Am I Weird for Disliking my Macbook?

I got a new Macbook because my Dell laptop was on its last leg. I thought I'd try out the Mac side of things after such good word of mouth. I knew there would be a learning curve to the OS but that was fine with me. Yet after a month in I'm still frustrated to the point of having to just walk away from it and come back again another day. So many things that were simple and intuitive on my PC are now arduous tasks and they often require me to download a fucking app to overcome some oversight by Apple. It's just absurd that for basic tasks I'd need to add an app. People claim so many things are done to make it simple yet so many things are ass backwards I don't even understand how people think it's simpler than doing things on a PC. So many odd tricks and wizardry are needed to complete tasks that on my PC I just had to click about 5 times on the right icons.

I'm keeping the computer, but is it just me? Or have other people experienced this? I know without a doubt this will be my first and last macbook.

Haha yep.

And Gato for instance just to be able to have things download while I'm away from the comp I had to download that caffeine app so it didn't sleep and halt the download. Or you have to manually switch audio outputs when using HDMI. And I really dislike how for video thumbnails it has the play but everytime I click to highlight it and I can't find a way to turn it off. I want the thumbnail shot just not the play part. And if things are in an icon view and I want to select a bunch of files in series using shift and click it has to be in a file name ordering or it doesn't work. Those are just some basic issues. Some other problems with After Effects I never had on my PC, but those are specialized to editing and what not.

Just feel like I spend too much time googling how to do stuff instead of doing stuff.

I can not for the life of me use my girlfriends mac book, might be because its super unorganized. I'm not used to all that shit being at the bottom and she always has a bunch of documents open so whenever I minimize the one I was using I can't find it again.

I mean, I grew up using both, so it's an easy transition back and forth for the most part, but seriously? There's way harder shit. It's not Linux haha.

i think its a balance. I'm on my 2nd macbook pro now and somethings are just effortless and work better on a mac. i m currently in my 3rd year of an architecture degree and i have to use a verity of programs. some work better on a mac and some work better on a pc.
for example i find the mac versions of photoshop, illustrator, indesign and auto cad work a lot better then the pc version but rhino5 and 3dsmax work a lot better on pc.
to balance this in the pass I've had to bootcamp my mac so half of the drive is os and the other being windows but now i've just brought a powerful desktop to do all the pc stuff.

It's all about what you are used to. Try to use a mac like a Windows and you will be frustrated.

Use command + click for selecting multiple items not in order, this is the same as on PC. The HDMI sound thing sounds annoying, but one use could be having headphones plugged in and an HDMI monitor. There might be a way to tweak this. Not sure what you mean with the video thumbnails, for me it shows a thumbnail with a play button, I can click that and the icon will play, double click to open in QuickTime, or space bar to preview. If you accidentally click and want it to pause, wave the mouse over the icon and it should let you click to pause it. Last thing, the downloads pausing is to save battery, many people like this feature if they are on the go (phone, tablet, small laptop, etc.). It turns your battery life to shit otherwise. You might be able to tweak this in energy saver preferences, but it sounds like you got it working in caffeine.

As far as the little differences go, I love how easy it is to do screenshots/partial screenshots. I also really like how you can make multiple virtual screens, very easy to swipe between programs. The new notifications are cool, especially if you have imessage set up (make sure you select your phone for starting new conversations). Hot corners is pretty sweet, I mostly use the screensaver one, but it is pretty useful for switching windows because you can pull up all windows, or all windows for that application (useful for multiple word docs etc.). Check out things like flux and geektool, and flutter is really cool too.

The only thing I like more about my macbook than my pc was the torrenting. It was simple on my dell but I prefer to torrent shit on my mac. Also I can't figure out how to script or code for shit on a macbook

Macs are so over hyped its rediculous. I have had one for a while now and I hate every minute with it.

Its good for internet browsing, messing around, video editing, thats about it.

So fucking uselss for anything back in school, the excel on MACS is horrible, for the same price ll buy two new pc's

I loved my macbook pro once I got used to it. I reccommend going through the settings immediately and customizing the controls. If you can't get used to the mouse for example, go to settings and set it to what you're used to. Or if you prefer to double click something etc.. customize those settings.

I do not have the Macbook Pro anymore, but for the few years I had it, it never even blinked. Ran smoothly like the first day I go it. And thats with downloading tons of content (piratebay), virus free of course. I can't say the same for Windows. I also never spent the same amount of money on a Windows laptop so that can be a reason why.

When I switched from an Iphone to the Note 2 there was definitely a learning curve. But, thats what I loved about it. The iphone upgrades felt like I wasn't getting new technology. So, it was so fun to learn all the new features. You can treat the Macbook like that.

I can't wait to have the extra money to afford a new Mac to be honest... But, no you're not weird.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll stay hopeful.

And Dingo I mean obviously there are harder things, but I am trying to use it for more workflow type of things with my programs and the OS works against me. I guess it just takes time. No its not Linux, but funny you say that because a certain degree of people will laugh at you and say Linux itself is quite basic also. It just depends on who you're talking to.

I've had my mac for about 8 months now and I haven't gotten used to it. Some things are easier, like general browsing, but documents confuse me. Why does it not have any application like paint? Why is Pages more useless than god damn Word Perfect.

Yeah it will take you awhile to get going with it. I understand how you feel with downloading programs just to make the thing work. But then you realize that maybe that program does something extra that you can't do natively in Windows.. and that's pretty cool.

Both definitely have advantages/ disadvantages. My Mac is my go everywhere computer and my Windows is my stay at home desktop. I go back and forth depending on what I'm doing. Something doesn't work on one? I'll go to the other. All about the right tools.

My favorite thing about my mac is the track pad. It's incredibly powerful and the best of any I've ever used. I honestly prefer a mouse to any track pad but apple's. I don't understand how other laptop users deal with theirs, most seriously suck.

I have a new iMac and although I don't regret it I am a little disappointed.

They are ridiculously expensive.

They are not customization like PC's. What you buy is what you get.

They overheat especially when video editing

I solely purchased the iMac for video editing and I'm a little disappointed with Final Cut Pro x/motion 5. I find that it has no where near the features that final cut 7 or adobe suit once had.

I downloaded Adobe Ae and Pr but the iMac has trouble handling it and often crashes.

My cousin recently purchased the 15-inch macbook pro with retina display. Mac talks boastfully about its fast video editing skillz. Firstly, Final Cut Pro x crashes just like it did on the iMac same with logic pro. Though, the retina display is beautiful I would rather buy a PC and use adobe for video editing.

Macs are like full tilt hype if fewer people purchased full tilts.

Started out on macs, switched to PC. Now I cant stand macs. The work flow is so disorganized and inefficient. Minimizing sucks. Switching between programs sucks. Trying to work between two or more programs sucks. Interface sucks. Photoshop is more disorganized, ableton doesn't run as smooth. /endrant

Protip: My $300 Asus laptop works better than $1000 Dells I have used.

I never understood why you would want to spend 1000 on a laptop and have to buy two operating systems when you could by a 500 laptop and just run one OS that can do everything.

sometimes i feel like software updates arent very progressive. for instance, ios7 you have to tap like 4 fucking times in different parts of the screen to actually call someone from your messages.

I havent used mavericks but i feel like some of the features might be like ios7 and actually make things a bit more complicated. Im still running 10.6 (snow leopard) and it is so intuitive. Its really the greatest, and considered by many to be the best OS ever made.

so far i havent had any compatibility issues, but ill probably start to see some in the near future. It seems crazy but you might enjoy "downgrading" to 10.6. Literally the only feature it lacks, that makes me consider upgrading, is the messaging app that lion and up have

There's no reason to ever minimize anything on a mac. It's so easy to cycle through everything that's up on your screen just by swiping three fingers up on the track pad (or whatever you've changed the default to). I often have a ton of things open on my computer and do that to seamlessly move from object to object.

I've been using a mac for 6 years now and every time I use a PC I want to blow my brains out. It took me a little while to memorize all of the little "tricks" that macs have, and all of the different nuances, but now that I have everything down I can operate a mac a million times faster than a PC. I have no need to do programming or the things that a PC offers, and I run a lot of different modeling softwares for my work and everything runs incredibly smoothly.

When I first made the switch it was rough. It took me about 3 months to figure out how to get to a comfortable level to ditch my Sony Vaio.
A LOT of googling, asking friends, and trips to the Genius.
I was really into hacking software at the time and I remember trying to get CS4 on it and just being frustrated and thought it was the worst.
After I really ditched the PC and went for it I progressed a lot, It's just a lot more intuitive than I was used to or expected it to be.
I have boot camp for a while, but got rid of it after the first year because I had figured out how to do everything on Mac...except play .exe games and files.
I'm on my second Macbook Pro now and have been using Mac for 6 years. I use windows full time at work and my school gave me a Windows PC with Windows 8. I just don't like using it. It's slower, laggier, freezes, and just an absolute pain to use.

Once you get comfortable with OSX and try to use Windows again you'll realize it. It's not that you won't be able to, it's just that you won't want to.

Dude fuck no its not jsut you. I went mac about a year ago and I absolutely fucking HATE it.

People who say Mac 'just works' and 'is so clean and simple' stopped using windows at Vista or XP. They've never tasted the sweet embrace of Win 7, which is a wicked fucking OS.

The macs are buggy as all hell get out. I found my Win 7 machine dramatically less buggy than my MBP.

Well, sure. It's just advice for trying to make the best of a bad situation. Everyone I know who owns a Macbook running Windows is either:
A. Is a PC user with too much money and treats the Mac as a fashion statement but still wants to run Windows. Or
B. Is primarily a Mac OS user but occasionally wants to test Windows feature - IT people and cross-platform engineers.

I've used ML/Mavricks and win7 a lot for the past two years or so. I used to run win 7 on my editing desktop, which i spent alot of time on as well.


I also used winXP for all of highschool, etc. I have extensive use with both OSX and Windows, luckily I skipped Vista.


Bottom line: Both work.

I understand people getting pissed because they spent a lot on a macbook pro retina or a 27" iMac, but thats not the operating systems fault, thats youre fault for doing poor research.

That being said, I'm typing this from my custom built desktop that has both osx and win 7, currently using osx ML (going to do a new hackintosh with mav soon).

I like OSX over window 7. I don't hate win7, but I prefer OSX. Im not sure if im used to it or if the layout/work flow is just smoother for my personality/brain type (joke) but win 7 has always had little quarks that bothered me and I'm stoked to use OSX 90% of the time now vs about 50% before.

Every operation system has its shortscuts, downfalls, etc it just depends on which one you conform to the best.

Paint sucks anyways, download gimp that shits free and is basically photoshop. And who doesn't use google docs now days? My work runs entirely on google docs (word, excel, etc) and office 2011 worked great for me last time I had to use it, if you're in school for engineering dont buy a fucking mac haha

I have a 13" MBair and i fucking love it, its the best deal when it comes to macbooks, the retinas are insanely prices (and a high res screen at 13" is ludicrous) and really the only upside of a 15" is a dedicated graphics card. My MBair handles basically editing and basic gaming no problem and the battery life is like 8-9hrs if youre just surfing the internet. I think I paid $1200 for mine, unless you edit every weekend while you're travelling, the MBair is prime.

Easy fix on the HDMI sound thing, once you change it a couple times manually it should learn that when you put in the cable that you want sound through it. Then it should do it automatically.... mine automatically goes through my TV when I plug in HDMI
