So ive been hearing lots of rumors that yellowstones gonna blow, and were all fucked. If you google animals leave from yellowstone some stuff comes up, are we fucked? or no
Its also a normal time of year for bison to migrate... people are making a huge deal out of this anyways.
If the yellowstone caldera does blow up, pretty much anywhere within a 500-1000 mile radius is going to be instantly fucked, so I'm not too worried about it.
The yellowstone caldera is also "due to blow up any day" and has been for years, so yes it could blow up, but like jake said, if it blows up you will definitely know. No one knew Mt St Hellen was gonna blow up, just one day it exploded, thats how volcanos/calderas work.
holy shit imagine if you get the warning that it is going to blow up in a few hours imagine how many people would be trying to buy plane tickets the fuck out it would be a shitshow
Scientists knew Mount St Helens was gonna blow weeks before, they just didn't know that it was gonna blow half its face off and shower everything within a 200 mile radius with 3 inches of ash.
Mt. St Helen had been bulging and exploding for months before it blew. I really doubt yellowstone would blow without any warning at all.
However it's really really unlikely we will every see that. Cascadia earthquake or a major eruption (not supervolcano) is a more likely threat. Also the earthquake could hit with less of a warning.
They knew it was rumbling and getting quakes before hand, like many volcanoes do. They said it was a probability but volcanoes do that all the time and most of the time they don't erupt or have a small not so devastating eruption, there was no way to know half a mountain would blow up. That was close to worst case scenario for rumblings to be occurring before a volcanic eruption.
Of course to a point they can predict it but volcanos/calderas have seismic activity daily, of course im not a scientist so I dunno what exactly they look for, but OP seems to think everyone knows its gonna blow cause bison migrated...
I want to go to Jackson Hole and huck Corbet's and drop S&S before it blows. Do I have time? I might be able to go later this spring, will it be too late?
As we haven't really witnessed a large caldera collapse in the time humans have had a written record, and because the evidence of the last is very old, it could happen with little to no warning. I don't think we will really know until it happens, which it will someday.
Yes, but in this case they saw a giant bulge growing on one side of the mountain, and starting to collapse. They correctly realized that a collapse could lead to a very large eruption.
When St.Helens went, everyone was watching it. It was not acting usual, even for a volcano.
Heard about this at work today.
Most likely going to be discussing it in my Protected Area Management class tomorrow morning. The instructor is a super cool dude that's worked for Pictured Rocks for like 25 years so I'm interested to hear what he has to say about it.
They left before the earthquake. They sensed the quake and left, not an eruption. And if it is the end, can it wait like 2 months so I'm cleared to run after surgery?
Im not an expert but i think the plume would blanket the entire united states and black out the sun for months. you wouldnt be fine if you lived anywhere in the US.
Glad my inlaws haven't sold their property in Texas yet. Having half of the country blanketed in ash and uninhabitable would be about the only reason I would consider moving there.
not rally. It wont affect anything more than 100 miles or so west of yellowstone...east of yellowstone is straight fucked though.
And St helens was probly the most studied volcano ever prior to its eruption because it gave so many signs it was gonna blow. The whole volcano loving world had been watching intently for weeks as the whole side of the mountain kept bulging further and further out.
Hopefully the panic keeps growing. I'd love to by a cheap house in the middle or wherever simply because it's cheap. I don't care if I'm in the path of certain death I just wanna be a homeowner ya'lls
Word. I've been thinking of trying to get a down payment together and just buying a house somewhere. Working to pay it off and then selling it toward buying a better house somewhere else. Not profiting off it just getting it paid off so I have something toward a better spot.
Even getting a couple friends to rent with give them cheap rent and have even more loot toward the mortgage.
