Hating on progression

I was just looking at the Jon Olsson thread about his new video of him throwing down in between racing laps and I began to think....Gotta love how NSers hate on people like Goepper and Bobby for being jock comp "robots" while loving Jon Olsson.

Before I deliver my opinion, let me make myself clear that I am a huge fan of all of the skiers in my post, I just don't understand NS's perception of some of them....Jon is probably the best example of a hardcore competitive skier that did not focus on style and solely focused on progression and hucking the next big trick. For those of you who don't know, he was the guy that got super pissed and defensive when people started doing doubles because he felt as if it was 'his trick' that he stuck first. I've heard plenty of firsthand stories about drama at JOSS because of his competitive attitude.

But back to my point...Why is most of NS so hypocritical? Why hate on certain skiers who are pushing the envelope while praising other monumental icons in our sport who pushed the envelope as well; either in the same or different ways...

I honestly think that it comes down to 19 year olds hating pro 19 year olds because they're jealous That can be the only logical explanation for all of the hate on this site. I keep reminding myself that skiing should be fun and that the hate is kept at a minimum in this community of ours, but I'm starting to seriously doubt that. I know I'm all over the place with this but I am just trying to understand how people can be so against aspects of the sport that really aren't bad or harmful to the overall cause/vibe in the least bit,..

I highly disagree. Jon has always been a huge proponent of style. I believe what you're remembering is when Jon called out Bobby for throwing sw dubs in his Dew Tour runs that were UNGRABBED.

I'm actually really surprised that the first couple of posts have been legit. This was meant to open up a forum so I can understand why people have a hatred towards certain skiers who, in most peoples minds, are good people who love our sport.

I mainly want to hear from the Goepper/Bobby/Gus haters out there....And try and form sentences, not just JAH BLESS ROBOTS SUCK FUCK YOU.

Agree to disagree... I think his style wasn't forced (which was impressive since he was pioneering crazy dubs) but I also don't think that it was the prettiest/smoothest style.

Even I'm a perfect example of what I am complaining about right now. Criticizing skiers who are far more talented than us and genuinely great proponents of our sport based on their "style"...It's silly shit if you think about it.

Jon pioneered the double cork.

Bobby was a pioneer in the triple cork movement.


Why is it not ok for Bobby and those guys to push tricks to the next level? Does adding another spin make it not cool enough by freeskiings current standards? Is it not cool to progress once you get to a certain point? It's human nature to want to move forward with whatever you're doing. Are they hucking triples 24/7? No. They simply mastered it just because they could and they can have it in their bag of tricks because its rad as fuck. To me, and to normal people in general, that is an impressive feat. Nothing wrong with pushing whatever aspect of anything that you dedicate yourself to...

I think its just that NS kids are so obsessed with petty shit like "B-Dogs ill butters onto rails and OG style" that they refuse to see anything else as cool or acceptable.

sometimes people get to into the style. now dont get me wrong, bdog wu tang edits are some of my favorite edits to watch, but i still appreciate when nick goepper throws a double rode while grabbing fucking SCREAMIN seamen. im not saying i prefer his style, but im sure as hell gunna give him props. not sure why all the people who say "fuck robots" say/think like that. /rant

I don't know if this is really what the thread is about, but it bugs me that some people think its impossible to mix style and technical tricks, Kai Mahler is a perfect example of a skier who can do extremely technical tricks with awesome style. You can't hate on trick progression because there are always going to be skiers who are doing all the craziest tricks with a huge amount of style.

I don't know if you're a troll or not but I feel like you're just reading too far into it. Jon has been skiing park for like 15 years. he's always been super steezy and innovative. people like nick and bobby are just the new age of progression whether people appreciate how they ski or not. their shit is hard to ignore when they're a couple of the very few people doin it. I am also super drunk and it's 715 am and I'm not sure what question I'm responding to

In my skiing world, there is no jealousy or hate.everyone can ride together and have fun. When people step it up and start sending, keeping up is a huge part of the fun. It can be difficult on the mind, but they have as much fun cheering you on for pushing yourself as you are watching them.

Contests are not for everyone. Its stressful to be able to huck on demand. It's nearly impossible to reach their level without training. But big woop! Im sure most of the pros today were riding alone for awhile.

In the beginning I hated on goepper because of his style. I've come around on the hate since the Olympics. I grew up watching Jon, but I have to say that going big and throwing crazy tricks had more of a focus back in the day than style did. Jon was a pioneer, he has hot babes (07/08 pro models were tits), sick cars, he's a playboy. Plus how many pros these days can go and absolutely rip a slalom/gs course then go throw a kangaroo flip?

People have different taste in style. If somebody is a Jets fan, they don't have to root for a different team because a different team is better. They root for their team. In skiing people root for the steez they dig.

I definitely don't hate progression but their comes a time as a skier where you can't help but feel all you can do is sit and watch from the sidelines as these skiers go an huck themselves. And I'll admit a big part of that is jealousy, I mean as much as don't like seeing triples become a staple, if I could do one and be pro, I would, its like a double edged sword ya know? It seems like a lot of people want skiing to be like skating today, which would be tight in my opinion, and the difference between style and progression is, is it cool to watch? or is it impressive to watch? Geoppers triples are no doubt impressive, but they're not that cool because so much happens so fast its not really elegant haha but P white's cork 7 blunts are really cool tricks, despite a crap load of people being about to em', you see it and you're like damn that was ill haha. It seems as if its a preference, do like watching impressive skiing or cool skiing?

Jon has given so much back to skiing, and he doesn't even need skiing to live the life he does. He's organized some of the coolest contests in freeskiing history, he can do whatever he pleases

The main reason people sometimes hate on them is the ridiculous money they make compared to other types of skiers. For example a guy like Cam Riley works probably just as hard during the winter to make Stept movies happen but clearly isn't paid as much as any competition guy, I think that huge monetary gap between comp skiers and street/movie skiers is the reason why some people kind of hate on highly paid competition skiers. But what they do is sick tho, the sport needs skiers like them as much as it needs "stylish" skiers.

OP, you are indeed taking ignorance to a new level. You are the very "kid" you proclaim to dislike. Your complete ignorance regarding freeski history is so blatant it hurts. You should stop talking about stuff you clearly know nothing about. Jon was always about style, he was famous for it. He didn't go as big in the pipe as Simon and Tanner, but always grabbed everything, and was smooth as fuck. He payed the price for this by always coming in 3rd, to a certain extent the same goes for slope, he always put style over hucking it.

So stop being ignorant and educate yourself before you try to talk shit. Kid.

Unfortunately, the amount of work you do in life doesn't give you a pay cheque. I'm sure Cam Riley is aware that his product is a niche market. While Jon has very much been a part of the mainstream freeskiing scene. Neither is right or wrong, but whatever is embraced by the masses will get paid.

Totally agree with you, I was just proposing a reason why there would be so much hate by the skiing community against comp skiers. I gotta say I'm not a fan of competitions but I still have respect for those athletes and you can't deny that they're bringing insane new tricks to the sport. And yes, urban skiers clearly don't do what they do for the money and they clearly know that, unfortunately, ski movies generally isn't where the big money is.
