I feel like I've gathered the important aspects of kiwi life from watching FotC. Anything I'm missing?
Hopefully moving there for the winter/summer if I can snag a visa.
Who all skis down there and where all ya'lls shreddin?

FunkadelicI lived there for a summer -- I was near Auckland though so no skiing while I was there. But the people were freaking fantastic. So nice. Plus it was one country I've been where the people actually thought it was cool that I was American. It was definitely a really cool place to be. You're always close to the ocean. Plus there aren't any snakes in the entire country!
-Parks-snowpark NZ
SitI've lived here my whole life and I like to think we are pretty nice and chilled out.
The North Island, has one big ass volcano with a feild on each side and the most skiable area for one field, but the snow there is pretty sketchy and is usually icy.
Definitley head down to the South Island to ski. Wanaka is probably our 'ski town', it has Treble Cone and Cardrona right next to it (Cardrona has a pretty awesome park, and TC has some amazing terrain if the snow lets you ski it). Queenstown is another more touristy option, nestled in the middle of the southern alps too but it's probably more expensive than Wanaka.
If you're after a city then Christchurch is probably your best bet for skiing, it's halfway down the South Island and it's close to Mt Hutt which is pretty good. It's also not far from all our awesome little club feilds, which are probably where some of your best skiing will be - haven't been there in ages but I think they completely lack parks and you will want to hike to get the good stuff.
Skiing aside I guess NZ is pretty beautiful, probably spend winter in SI then head up north for summer! Hope you get here, we would be happy to have you!
--ski--Have not seen the sun for weeks. Moa and Haast's Eagle running rampant. All hope is lost.
SitIt's amazing in spring, it just gets thaw/frozen quite a lot. I'll get right onto the minister.
theabortionatorWord. I ended up applying to Turoa then got kind of depressed and abandoned applying to other places and just the whole NZ idea for this year in general.

pow_pow~there are more sheep than people on new zealand
SitBest of luck man, Turoa has really stepped up their park game recently too (I think they bring over some big dog from Squaw to shape now?). I'll be there for the start of the season so hopefully you can set up some good shit if you get through our iron-walled immigration service
Lachieif you're in the Auckland Like some guy said before, you can still actually go skiing. there's an indoor park called Snowplanet, it's pretty fun if your there for a few days
-Parks-i didn't live there, but i took a two and a half vacation there over Christmas last year. i was in queenstown which is on the southern island, on the shores of lake wakatipu. super beautiful place. by queenstown are the remarkables, which is a massive ski area that is really cool. you can do your own research on the skiing at each mountain. also close to queenstown is snowpark NZ among other smaller skiing locations.
one thing i want to mention is prepare to pay a lot. the cost of living there is very expensive, at least with the experience i had.housing, gas, and groceries are all pretty pricey. but it is an insanely cool place and i would love to go back.
there are tons of outdoor activities around queenstown, both for summer and winter. so its really nice to have options. interesting town and super close skiing, i think they even have a shuttle that goes up from the town. snowpark NZ is a bit further away than the remarkables, but im pretty sure that has the best park in the area.
hope i helped answer your questions. good luck making it down to NZ.
ps- fun fact: NZ is the mopst difficult country to get citizenship in

theabortionatorR.I.P. The + to combat high prices is high wages.
LOL I'm probably going to be living and riding the "sketchy" "icy" volcano you speak off. Hopefully it's not too bad. I'd like to get some different places if I can find away to travel around myself or meet anyone with a car.
Put in a good word for me with your government.
Bread.^ good answer here. As for getting an visa, i think hearing about you getting in some trouble with the law in USA (maybe it was theclap or someone else) if that is so im sorry to say but your probably fucked with getting a visa, NZ is so hard to get into let alone with a criminal record. As for the skiing the volcano you speak of is sick, its my home mountain and i love it. Both sides have their advantages and disadvantages. If you working par crew you will probably be Turoa side. Turoa is good, has a very good 6 seater, but if that lift is closed then the whole field is shit. Whakapapa (other side of the mountain) has more, gnarly terrain but is filled with t bars, your choice.
My advice for NZ, dont live in auckland, pick up surfing, do the tourist stuff ( our adventure tourism is so awesome) and chill out, we are known to be chill, so just be the same and have a good time.
If you are in the north island give me a yell and ill shout you a beer
Luke.88hit me up if you do get a job at turoa. I have my interview for the park crew in a view a weeks. Im a local so i will be down to sherd
LachieDefinitely hit me up if you do end up coming to snow planet, I'm keen to meet some other Newschoolers.
theabortionatorWhen does the season usually end for you guys. October ish?
Bread. When the six seater closes at Turoa the whole mountain turns to shit. Closes for high winds most of the time. Normally it takes them ages at the start of the season to get it set up too. When it is closed you have to ski the Giant chair, which is a very slow 3 person chair.
theabortionatorRandom questions
Is it weird riding without trees?
theabortionatorWord. Hopefully the weather holds up this season. Are you going to be there this winter?

Does anyone who live in NZ know the cell phone situation? Do they have non contract phones like straight talk or trac phone I could grab to keep in touch with people down there?
HanYolowhat makes you think NZ will give you a visa? (serious question)
dgravesmy friend's dad is from NZ
that is all
yuckI went to NZ when i was younger but still remember it being fucking soooooo rad. dunno much about actually living for an extended period of time there but i cant see how it would be not enjoyable. south island for skiing / mountain shit, north island for tropical paradise. good combo
theabortionatorAnyone know how strict they are about the minimum available funds? If you have a job set up and staff housing can you get into the country with like 2k?
Do you have to prove your funds before you go or do they stop you at immigration and say show me the money?
Anybody from other places gone there to work, or just happen to know things?

Matt_DSo when I went in I just showed them a copy of my bank statement at the border. Not sure how strict they are, but they didn't check very well, the person actually stamped my passport wrong. I would think it would be easy to make a fake statement and get passed the boarder patrol guy, but it is pretty high consequence if you did get caught some how.
terraclotI emailed someone at Cardrona a while ago about these types of things and seeing how feasible it is to land a job as well as live in the area... here's the site I was referred to: http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/workingholiday/unitedstatesofamericaworkingholidayscheme.htm
You've probably found this yourself. But, regarding funds, currently you'd have to have about $3,700 stashed away to be accepted, but I don't know how definite that is.

theabortionatorWas that in an NZ account or an account where you were coming from?
