Wow really? he's getting paid while still in his program or has he finished? sounds amazing!

He's just a freshman and he applied for this job. They paid for his training over spring break as well.

I have a friend in the program at U of Florida. She says its the bomb.

Haha, I guess my friend must have pretty low standards for a marine biology program.

I have a couple good friends who are in marine biology. Neither of them basically ever go to the ocean for work. They do their work almost exclusively in a lab. They even breed their specimens in the lab so they don't have to go get new ones. I think it really depends on what work you end up doing. I think a lot of people who are more into the ecology side of things get to spend more time at the beach/on a boat collecting data. That being said, a huge amount of your time is going to be spent at a desk no matter what.

Scuba diving is huge in that community. It seems like every marine biologist scuba dives. So you would meet a lot of people with similar interests.

I also know some oceanographers. They get to spend a lot more time on boats collecting data. It seems like they end up doing a lot more fieldwork than the biologists. Again a lot of them SCUBA I think.

You kinda end up working withe people who have similar interests no matter what field you go into, so even if the work isn't as great as you think, it's still awesome.

I feel like every other 13 year old wants to be a marine biologist. No wonder your parent's shot it down.

If you're not after money in life, then go for it.

i dont know anything about marine biology but im going to be finishing a wildlife biology degree in a few years once i get the money and get in state in montana

everything ill be doing is a lot of field work, but also lots of data management and interpretation

i used to want to be a marine biologist back in the day. tough to ski/go to school for this at the same time though since the schools with good programs are usually in warmer areas

I would think that schools in Alaska would have decent programs plus proximity to ski areas.

Not marine biology, but i'm graduating with a degree in aquatic biology this spring, its kinda similar work i guess just in freshwater systems instead of marine. I also wanted to be a marine biologist, but I don't really enjoy warm weather climates and the freshwater side ended up being pretty much just as interesting to me.

I have a friend who went down to florida for marine bio and what i got from him is basically if you wanna have a decent job, you have to get a masters. Don't quote me on that just what i got from him.

I would imagine it would be a different style of study. But maybe UW or UBC might be better options. But I know nothing about it.

Its a good field. Most graduates finish in environmental assessments.
