I was just given creative control to try and plan a spring park shoot for my mountain, and I'm turning to you, NS, to help me design the feature. Unfortunately, the build cannot be excessively big or expensive. I do not have access to any real budget, so it will basically boil down to what I can convince the park crew to construct(They're willing to work with me on it, but we can't sculpt the next 9 knights booter). With that in mind, I'm still looking for design ideas that could be built in a reasonable amount of time, and look good for photos (primary focus).

Things I'd like the build to incorporate:

50-70' Jump
1-2 rail features
possibly other features, butter pad, etc.
Photogenic/clean aesthetics

Think you can come up with something cool? Good designs will be rewarded, I promise. Thanks guys!

Hips are a total motherfucker to build right. As much as a groomer might *think* they can get that landing steep enough, they can't. You have a few options with hip landings:

1) Cut it with the pipe dragon. Makes for a perfect, but mega fucking short landing.
2) Cut it with the cat. Makes for a super duper flat landing, but easy to build.
3) Hand cut that entire hip landing with 20 people and those massive long shovels. Cat just is there to cut the bottom out and clear the slough.

Honestly unless you're prepared to do #3, walk the fuck away from a hip. You'll never get it big enough to be sick without having the athletes drop from the heavens to what will feel like flat concrete.

What someone else said was a wicked stepover. Those are mellow to build, super safe and they feel absolutely massive. Shots don't look huge is the major downside.... but if you put like a butter box or a bonk or something on the knuckle it could get super interesting.

a 60' jump in the middle with two landings (left and right)

Then canon features on either side of the jump (one for each landing)

The park shoot in EDIAS had a feature that was a long flat bar parallel to two jumps but perpendicular to a long flat bar rail just before the landing. You could either grind the rail or hit the jumps and tap the sideways flat rail. You'd need some super long rails though...

some sort of thing where two QPs are near each other, maybe with negative tranny or tranny set off by 45 degrees

big ass step down that drops you out of the sky, cause fuck skiers it's all about what the protographers want

Parkasaurus and Superpark always had really sick hips, many were step downs although cant find pics of any right now. Search youtube for clips from either and Im sure they'll have 'em.

It would be all time if you could somehow get permission to build a lip on upper gondi to gap the cat track and land on lower/mid gondi. Obviously it would most likely never happen because it would be a huge pain in the ass (you'd have to break it down right after shooting and only have it up for a day) and liability but it would be incredible. Plus it would be ridiculous to try to build a lip on something that steep, winching would be a pain I imagine. I've thought about that for a long, long time though.

Gotta put some angled wall features in for sure. Air into wall, air off the wall, tranny finder, etc... Mammoth built a big ass block of snow that was really sick too, could be used for a wall ride or butter tricks on top. Basically a 10 foot tall butter pad that was probably 20-30 feet long. Cool feature. Would be sweet to have a quarterpipe wall on one side and straight wall on the other for options.

I always loved gap rails too, 20 foot flat rail on top of a small table then 5-10 foot gap to downrail. Easy to make with park crew and pretty trickable plus they shoot well.

The gondi gap? It was hit a few years back for "Wild Stallions", fucking SICK! We could do that, it was discussed...

I love it when the lips for rails, or a full sized jump, has a roller built into it. They had one for a rail at mt snow last year and I saw it as a jump in the west coast sessions 6 edits.

That Gondi gap looks dope, also, in my opinion a jump or a rail on to or over or incorporating a lift, shack or building always is more photogenic.

maybe on the side of the trail a wall ride to wall ride with a gap in between. maybe a huge china doll. a massive straight up wall ride too, those are sick. like the ones in red bull plaza at bear mountain.

If you already have a decent size knuckle somewhere a big booter would be the easiest option. Make it a little bigger if needed and pull the booter back.


You could do that with minimal handwork.

This. Hips suck..they pretty much have to be hand done with an army...that's why that JOSS hip was so epic.

What trail is it gonna be on, Haywire? Sidewinder? Somewhere else? You want to make sure you have enough speed and room for whatever you build, plus have good scenery...putting that together is the real challenge.

Definitely go with a step-over style jump, 50-60+ feet is pretty good. If you can build the deck big enough you can add an up rail or butter pad on the deck with the jump...but it might not be what you're looking for in pictures. Since it's a photo shoot, it doesn't necessarily need to flow...one big jump, and then a rail garden somewhere else would be pretty fun. Could be a technical plaza setup, or a couple of big rails set up HUGE (up rails, rails set up on a platform with cheese wedged sides, ect). I'd talk with the athletes you're gonna have there, see what they're looking for, there the ones who have to hit it. Nothing worse than spending a couple 10 hour days to build something awesome and then have everyone not like it or think it's too sketchy...I speak from experience on this one.

When is this happening? I might be persuaded to come help build if I'm not busy...haha.

gondi line gap sounds sick, as does the loaf wallride up rail you have. maybe a jump over by bucksaw where they used to have the aerials jump. is this taking place post season? ive always thought a jump surrounded by dirt and grass would be sick, like build up the jump and landing then let it melt a bit so the surrounding snow on the ground is gone, but theres still enough run in and landing to hit it.

Seeing how the urban could be demolished (this would take a lot of fucking work), given all of the open terrain at the top of Burnt, if you set up some rails there that would make for some cool pictures.

Do something creative! Growing up on rage films, their steven's park shoot always comes to mind, the up or flat rail to two side down rails was always dope.

I like butterboxes that have like a dragonback and also have side booters off the side of the butter box onto the landing. Also, a large jump is almost mandatory.

Gotta have a setup kind of like the way the yard used to be set up.

1) throw in a big old stepup for people to go ham on
2) definitely elevate the sugarloaf rail or use some other sort of cannon feature (could be on the side of a jump to make it easier)
3) I think we still have the rollercoaster rail tucked away somewhere...
4) Setup a box in a way huge disasters can be thrown (enough air for 810s)
5) You gotta bring back that big blue wall ride

all of that would be epic.

Yeah all of those were crazy hand shaped. I remember talking to Oren Tanzer (mammoth park boss at the time) about that hip that Tanner hit way back.

Same story with all of them - fucking army of people hand cutting that landing.
