Let me take you through my last week

Last Thursday: final interview for job. Got offer. Wasn't too pumped but was pumped for the $40k salary. Job was at wb mason doing door to door business supply sales.

Friday: accepted job. Planned Wednesday as first day.


Got things ready, got suit etc.


Wednesday. Went out with trainer. Blew a half tank of gas driving around selling office supplies.

Thursday : repeat. 175 mi on my car that day alone.

Last night called the training manager and told him it wasn't for me and he got really mad. I was a geoscience major but I wanted to try it... And I realized it just sucked. I know I might not get the best responses here but I can't sleep so the question is... Am I a jerk?

You're not a jerk if you really hated what you were doing, on the other hand it often takes a few days to appreciate or see the fun in a new job. In the end it's all up to you! You could see this as a lesson to not apply for jobs you have never liked in the first place an just do for the money, because you're still gonna spend a shitload of time on doing the job which sucks even with a good salary

No, you aren't a jerk. You don't owe them anything. If it's not for you, then it's not for you. I can't say I blame you either. Especially when you start to run the numbers....it's just not worth it to put that kind of wear and tear on your car for only 40k. Not to mention that d2d sales blows unicorn nuts.

The door to door sales people piss me off. I'm not speaking from a customer POV, I'm talking from an employee POV. It's shitty work managed by shitty people. I think I'd rather handout porn flyers on the strip than work for those people.

no that doesnt automatically make you a jerk-- as people said, that's a lot of wear and tear on your car, and door to door sales are obnoxious.

i gotta say though.. how did you not know that it wouldnt be for you before you started? there were no surprises right? you knew you'd be driving around doing door to door

Man they expect it. I'm not familiar with the company but if they're anything like every door to door sales job they hire nearly everyone that seems to be able to put a sentence together, and then they let you go if you don't hit their targets.

If they're paying you 40k they're going to want you to be selling 80k. If you don't think you'd be doing that then you'd be out.

yes, thats quite fucking shady. Better not ever mention that to a prospective employer.

It sounds like no one in here has ever been apart of hiring at a corporate company. there is a lot of time, money, and energy spent recruiting candidates. For you to accept the job after learning all about it in the recuruiting proccess and then quitting 2 days later is bad...really bad. you just basically took a huge shit on them. You also took the job at the start of the quarter, so now whoever comes in will come in at a really shitty time to try and learn.

What you should have done: stuck it out for a few months whilst looking around for another job in a field you would rather be involved with. then give your boss a heads up that this isnt for you if you are feeling good about another job. Try and give a minimum 2weeks notice; a month would be even better.

Honestly, sales is a great skill to have, and a great experience to go through no matter what field you end up in. Its over now, you cant do anything to make it better so quit worrying about it. But you should know that is not the way to treat people, and you did fuck up.

As someone who has been the hiring manager in a similar situation, i would much rather have someone finish out the quarter, instead of bailing one week in leaving me shorthanded and searching for a body.

depends though. if he was already shitting the bed, this could turn into his excuse for a subpar quarter or put a cherry on top of a quarter in which he killed it.

Either way, you treated that company and that hiring manager like shit. I hope it doesnt come back to bite you down the road, but morally i dont know how you can do something like that and not know you were wrong. My pops always told me "let your conscience be your guide". Your conscience has already spoken.

There is nothing morally wrong with accepting a job and then realizing it is not for you. No call no show would be fucked up. But, admitting it is not for him and moving on is fine. The company will move on. Yeah it may have been a waste of time for the company. But that doesn't make OP a piece of shit.

who called him a piece of shit? I absolutely think what he did was morally wrong...and pretty much everyone who works in the corporate world would agree.

sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, but quiting on someone that early is the kind of shit you expect out of teenagers working at pizza hut. I guess it figures that the majority of people in this thread say he handled it the right way. Its sad.

I keep noticing when people don't agree with certain NSers the first thing they do is resort to bashing based on age. A lot of NSers are older than 18... The site has been around for a while. If there was an actual poll of the age of NS I'd bet it is older than you think.

Life is way too short to work some job you don't like. It's sad that you would continue to work a job you don't enjoy. Yeah sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. But, if you hate a job. Fuck continuing to work there. The company will figure it out. Just don't plan on using them on any resume in the future.

quitting on someone that early would most likely be easier on the company, they have already done the whole recruiting process all they need to do is call up their second choice and say you got the job.

Compare that to having to go through the whole process again in two month, because any previous candidate who is still looking for a job two months later you probably didn't want in the first place

I've done the same thing. I felt like shit because I let the company down but I figured it would be easier for me to quit early so they could hire someone waiting for a job rather than quitting half way through. I did it because I had some health issues that I saw interfering with it. I felt bad but it would have been worse waiting. Plus, they probably predict a lot of this stuff. In the end if it's just a random job to make money And not your field then who cares. Leave it off your resume. Life is too short to worry about some company who forgot your name the day after you quit.

Normally I agree with you 100%. But a door to door company seems to operate in a different way. It's almost like their business is hiring and firing. The turnover rates are likely huge anyway and if his heart wasn't in it he more than likely would have been let go in the first two weeks. I was hired for I think 4 high pressure sales jobs before finding steady work and I didn't accept any of them.

A typical work environment outside of high pressure sales I would agree with you though. They owe you nothing and you owe them everything. They're the ones who are taking the chance on you and giving you the opportunity to work for them. You do everything in your power to keep them happy and be respectful.

Now for my story- I was working as a marketing coordinator for a company, but after getting to work for 3 months the job really was very little marketing and a lot of tender response and putting together sales quotes. Not really what I had in mind and I really hated every day going in there. It was tense because the bosses were hardasses and there was very little wiggle room.

One Friday a job offer came in to go work for a company I had been working towards getting into for about a year prior. I had really wanted that job, but the one stipulation was they wanted me to start the following monday. Even still it was a really tough decision because I knew the spot I would be putting them in and they took a chance on me. I still ended up taking the new job because it was what I've always wanted to do, and I'm still doing it now and loving it. The owner did end yelling at me though. I deserved it, I fucked him over. But it was an opportunity that likely would not present itself again.

This. This is how someone should handle the situation. You have to do whats best for you, even when it crews someone else over sometimes. you shouldnt feel good about it, but sometimes you need to do it.

As much as I agree that people should own when they make mistakes or screw someone over, this post goes against everything you've been arguing so far. Plus, the OP asked if he was a jerk because he didn't feel good about it.

To OP: what is the fall back job you are working right now in the interim? Im guessing you gotta pay rent somehow and a shitty job would have been a good way to do that while you looked for a different, better job.
