Hot lapping vs filming

When Im with my crew filming, I always feel like I just want to ski with no one following me/ me waiting for them to set up. Seeing the final product of an edit is always fun, but I just feel I would rather just be stupid and do whatever I want. Which do you rather?

Filming is super fun when there is minimal involved, and when the filmer and.skier are on the same page.

Filming is fun but it get's annoying if you just wanna do whatever you want and when filmers/riders don't know what they're doing its just a huge pain in the ass and not worth it. This year we took like 6 days out of the season and dedicated them to filming all day. One in the beginning of the season then 2 midway and 3 toward the end. It should be pretty cool to see how far we came throughout the season. Then we just dicked around. This way you get a lot of filming done, more than I realized we would and it doesn't consume your whole season. I see people filming almost everyday they're out and half the time they just fall and it's so useless and time consuming. Sometimes we set dates but usually its just whenever we're feelin it haha, then we figure out what kind of runs we wanna film, get consistent, then go out and do it.

Waiting for the cameraman is a given when filming. When you're hot lapping the park most days, taking a couple off to film really isn't that bad and can be a lot of fun. Hike some rails, talk to other guys in the park, enjoy the environment. I find a lot of fun in not hot lapping every once in a while anyway. Makes me focus more on learning new tricks and getting better. Makes for more time to joke around and have fun in ways other than skiing too.

I'm generally the one behind the camera when my friends and I are filming and can see how having to wait for my can get annoying, but at the end of the day it really only makes a difference of like 10 minutes tops. I'd say that's well worth it for making an edit.

Comprimse, hot lap follow cams, works out great buy follow cams get old. It's best to tell people to hot lap while you setup on a feature.

All depends what you wanna do. You wanna see an edit at the end of the day/month/season? Gotta film. No other way around it.

You don't care about an edit? Hot laps for days.

I like filming with other people who are as good as me just using helmet cams and phones. We can keep up with each other and ski the same lines and it doesn't distract us much and we still get the video.

I always tell myself I'm going to hike a feature and get some dope shots before I head out every day.

..aaaaaaand then I get there and fucking lose my shit. I see a bunch of rails and perfect jumps and just think to myself "there's no way I can spend a half hour on just ONE feature". Then I proceed ride around like at full speed like a crackhead until I start eating shit and go home. It never fails.

Lately I've been trying to get out of that mindset and conserve my energy throughout the day. It also helps if you are riding with a dedicated camera dude who is just as stoked as getting a shot as you are landing it.

Hot laps are the best, just cruising feature to feature in the park is way way more fun that trying to get sick shots and whatnot. people who are good enough to make edits of switch 2 on, back 4 out should take time to put it to film. The rest of us who can just 2 out of a rail, or tail grab 360 a jump, well we all have seen those edits and they aren't very special

When I film I usually do a lot of follow cams. I ride up with the person I'm filming adjust my settings either on the way up or right when I get to the top and I'm usually ready to go by the time the guy I'm filming is ready.

My mindset for filming is to get ready as fast as possible because if a person is waiting on their cameraman it will probably throw them off their game, it's nerve racking enough to know that a person is following you and everything you do will be recorded. So why throw your friend off his game?

Have them lap while you get ready at the feature you want to shoot. Then shoot a few times, rinse and repeat.

but seriously though, you don't progress as fast when you're on another agenda. I think I'd rather spend my time getting better right now than filming a lot.

Im all for hot laps. I feel like unless youre very good at film and edit, I really dont think its worth it. SKiing to me is way more fun when you just get laps on laps on laps. I sometimes do gopro POV stuff just for kicks and to show some clips, but IMO unless youre looking for sponsership/season edit, just ski its way more fun.

I agree with pussyfooter, I think the best is when the filmer will post up at a jump/rail and the skier hot laps by. I get just as stoked when I get a perfect shot as the guy who actually did the trick. My only problem is finding people who will film me too haha

Couldn't have said it better. I'm a huge fan of taking hot laps, but when I'm filming they get old and I tend to lose the "creative direction" of what I'm doing, making the shots I get just like everyone else's and not as aesthetically pleasing to watch...Filming tripod (at least for me as a filmer) makes for way sicker shots because I'm focused solely on filming and not on skiing/holding the glide cam right/keeping up with the rider. It comes down to this...hot lapping is more fun, filming is more rewarding. If you just want to fuck around, don't bring the camera.

Something that i just started doing that i wish i did earlier is to write down tricks you wanna get shots of on a piece of paper, and stick it in your jacket pocket. hot lap and get the tricks dialed for a few days/weeks, and then take a day or two to film all day and do the shots you wrote down. cross them off as you go along. This way you can be way more productive when filming, and not get a million lip on back 2's.

True. I mainly get that pressure from people around me, rather than a camera rolling. I'm not really good enough to film that much anyways.

get big batteries and big sd cards that way you can turn your camera on on the lift and do the whole run in one shot and edit it into single clips just try to be speedy from feature to feature
