Good Film Schools For skiers

I am an aspiring cinematographer and i am considering going to college for it as well. I also love to ski and i have to be able to ski wherever i go to college. Considering this could anyone give me some suggestions to good colleges, +k to those who do! Thanks

don't try to tailor your eduction around your leisure time.

that being said.
USC, UCLA and AFI are 5-8 hours from Mammoth
NYU and Columbia a few hours from upstate skiing

or go to RISD and make friends with somebody who has a helicopter to commute to vermont or new york.

that's if you want a career in film.

If you want to spend years after you graduate dealing with people declining your applications for unpaid internships while shooting weddings all summer to try to make ends meet, then go to a school in colorado.

I would recommend doing more research to find out what field of film because most commonly there is no general film course, but know that much of the glam of having a film degree is not what most people get out of going to film school. The odds are that if you really can't go to film school unless theres skiing then the likelihood of excelling is lower. Go where the program is best fit not because they have a killer ski scene. I don't want to shit on your dreams but film school is not all that it is cracked up to be. Realistically, you won't come out and be rolling in the dough, let alone afford to film 24/7. Major in business and find out how you can promote your media and make money doing it. Go to school near a resort and film in your free time, but don't waste money on film school because most of your work will be in the studio. A lot of ski filming is something you could figure out, not be taught.

Not really worth going to filmschool unless youre going to a top school, just going to a random school near skiing and going into their film program won't exactly be your best option.

If you really want to get into film and want to go to film school, I'd suggest doing some research and going to a school in NYC, LA, Chicago, etc otherwise you're basically getting a glorified communications degree. I know a few guys who did Film at the U of Utah and they say its a cool program and they learned some cool stuff, but getting a film degree from any school that isn't top 25 for their film program is pretty worthless in the film community.

But, the good news is that you dont need a film degree to be an awesome film maker, most jobs filmers get are based on their connections and experience, not on a piece of paper.


Like someone said, you could study business and learn how to build your own production company, or study something else you really enjoy and do filming on the side. Either way, if you have a passion for filming and apply yourself, you can succeed with or without school.

i know of several production companies whose crew is sourced exclusively from CFS, it is not a bad school, and if you have a film degree and a desire to work, you will get work. Theres some good programs in Santa Fe, which is not too far from Taos, I know a couple people who got BFA's in film from RMCAD in denver and have gotten pretty far in the 2-3 years since just through their connections from the school.

I mean spots do hire from RMCAD, CFS, CU, & DU, and there are some awesome small production companies in the region, but the applicants far outweigh the jobs pretty heavy in this area. I have graduates from all 4 applying regularly for unpaid internships with us who don't even care about skiing, they just need an in at a production company. And I know more than a few rather talented unemployed film grads who are still looking too. the thirst is real with mountain states film degrees.

oh well i did not realize you were talking solely about skiing production, in which case, just get a camera and start filming on your own. you don't need a degree for that.
