Edge Compression

Searchbarred and didn't really find anything useful, but if I am mistaken please let me know.


After skiing today i was putting my skis away when i noticed that the edge of one of my skis was split and part was jutting into the base of my ski, creating some what of a substantial "bubble" in my base. Ive seen it before pretty commonly on other peoples skis but mine looks like it will hinder my skiing ability if not taken care of. What can i do to repair this and if not repair it than make it less of a problem. Ill try to get pictures up in a bit. thanks

2 options... you can inject epoxy under the bubble then clamp the hell out of it, then base grind it flat... or you can cut the base away where it has bubbled, try to get the edge mostly straight (or at least push it back out of the core somewhat) then epoxy the hell out of it, then do a base patch.

The second option is harder but makes for a better repair.

thanks man. are you saying that i cut away the base where it pushed out, epoxy/move the edge out and then put that cut away piece back on like a patch? seems pretty sketchy to me. what ill probably end up doing is trying to pull the edge out of my base and if i can get that ill epoxy and clamp. if not ill bring it into the shop and see what they can do for me

make sure you let the epoxy harden correctly.  You will be good to go dude.

The problem is that to get any real purchase on the edge, in order to get it back out of the core, you really have to get in behind it - which means cutting a piece out of the base. Then once you've sorted out the edge and added some epoxy to strengthen, you get a new piece of ptex base material, cut it to shape, epoxy it in, clamp, then knock it down with a file or a base grind. You wouldn't try to put the old piece of base back in. This also means you can clean it all up nicely so it sticks back together properly. Done nicely it's no different to a diecut base.

that makes a lot more sense. The way my edge is situated right now is I can get behind the edge without cutting the base with a screwdriver, so i might try to bend the edge back if i can then epoxy that way. or if that doesnt work ill bring it into the shop and have them do what you suggested. thanks again
