HDPE Wont Slide Well

m.rogersI recently made a 16' long box with HDPE as the top sheet, but yet it won't slide very well and I slow down on it. This, however, does not happen when I use my pvc rail which is the same length. So that means I don't need more speed, I need the box to slide better. I have not waxed it, but I was wondering if I should wax it, and with what?

Throw some water on it. Is it smooth or is it cutting board?


As far as speed when you're sliding a pvc rail that's single tube or shotgun your skis have less contact as there is only a small spot on each pipe vs. a wide box where your skis are touching every piece of the width.


How wide is the box?


Boxes can be slow in warm weather, if it's dry it's just not going to slide that fast. Best bet is to throw a little water on it every once in a while, maybe make your drop in taller if needed.

Also do you have coping? If not could be snagging a bit on the edges. Can take a razor and 45 them or get some tubing or angle iron for the sides. Since you already have your topsheet secured you can toss 2x4s on each side to support the coping. That will keep you from having to unscrew the topsheet, add plywood to get the height right.

Obviously the thickness of what you're using would determine how high to sink in the 2x4. Throw the coping on there and figure out exactly where you want it then secure it. Then your can drill in from the side of the coping and secure it against the side of the box(tubing) of side of the 2x4(angle iron)

And with the tubing you could sink a scre2 in each end without having to drill the top for more stability. IF you have a spot you can access inside you could run bots on your horizontal instead of screw to really crank it down tight and make it feel sturdy like a welded frame.

Yeah I put the coping on and it worked well. After using it a bit, I felt my self stopping once I set my edge for swaps so the coping was the best solution thank you for that.
