowboarding isn't really as hardcore strict as gymnastics or figure skating but these big comps are still big comps.
All I'm trying to say is that there's nothing wrong with winning , or being focused on winning. What made people dislike him was him being a self centered douche which was unnecessary. I love the guys who can kill it and stay humble. Even if they don't walk away with a gold those guys are the champs.
Would just like to point this out...So he has his own training pipe right? It's probably pretty well maintained. Let's be honest, things are a lot easier in better conditions. Then he goes to Sochi where the pipe was a disaster and he takes 4th which he blamed on the conditions. haha I just find that really ironic and hilarious.

yeah, but cut him a little slack because most riders complained about the pipe, and yeah it was a miserable pipe
very very happy to say that i don't believe we have a big enough dick in the sport of free-skiing to compete with the likes of shaun white. and that makes me so incredibly happy to say. sure we have our pros who are more serious ,and more competition focused, but in no way , shape, or form are they anywhere near the level of douchbag that shaun white is.... plus those said pros i was referring to who are more focused on winning comps still look like they are having a blast, and it seems like ALMOST all skiers can bolster a smile at the end of their run ( least most of them imo), landed or not. just my observation.

THIS! perfect example would be Nick Goepper. He is focussed on winning and does a run to which the judges will love, but still keeps his roots with him. Goes back to perfect north to ski at their park instead of building a private park in an avalanche area. Or Simon Dumont, he cried (I think) when he lost pipe finals but still puts out edits and gave back to the community with the dumont cup. Even when he did build a private pipe, it wasn't to further his competition carear, it was to do something abnormal. Hopefully we will never have a shaun white version of skiing.

Goepper has some stuff on youtube, you know that right? Besides, Goepper is a really nice guy that just likes to have fun skiing. Watch his backyard rail setup thing on youtube or look at the thread 'i think i came around on goepper'

Yeah I was pretty surprised when goepper was mentioned. I always thought he was a good guy all around. I've seen a lot of his videos and he definitely doesn't act like a jack ass. He messes around sometimes like in that video with his sister at her gymnastics practice but he seems like a pretty genuine guy.
in the Vice freeskiing video (which was fucking horrible) someone said Tom Wallisch was the Shaun White of skiing, and i'm inclined to agree. not happy about it, but there you are

That was Tanner Halls analogy of where Tom Wallisch is in terms of money and training, to where like shaun white he doesn't need the help of the USSA.
iv had buddies that have skied with tom wallisch who say he is a huge jack ass, this is just second hand knowledge, but the guys who have told me this are decent guys. granted i still wouldn't put him anywhere close to shaun.

I've posted a few posts before with props for Shaun White, like how Jake Burton thinks he's the best thing to happen to snowboarding.. and people love to hate.. so no one liked hearing that.
Anyhow, what is it about my post that doesn't make sense? Have you seen Shaun's YT channel? It reminds me of Lenny Kravitz.
Anyhow, White should end up with no sponsors and on drugs if everyone here is right and that he is a huge jackass.
