I keep my highest tile in the left hand corner and I NEVER swipe up until I absolutely have to. The only reason the 4096 tile is on the right hand side is because I was forced to swipe up and then I had to switch up my game plan…but I always get the largest tile into a corner as fast as possible. My high score was just after in this game at 48,XXX.
i generally swipe up and left to get the big numbers in the top left corner, and small numbers spawning bottom right. if i cant go up or left, i go right. NEVER DOWN. unless there is absolutely no other option. but then you gotta stick with down/left (depending on the blocks of course) to keep the small blocks together, or else they crowd you out

Definitely the trick to get high scores, keep the big ones in the corner no matter what, and never swipe the opposite way unless you have to
