I fell off a cliff today.

I was in a steep rocky area above a cliff band, kinda smearing turns, and I turned too low and/or too hard and hit some rocks, then I fell and rolled off a ~15 foot cliff and rolled into a tree. Broken tooth, broken helmet, broken goggles. Might go ski again tomorrow anyway.

That was at Telluride. Not too sure how it happened; all he sustained was a minor shoulder injury. I guess that speedcheck fucked him over because he contacted the cliff face a few times on the way down.

Even more brutal is this:

If I remember correctly, this was a ski patrol or something and he was skiing out of bounds or something. But still, I dont know how there was no indication of any cliff being there

Skier was at his own fault for skiing blindly over a blind spot. This is the problem with American skiers etc.. why should there be a sign above a cliff? europe hardly ever sign cliffs if its out of bounds or off piste... You have a thing called a brain

Pretty much every ski resort in Europe...
I know resorts with 130+ footers literally a foot step away from the next slope.

stop using shitty ski helmets!!!!! get a skater helmet made to hit concrete and not break!!! glad you were not hurt worse!!!! i fell down a 100' set of cliff bands the other day and my old skater lid saved me!!!

Not one of my brighter moments in life.

Got cliffed out at snowbird. Decided to take my skis off, ended up slipping and fell off a 40 ft cliff.
One of the scariest things I have ever had happen to me.

eh, some helmets, like skating helmets are made with a softer material that absorbs and bends so it can take multiple hits. My old helmet was a Bern hardhat and that is made with the same softer foam, the hardhat or skater helmet is just better in my eyes, more bangs for your buck. no helmet will keep you 100% safe plus my newer Anon helmet is hard as a rock and I hate it.

please nobody listen to this. They make specialized ski helmets for a reason, and the people who engineer the helmets know what their doing. Im pretty sure that 1 hit helmets are safer than skater helmets anyways

Yep and the Burn Hardhat can not be sold as snow sports helmet. It does not meet the minimum impact certifications. You can not compete in any sanctioned competition with that lid. I'm not here to debate the pro and con of the hardhat. The fact is any helmet is better than none, but Snow helmets are engineered to crush. Look at crumple zones on cars. They absorb the impact rather than push the impact back into you or your head. Claim all you want but they work and are doing exactly what we want them to do.

CPSC helmets are designed for greater impacts, but lose their integrity after a major blow and must be replaced. where as a "skate helmet" with just sweat pads and plastic is designed for multiple smaller blows without needing to be replaced and offers little protection to major blows.

source: I sold helmets for 4 years.

Single impact helmets are made from EPS. EPS is designed so that the foam will compress in the event of an impact.

Multiple impact helmets are made from EPP. Since EPP is not designed to compress in the way that EPS is, it will remain intact through multiple moderate impacts. However, it will not provide as much protection as EPS in any single impact, even the first impact.

If you want to save money, get a multi impact EPP helmet. If you want the safest helmet you can get, get a single impact EPS helmet and replace it if you hit it. The helmet I broke yesterday is the third ski helmet I've broken, I still use EPS. I'm willing to pay $100 every few years for the extra protection.

I can't remember specifically where it was on the mountain. I have only skied there a handful of times, so I don't know the terrain very well, hence my dumbass mistake I made.

I actually had it on my gopro for some time, but my buddy formatted the card and I lost the footage.

Right when I realized I was fucked, I decided to take my skis off and try to hike back up. That was a no go, I was rummaging through waist deep snow on a very steep slope. I was going nowhere and using up my energy fast.
No where to go, I decided the best thing to do was to throw my skis down, and try to side traverse this cliff. I threw my first ski down and it sticks in the snow. I then threw my second ski down, and watched it hit mach 3, and slide ALL the way down the mountain until I lost site of it.
At this point I am pissed about my ski, fearing that I would never find it, pissed at my self for getting myself in this dumb and very dangerous situation, and also very scared.
So I am clinging to some bushed or shrubs that are on this cliff, and i am trying to climb to the side to get down, when all of a sudden the shrub I was holding on to broke, and down I go. Easily a good 40+ feet.
I lucked out massively, skipped across a few rocks, and landed in the snow.
No injuries aside from torn pants, and a bruised ass.

Ripped pants reminds me. I was at Keystone (yes, Vail resorts suck, but I was an instructor at Afton so i got to ski free) in a closed area, but it wasn't marked as closed. I thought it was open. I ended up at the top of a rocky chute with no snow. Just a steep muddy slope with rocks sticking out and rock walls on either side. I took my skis off and tried to climb down but lost my footing and slid. I wanted to go back and take a picture from the top for the lulz and then find a different way down (that actually had snow) so I went back then it turned out there wasn't a different way down so the same thing happened again. My pants ripped.

Then the faggot mountain hosts or whatever blamed me for being in a closed area even though it's their fault for not marking it as closed. There wasn't even a rope along the border of the area, they claimed that because it's a treed area next to a groomer it should be obvious that it's a different run and might be closed even if it's not marked closed, and that I should only enter a treed area from the top so I can see if it says it's closed. Vail is so retarded.

if you've ever skied there, its usually pretty clear were that cliff is. Also, they can't put ropes over every single hazard on the mountain, that would just be silly

Hahaha, Yes I better have found it, as they are my fav pair of skis ever...JJ's.

After I fell off the cliff, and gathered myself. I sat down on my one ski, and slid down the run until I spotted a funny looking German guy waving at me with my ski in his hand. He asked me if I lost something.....
