omnidataA lot less dramatic then I was expecting.
CaptainDickbuttCop was an asshole, but he kind of proved a point.
CaptainDickbuttCop was an asshole, but he kind of proved a point.
Ski_the_east01There are a lot of good cops out there but these fuck stick minority cops that are nothing but assholes with a badge give them all such a bad name
bfulmerYou serious?
CaptainDickbuttLongboards have no brakes.
bfulmerI'm no expert
bfulmerReally? Thanks Cap'n.
You're illustrating my point.
Huck_NorrisMore proof longboarders are generally fucking idiots. Charging down hills not giving a single fuck. Also they fail to recognize that what they're doing is illegal and dangerous to others, which does actually give the officer more range to act and make the stop to protect the general public. The fact that the riders had the balls to stand there and argue with him was kind of hilarious.
"You could have killed us"
Well actually yes, and you could have killed yourselves or any number of others at any time by doing this illegal activity. Try watching cops stop people on motorcycles from running- They'll absolutely hit you off your bike with a car given the opportunity and they have no duty to protect you once you;ve shown you are willing to put others in danger.
So yeah, don't be such a fucking idiot. It's illegal to bomb down streets on longboards. Period. If a cop sees you, you will be fucked and no, you will have no room to complain if you crash from them trying to stop you. If you weren't doing it, you can't get hurt from the cops stopping you so just try not to be a cunt and you won't have to worry about it.
bfulmerIf there were a car (with fucking brakes) doing something illegal on the correct side of the road, do you think that the cop would swerve in front of them
Huck_NorrisWell that's obvious.
To clarify for you, yes officers do have a duty of care to preserve life- but if you're doing something that puts other people at risk that goes right out the window and the need to stop you becomes paramount.
I realize longboarding may not sound as dangerous as some other stuff, but it is fucking dangerous. Case in point- you can't stop if someone turns in front of you.
joshuaIdk, I find it hard to believe that enforcing a $35 dollar bylaw violation (as said in the description anyway, so that could be wrong), is worth possibly seriously injuring or killing someone. Like I said, that officer seemed very young and pretty hot headed about the whole thing, and probably didn't even understand how difficult it is to stop on a longboard when someone pulls in front of you like that. He made a rash decision here that could have been a lot worse. Yes, the long boarders were in the wrong, but the officer clearly had better, safer options IMO.
bfulmerReally? Thanks Cap'n.
You're illustrating my point. Think about it. If there were a car (with fucking brakes) doing something illegal on the correct side of the road, do you think that the cop would swerve in front of them, or turn around and pursue?
The only reason he was willing to swerve in front of them is that he knew that they would be the only ones in danger.
RubberSoulit's pretty easy to see in the cop's actions during and after the incident that he was governing by emotion and that aint what a cop is supposed to do
Huck_NorrisOk so just to be objective, is whipping down the hill at 35+ illegally on a plank with no brakes and limited steering worth possibly dying or killing someone over? See, they've already made the decision to subject themselves to that level of danger. That could have been anyone pulling out in front of them for any reason, it just so happens it was a cop this time.
I agree there were obviously better ways to handle it, but often people simply like to just not give a fuck until they're in trouble for making shitty decisions- then instead of accepting fault in their own actions, simply pointing the finger at the bigger asshole when the choice was yours to make to begin with seems to be the go-to these days.
I guess I just don't get longboarding. It's like the soy-as-fuck metrosexual cousin of skateboarding and I'm sick of seeing squids bombing down shit as if nothing could happen, they crying foul on cops who are just doing their job and trying to stop them when not one person but them thinks they should be able to do it.

Ski_the_east01It's how the cop chose to react to the longboarders that was very wrong. That whole two wrongs don't make a right saying...cop should have just been a level headed authoritative figured (what they're fucking paid to do...) and nailed the longboarders with a hefty fine or thrown them in jail for a night to stop them from doing that shit. Not nearly fucking killing them

joshuaIf someone pulled in front of them, then it would've been an accident. The officer deliberately blocked their lane knowing full well what he was doing.
Huck_Norris*sigh* Dude. We know. We all saw the video.
joshuaOkay, so you are saying that pulling in front of them and elevating the situation to "potentially life threatening" was THE BEST THING TO DO in order to prevent people from getting hurt. Like someone else said, he could have just as easily stopped in his lane and flicked the lights. I realize the longboarders were seriously in the wrong. But I'm not sure that justifies the officers seemingly rash, clearly emotional response (judging by his composure after the fact).
mmccarthy14It's as if skate/longboarding is a fucking crime now a days.

Huck_NorrisCharging down hills not giving a single fuck.
Huck_NorrisNEWSFLASH: It is a crime you fucking idiot! It also puts other people n danger- people who didn't decide to go bomb a hill without the ability to turn or stop either. So to answer your question, YES- I would much rather they tag up a bridge or smoke weed- I've never almost had to crash my car avoiding somebody taking bong hit in their living room fwiw.

CaptainDickbuttAlso, depending on the action, yes. I do. I've seen it.

It is a bylaw in West Vancouver (where the vid is shot), but saying longboarders can't turn or stop is fallacy. You can see the guy in the yellow helmet pulling a solid shutdown slide right in front of the cop.
We're not arguing over whether longboarding is or isn't illegal, it's how this cop decided to pull them over that is the problem. A cop doesn't pull a P.I.T. manoeuvre and toss your car in the ditch when you're speeding, he calmy pulls you over. Also, a real cop should't resort to finger pointing and yelling to make his point. Also this road is NOT a major road, it's residential. I have been there before, and you can tell because the cop doesn't even bother to pull over to write the ticket.
bfulmerYou really think that he was in the right here? How much of a threat could those kids have been posing? Worst case scenario is that they make another car swerve into another lane and hit someth- .... oh wait.
That's what the cop almost did, on purpose.
