Five years ago. I got into skiing the year Shane passed. I remember the first issue of Powder I ever read had the McConkey tribute. Play some GNAR this weekend to keep the stoke alive

His movie this year had the best ending of any ski movie hands down. I teared up a bit and then I started whooping and hollering. Shred in Peace McConkey, you're my idol, one day I too will do a naked backflip.

It had a story better then 80% of Hollywood movies too. Watching his parts has always left me with a crazy urge to ski. Time to strap on some snowlerblades and let it rip!

We need to make the 26th international Shane McConkey day. We should celebrate and remember his life with a solemn minute of silence, immediately followed by as many butt naked runs as possible (with an optional shotgun/shot/drink a whole damn mickey before for those of us old enough) before getting kicked out. Such an inspiration to everyone who likes to play around on a mountain, be it with skis or a little nylon canopy (or in his case; both at the same time).

So much clever thinking (waterskis in powder, ski-base jumps) AND he added something so often lacking when people are filming anything gnarly these days: He added a smile or that little goofy twist that was so much needed. Had he been all about adrenaline, then he would still have been an icon but his personality sure added to him become a legend while still being active.

BSBD, Shane. May you fly free...

PS. We were at JOSS 2009 when the news hit.
The teams had arrived only a few days earlier from Trysil and it was time for the sessions in Åre, Sweden. The weather was not exactly cooperating but getting better. While waiting for one of the sessions to start, we even had a little bit of sun... and then. Ugh. That punch hit right in the stomach. The majority of the best skiers in the world getting the news almost all at the same time. So much sadness.
