whatsup guys, next year I might switch from snowboarding to skiing and I was wondering if hockey helps to get good at skiing. I've been playing hiockey for 12 years and I'm 16. will a hockey background help me with skiing .
Yes. Stopping (and thus turning) will come soon or right away since in terms of physics long as skis on soft snow stop easier than hockey skates which are far shorter on hard ice. When you get decent and start carving ski turns will be just like 90 degree or so hockey turns. Same idea to get an inside edge and lean into the turn. You'll progress quick if you are a good skater. Its only stuff like skiing moguls well that will take you some time.
Honestly yes, I played hockey for almost 6 years before I started skiing. And I was able to learn the basic skills way faster than some people. It doesn't help with park at all, but regular skiing definitely.
It really does, I come from a hockey family, literally everyone in my family played hockey for several years and the movements are really similar, you will just have to get used to how long the skis are but that won't take too long
yes, it helped me a great deal with edge control as well as balance and endurance. in terms of park it really won't help but towards becoming a good all around skier it will.
Yes, taken from HENRIK HARLAUT'S bio on historia website: "I kept going with hockey and Alpine racing until i was 15 years old because my brother told me that it would help my balance and such for the future"
It does, I started hockey and skiing both when I was about 5 so I can't truly vouch for this, but the movements are similar. Carving as opposed to pizza will come more easily to you than to others and stopping will most def help. It also doesn't hurt that you allready know how to board, getting on lifts and being afraid of going down a hill should not be a prob for you.
Yes it does help a lot. I had played hockey for about 4 years before I learnt how to ski and it did help a ton as far as edge control and parallel turning
