More seriously, look for the shoes that cross between the light hiker and trail runner categories. What brand really depends on what fits you well. Columbia, Salomon, Merrell, Keen, etc all have choices to look at and can often be found on sale. I personally like these, although I would only use them for trail running and day hikes with a well maintained trail. theBearJewI thought about getting the Banks for some light trails/outdoor shenanigans. Anyone have a pair and can speak on them? Do they have a supportive sole?
I can't speak for the Banks, but I have the Thurston, which are more of a mid/high top. They are great for hiking in, and honestly I could do a lot more with them if I really wanted, but the Banks would be a better all around because I feel like the higher top sort of restricts a lot of movement. They're not like a basketball shoe where the high top supports but still allows free range of motion, they're more like the high top supports and only supports. I love them though, the waterproof-ness is the best part.

sorry for the double post, but about the sole. They don't have the greatest arch support or anything, not something you'd want to run in. But they are good for what they are. I have flat feet, and they're a little narrow so I don't put any insoles in them, and I've never had a problem.
