NS Front page?

Please excuse my ignorance but how does making NS front page work? I sometimes see videos and threads with few up votes and can't help but wonder how these things make front page. Also is there some sort of system with videos getting ads and how does that work? Any responses appreciated/+k.

I got a picture on the hompage before that only had 7 upvotes, just a wild guess but I think it might just possibly go by the most veiwed things get on the homepage.
