Communication Breakdown in Society

So I just drunk dialed a few friends from Tahoe that I was good buddies with when I lived out there..And I began thinking: What happened to talking on the phone? What happened to calling up the girl in 8th grade that you liked and talking about stupid shit for 2 hours every night after school? What happened to picking up the phone and calling someone that you need to get in touch with urgently instead of sending a text or email in CAPS, or with an URGENT notation on the email?

The deterioration of our society is kind of pathetic. The current generations depend on "likes"... "Notice me please I love you!!", "If you don't follow me I'll kill myself!!" and "if you unfollow me I see it and I will unfollow you!!"... We become so accustomed to this type of shit so slowly that we become numb to it.

I was watching a Netflix documentary on Facebook the other day and one of the contributing sociologists put it best; "they keep taking two steps forward when it comes to taking our privacy rights away, and then when people get mad, they take one step back, and it looks like they did something to satisfy the concern/anger of people"...It's so true and pretty fucked up if you think about it.

Our government is fucked, our environment is fucked, our society and morals are fucked, and we've become one big dumb community of social media zombies that have no regard for the betterment of cultures/society in general.

I have no particular political affiliation (I actually hate politics even though my dad was a secret service agent for 20 years), I don't really believe in the whole climate change bit (although I do think that we are obviously raping the planet), and I like to think that we have bright and intelligent generations on the up....
But lets get real...The kids in todays world are fixated on the amount of likes they get, how skinny they are, how much attention they get in any way possible, and what kind of smart phone they have....

While working at the front desk of a 4 Diamond Resort in Squaw, 80% of the kids checking in with their parents would be: "What's the WiFi password here?"...No "please", no "thank you"....Just expecting to be tended to....It sickens me. What do you guys think?

And before any rebuttals start coming in that say "the worlds always been like that maan, social media just amplified it"...

No fucking way. No kids back in the 90's or early 2000's had the concept of the internet and social media so ingrained into their brain that they went into message boards and chat rooms and talked shit about everyone and everything....Sure, we went into chat rooms. But at the time it was pretty nerve-wracking and most kids (who weren't complete idiots) took part in the craziness but not to a ridiculous level...we just joked around for a few minutes and then signed off because our parents were over our shoulders or because our "computer time" was up.

I guess this is all pretty pointless because no matter what, this is the world we live in now, and there's nothing I can do to change it. All I'm saying is that if we resort to a society that revolves around Twitter and Instagram (which we pretty much do already)...we should start worrying.

But I wholeheartedly agree. Besides a few select forums, I don't participate in the social media fixations. I contact my friends and family with phones, texts, emails, or in person. What wise does one person really need?

I also never use "LOL" or other lazy fucking acronyms because it's an abomination of our language. motherfucker

...maybe I'm too old for this, maybe the worlds gone retarded and mike judge was on to something with 'Idiocracy.'

Fucking thank you. This might be the most sensible post I've seen on NS so far, and not even because you're agreeing with me...

I was kind of skeptical to post this rant post here because I feel like the majority of NS members are younger and they'll automatically be against this view but it's good to see someone else who gets it.


I'm not saying I am correct and everyone else is wrong....All I'm doing is pointing out a fact that is actually occurring in society that we should discuss...Because it really is effecting everything...


And sort of on topic (because I mentioned it in my initial post)...I feel as if foreigners and immigrants are completely infecting our country with burdens that can't be handled to begin with, let alone with the deficit and debt/SHIT MESS that our country is already in...Why not just cut the borders off for a certain period of time until we get our shit somewhat together? The illegal alien situation is worse than its ever been and it's literally (and rapidly) burying this country into the ground. Obama is focused on forcing people into buying into something (how the FUCK is that American or obeying the Constitution by the way?!), while the bigger problems are just perpetuating and escalating to an insane magnitude.

I'll say it again, I AM NOT POLITICAL AT ALL...I just know a problem when I see one and this economy is doomed. How anyone can not agree with this is amazing to me.Let's talk about this, seriously.What is everything coming to? How could our society/economy ever be saved?

Not like the jerk-offs in the Secret Service today who were promoted from the airport security line or standing at the door of the DC museum as a security guard and are getting fired for doing coke and going to strip clubs overseas while on duty....

All I'm saying is: If anyone were to know what is best for this country and how it should be run, it would be my dad. A guy who grew up in the slums of Hells Kitchen and worked his ass of to become a football star and later, a Secret Service Agent who became one of Reagan's best friends. He served for Carter, older Bush, Reagan, Clinton (I realize those aren't in order)....and he was the best at what he did...All of the presidents loved having him on their regiment, and he loved each of them...he had no political views, he was completely neutral.

He despises Obama and thinks what's going on in our country is fucked up...The man is the exact portrait of the American Dream....Who else would be better to listen to about the state of the economy or what is going on with our society/world than him? Riddle me that.

Ok cool man, tell us more about how you didn't read my thread because you deemed it as not correct by your opinions/standards. I could care less.

But you are completely missing the point. How we, as humans, connect with each other is much much more important than evolving mechanics and materials that we use for convenience.

Ready? Explain this... People (of all ages) out at dinner together sitting there with their eyes glued to their iPhone and not socializing with other people whatsoever. It's a pretty common occurrence now and, soon enough, it's gonna be the new "no elbows on the table."

How you don't see the importance in interpersonal communication is ridiculous to me. I respect your opinion on evolution in a general sense though. Cell phones became iPhones, but iPhones became everything humans need/want and it completely consumed us. Wake up.

Haha. I'm not even trying to sound like a douchey, but my dad is a pretty special guy. Did you not read the the summary of his life that I told in one of the above posts? It's super impressive stuff. From poor Irish neighborhood in Queens rags to riches just because he was a super hard working, personable, tough dude who had the most excellent opportunities open up for him at the right times throughout his life.

I'm not one to brag about shit, especially about my pops (I actually never used to tell anyone about his days working for the Service), but you're just being a dick dude.

Op I am with you on this 100%. It annoys me how everyone in our age group only seems to care about the material things in life. And all these guys are missing your point completely. Like the Reagan celebrity comment and the evolution of technology. Obama isn't last looking at the serious problems of the deficit instead he is looking at gay marriage and introducing programs that add to the debt. And for the evolution of technology those were all good things that helped humanity whether or not how small they are. Do all of you that are hating on op think its a good thing that the majority of the our generation can't look each other in the eye when talking to them. or that they do not care about politics or how it affects all of us. You're watching too much tv. My family gets together every Sunday for dinner and nobody is glued to their phones. All week everybody looks forward to it. If we get a chance we also all get together random days of the week. It's an awesome time. No phones. Lots of families still do this.

and before cell phones, you think there was no distractions?? Ever heard of TV? That shit has been distracting people for decades. And yes, lots of families watch TV at dinner.

Actually the comparisons to horse carriage vs car, or ship vs plane are pretty good.

London to new York used to take almost a week. That's time spent socializing on board a ship, eating dinner together, and being stuck together. A plane meant it was now a little over 6 hours, and no one had to talk to anyone else.

Once again, the truth is told...And how none of you other contributors can grasp this concept is honestly frightening.


I've also come to the realization that this type of topic isn't best discussed on a site full of pre-pubescent, tall-tee wearing children...Somebody opens up a forum for genuine discussion, and nothing but negative comments come out of it...

This is a site where humans like Henrik Harlaut and Phil Casabon are cherished, big mountain skiing is rarely mentioned or acknowledged, and super nice, talented kids like Bobby Brown and Nick Goepper are hated on...It's absurd, and I'm quitting this thread so I don't waste the energy in my fingers anymore...

And where people like you honestly believe that, because their father's spent time with multiple presidents of the united states, said fathers are some of the world's leading experts in economics and know way more about how to solve the countries problems than all of the people paid to advise the president on such issues.

Calm the fuck down, all of you...If we circle back to where this thread started, you might remember that I was kindly trying to open up a forum for discussion on our SOCIETY and how we need to snap out of the technology coma that we are induced with right now.

Sure, people read papers on the train back in the day, but: a.) that picture was a very rare photo, I'm 100% sure that there are/was always people on a train/plane that enjoy conversation with their seat mate. and b.) reading the paper is a whole lot fucking different than scrolling through Instagram, Facebook, or any other stupid fucking social media outlet so that they can see how many "likes" they get and they can feel better about themselves...

Social media is polluting today's youth. Plain and simple.

Third, I'm not mad. I just think it's pretty stupid for you to say that, because your dad was a member of secret service, "Who else would be better to listen to about the state of the economy or what is going on with our society/world than him?" Your dad was a secret service member. Not an economics expert. Just because he has seen how the white house works, it doesn't mean he knows how to solve the economy problem. Maybe that isn't what you meant, but it's essentially what you said.

Why? A ton of people now use twitter as their source for news.

Again, why? People have always wanted to feel popular and well-liked. All social media does is make it easier to judge that, even if it is in a very superficial way.

I think you're making a lot of speculation in this thread, there are definitely people in this world that care more about likes than they do about people in real life. Last generation I'm sure it was all about girls wanting to be friends with the cheerleaders jock group and be popular. But there are also many many people in this generation that don't give a fuck about any of that, i've never known anyone that threatened to kill themselves over likes on Facebook. It's usually over a girl leaving them this is nothing new!

You are as annoying as peppermillreno (if that is not you), dang ol Boston folk getting all worked up when people do not agree with them.

Embrace technology. When books came out people thought that was polluting everybody. Then, radio and TV's were the devil. If anything you should be complaining about the shit content on TV. All of those shitty reality shows on cable that keep the simple minded occupied. That is way worse than teenagers communicating via social media.

You're mad you're feeling grown up... No need to take it out on everybody who uses a cell phone. The internet is an amazing tool. Instant access to any information you desire. It is just you use the Internet to vent out your shitty frustrations.

I had a family member in the secret service, and a kid in my high schools dad worked with Timothy McCarthy (he was literally standing next to him when he got shot, you can see him on the video.) secret service members do not know the "secrets of the country" you need to get over yourself. I bet your dad scouted locations for the presidents vacations and never actually said two words to him. #troll

I've never seen a site that sucks as much as Newschoolers...Give a bunch of wise ass kids a keyboard and this is what happens..Hate, hate, and more hate.

You kids are single handedly ruining the sport of fresskiiing...and that's coming from some of the legends of the sport, not just me. You guys are seen as a joke to the actual freeskiing community...But keep polluting, it'll keep you entertained and it'll make you feel better about yourselves...Which, at the end of the day, is all that matters.Right?
