Superunknown launcher to pro skier career

Is really superunknwon from level 1 a launcher to skiers to make it in the skiing industry

Pretty much all the winners of the superunknown contest are or were big names in the skiing scene, so yes it is a true launcher, the only thing is that the level is so high today that finalists generally aren't really "superunknown".

Do they have a rule or something that says that someone who is not "pro" but everyone knows about. Was tom wallisch well known before superunknown?

Tom was toatally unknown. People had seen him ski because the zoolander edit was super fun to watch(but the skiing wasnt overly special), but NO ONE thought he was ever gonna blow up.

The way i understand it is he made a gigantic leap immediatley upon moving out to U of U for school. Pretty darn cool story. that is the biggest reason NS has such a hardon for him- cause he came from obscurity to prominence so quickly, all the while representing the style that NS represented.

Yes. Superunkown launch careers the skier to pro then obscurity which is cool even some of them now are known and edits because ns show threads and stuff but most still see a big launcher

he was not totally unknown by any means. Anyone who followed the roundtop riders edits knew tom had alot of skill. He was only known to those who really followed skiing avidly and the superunknown broadened his popularity. However the skiing in the zoolander edit and others was ubsurd for the time. 270 pretzel 450 out had not been done along with alot of other rail tricks they did in those edits...

If you remember, Sandy was invited as a wild card and it was explained that he didn't really fit the spirit of Superunknown, but they wanted him to come along anyways (and then he went with them the Whistler too). So Sandy wasn't technically a finalist.

Every winner moves on to become a fairly known name after winning. Not only that, but most of the finalists and even some semi-finalists advance in their career in some way after the edits drop. So even if you don't win, you at least get major exposure.

There are runner ups/honorable mentions (ie ahmet, martini, lj, etc) that are doing more than some super unknown winners (ie jd, brogan, etc)

But it's safe to say if you win super unknown it no doubt helps your career. Super unknown has lost a bit of its soul with the availability of video cameras, back when Tom won there were actually pretty "unknown" people unless you knew them from your local hill. These days EVERYONE makes edits and posts them on ns so of course the ns community knows pretty much every super unknown these days.
