i would pay to have no ads. I would not pay for premium stuff. I would also not use adblock if it weren't for the in-video ads on websites like NS and youtube.

This is the only site I'd consider paying for, but you'd have to make it very worth my while. Just getting rid of ads wouldn't be enough.

annoying ads definitely have made me turn adblock back on in the past. that Mammoth dropdown ad for instance.

that and some weird pop ups that only happened on NS with adblock disabled and the request that NS keep redirecting the page after it's already loaded that doesn't happen with adblock.

right now only the request for certain pages to be redirected is happening and I can live with that so adblock has been off. but I'm sure keeping the ads less intrusive on the site would keep adblock usage down.

I use safari now. It's so much better than it was in the past. To the point where I didn't bother installing firefox. But anyways it has "safari power saver" and it blocks most animated ads from running, which is great. Also I have been getting less annoying ads recently.

I would not pay. I feel like the content has been on a steady decline for a few years.

In all honestly, I would probably retire if we came to the point where I had to pay. Until then, I will continue to use ABP.

BWalmerI guess it really comes down to what you'd get. Like, no ads is one thing, but premium content can be worth a lot. You'd basically have to have a free version of the site (basically what it is now), and then with a subscription you'd get no ads, and some bonus content (the better the bonus content the more I'd pay). I'd have no problem paying like $10-$15 a month if the bonus content is good enough (not JUST a separate forum or something...although that'd be fun), but otherwise I'd just deal with ads.

Basically, I wouldn't pay to just be ad free, it would come down to what the bonus content is. Which is kinda the hard part...like no one is going to want to release an edit or something just to subscribers, and it's not worth paying to just see an edit a day early. Some bonus content ideas could be exclusive access to edits/movies (maybe smaller film companies would release the digital copy to subs), exclusive "lower rules" forum (less moderating, makes sense since the people paying for the site will care more about the content), priority picks for mod/purple people additions, change name color (although the color options are kinda running out), higher quality videos/photos (this may mean non subs would only get 720p video and lower res pictures -- not so bad that it's not watchable/degrades the photo, but still lower than subs), discounts in store (maybe even discounts with other partnered stores live evo). Just a few ideas, there's probably a bunch more that could be added, substituted in, whatever.

These are all great ideas, and I second this. Maybe add a bit of site customization to subs, like being able to change the layout around a bit or something?
Also, make an NS app for subs, where you can stay logged in like instagram and it is easier to upload stuff off of your phone. IDK about 15$ a month cause that shit adds up pretty quick, but I probably would pay something like $80-100 per year to get this shit, if you made it worth my time with extra stuff.

We'd never not have a free newschoolers. Trust me, I will stand by that until the day I die. I've just had enough people suggest other ideas that I'm willing to talk about it. Very likely we won't do this, but I'm curious to ponder the issue.

I'm currently 24. In June, when I turn 25, it will be my 9 year anniversary on NS. I used to lurk SG, post regularly in NSG, and was active in BST/Gear talk/M&A. I now usually only browse M&A but don't post.

As far as other content, I'll browse the homepage and click if something catches my eye(4/5 times it does) and then usually video hop from there. That content is satisfying to me, at least.

All in all, the user interaction has gone down the shitter if you ask me. Maybe I'm not used to dealing with immature 16-20 year old kids.

Well to be fair you have to remember that when you started you were 16. So the tastes that you had have changed dramatically over 9 years. I mean take the delta in change in your life from 16 to 7. When you were 7 you were into WAY different shit than you were when you were 16 I'd bet.

So you'll first off have a different taste and perception.

Now note - the fact that you get satisfying content out of 4/5 clicks onto content on the homepage is a massive win. Newschoolers has evolved a ton in the last 9 years. Just as many people view videos now as do yammer on endlessly in the forums. So when you say you 'hate the content' - you might just be over the forums, and now more into the content part of this community. Just be careful when thinking you 'hate newschoolers' when you only hate a few D-bags in the forums.

Sure the user interaction has gotten a lot bigger, and its harder to find people in the forums that are close to you, you can ski with, etc. However - something that drives me crazy is that almost everyone that has 'grown tired of the forums' doesn't do much to try to stimulate good conversation. The thing with forums are that they are what you make of it. So if you just give up, then sure... you leave and they go on in whatever fashion. However, if you create threads, respond helpfully and up/down vote about what you are.... you can help be the change. Its all cyclical, and all inclusive.

Newschoolers is whatever you put into it.... and just like the idiots can make it bad, the good people can make it awesome.

So I urge you... as someone who is enjoying the media side of things... throw up a good thread once in a while and try to rally some of the good brains to have a great debate.

This is feedback that i know myself and others have thrown out before, but I think is relevant: I only have a problem with the ads in the videos. For whatever reason, the ads take 5+ minutes to load even when they say things like "video will begin in 15 seconds". I realize this is a personal problem but I only have it with video ads on this site, everywhere else loads fine. The videos on ns run perfectly fine once I can get past the stupid ad. The video ads single-handedly ruined the video section for me, I used to be a 99% video section- 1% forums guy and now I'm the other way around. I like the banner ads, they're relevant and I find cool stuff I like a lot. I guess while I'm posting I'll add that I would never pay to use this site (or any other) and I might be coming off as whiny but I'm the consumer and this is my honest feedback.

Sparknotes: Like banner ads, abhor video ads.

why don't you just make this site adblock proof, like Hulu did?
