Skiers in Milwaukee

I literally came in here to make this exact thread.

There's a chance that I'll be living in the Milwaukee area by the fall. I've never been there. Right now I'm looking at Cascade's site. Is that the most legit place to go?

Any help would be great.

Cascade is not worth going to. Tyrol is OK but has been getting worse every year. Granite Peak is definitely the most legit place in Wisconsin, though it's a long drive from Milwaukee. Sunburst and The Rock are your best bet for riding in that area.

i live in port washington, 20 minutes north of milwaukee. sunburst is much closer than cascade

No one's mentioned size yet.... Sure The Rock and Sunburst are closest, but other places are worth the drive.

Alpine Valley and Little Switzerland are the same caliber, same distance, probably biggest in the area. Wilmot kindof too.

Then there's Sunburst which always has tooooons of rails, but is small

HA nope. switz is backed into a tiny portion of the hill, alpine is so spread out, idk what you saw

Truly the best hill around is Chestnut. They build their jumps better than anyone in the Midwest. Its in Galena Illinois and is about 2 1/2 hrs from the Milwaukee area. Which is what it takes to get to Granite Peak.
Sunburst used to be good. A ton of rails (if you like rails) and they only set up two jumps this year. They must be having some issues with the management. There is a new owner of the hill and he is big into the racing scene.
On another note: The word is that all the patrollers quit and took all their gear. If this is true? I can't see them having a park next year since the liability would be to great. I would make sure before you buy a pass at the hill. It would be a waste of a few hundred bucks.

You must have never been to Granite Peak. Chestnut is fun but their jumps are no were near on par with Granite. Plus, Chestnut's lifts are painstakingly slow, whereas Granite has a 6 man high speed accessing their main park.

As for OP, depending on logistics for the Milwaukee area it's a toss-up between The Rock and Sunburst. Sunburst might have more but The Rock changes their setup more frequently and has a more consistent jump hit than Sunburst. I'd say whichever is going to be closer to where you live is going to be the deciding factor between the two, in my opinion.

Been in Milwaukee area since i started skiing and have been to pretty much all these places. If youre looking to ski a lot you'll want to stick to the top 4 cause of distance'


The Rock - 20 minutes
Expensive and they dont seem to know what they are doing for a lot of setups. Went a couple times this year to hit the airbag (closest place around with one, super sick) and their park was super sketchy. Terrible angles on the features

Sunburst - 45 Minutes
The place I've skied for the last however many years. Close-bye, cheap pass ($200ish right now), they've got their shit together. Fairly small hill for normal skiing, but the best park skiing in the area by far. 2 parks, 2 tow ropes, lots of features and hot laps

Alpine Valley - 45 Minutes
High speed quad, bigger hill for skiing around, cant speak to their park within the last few years. Beware the bus-fulls of tourists and gapers from Chicago

Little Switzerland - 45 Minutes
Pretty good for skiing around the hill(back and front sides), wouldnt really bother with it much for park. The stuff ive seen setup there has been pretty sketch

Wilmot - 60 minutes
Been a while since ive been there, I remember there being a decent amount of features, nothing noteworthy though.

Tyrol Basin - Hour and a half
Always has been really sick for skiing park, but way to far away for skiing there a lot

Cascade - Hour and a half
Largest hill for skiing around, used to be the tops back in the day for park but no longer. Theyve got a rail yard but nor much for jumps. Really long park laps, chair only.

Nordic Mountain - 2 Hours
Have only been there for post season a long time ago, cant imagine its very good

Granite Peak - 3 Hours
Sickest park around WI, but way to far away for skiing on the reg

Is there any transportation options to the rock or sunburst from Milwaukee?

The Rock had one jump when I went and some decent rails. Would go back but burst has got tons of rails and if you hit jumps right after they are built its good but sometimes landings and take offs get flat after a while. The last set up had a good jump though.

burst is the best youll get for the distance, but granite peak is by far the best you'll find around

cascade is alright. devils head in my opinion is better. as far as milwaukee area skiing, nothing is too close besides the rock which is pretty fun. otherwise, theres little switzerland which can have a pretty fun park at times, but is an overall small place, alpine valley which has a pretty average park IMO, and then sunburst, which i hear has a pretty good park (although i havent gone to sunburst). i ride alpine and the rock most of the times

on a side note, if any of you wanna ski some time PM me! im looking for people to go with aside from my few friends who ski

I can hook you up with a ride to burst if you can get up to port Washington... or depending on what part of Milwaukee your in I could pick you up

Yeah I'm at MSOE, so I'm probably just going to get a pass to the rock. There is a public bus that takes me like right to the hill from my dorm.

Tyrol for park hands down. I wouldn't waste my money at Wilmot even though its so close

Tyrol's park went bad pretty quick last year. I had a pass and barely used it. Mostly skiied at Granite and actually rode Cascade's park over Tyrol's for a good portion of the season.

Chestnut is awesome, you can actually ski there vs. Granites long flat runout.
Chestnut has the best engineered jumps in the Midwest, Granite's Rails are numerous.

Don't forget a road trip to Bohemia on a lake effect weekend. You'll be hooked for life.

Hit up Marquette Michigan too. Used to be the playground of many when we had knees.

Sunburst's new owner is a racer and has no clue. Ask a lot of questions before you invest.

Little Switz's owners are terrific, it's just small, but better than The Rock (more like a pebble).

Alpine is Pricy, but decent terrain considering the local topography.
