The skis themselves are the cheapest plywood that their Chinese manufacturer can produce. $250 might seem like a good price, but in reality they are overpriced. (Surface has been known to promote these skis with a $1300 'regular price', but they readily admit that this is overly inflated gimmickry to make them seem to be a better deal.)
Performance-wise these are very average skis. Now, I've always believed that a patroller should be able to ski a 2x4, and these are not the worst ski that I've ridden, but for a new ski offered up to professionals, they should be far better. They are not a good all round ski, not a good trick ski, not a great carver.... The only thing that they offer is width, so if you want a good looking snowshoe...well I guess they'll do.
The looks. The graphics are eye catching, but... With the lackluster performance of these boards, the only thing that you are broadcasting is that you are more concerned with looks than performance. I would rather ski a non-decaled ski that worked well, than a glam ski that was this weak.
Ironically, with the looks being the only positive offering of these skis, you would think that Surface would be more attentive to detail. My skis came misprinted, as if the skis went into the laminator crooked. I felt the need to bring this to Surfaces attention, pointing out that it does not matter to me, but that they might want to know that clearly defective goods were slipping through their quality control. I received the most abusive reply from someone claiming to be their company head tearing apart me personally and the National Ski Patrol in general! When I replied (politely) that he might want to address his dislike of the NSP with the organization directly, and that I would be willing to forward our correspondences to the board, he replied, (from the same email name and address) that someone else had written these emails from him and if I sent him the skis (at my cost) he would refund my $250.
I should have taken him up on it, but I would have been left in the hole for shipping, (both originally from the factory and now to Surface, and left without skis and now with bindings that might not be a fit for whatever replacement ski I could find in mid season.
The long and short of it is, these skis are not worth even the lowest price. I'm embarrassed to ski them because they loudly advertise that you got tricked into buying a junk ski because of spiffy graphics. I would paint over the graphics, but the performance isn't worth taking them out of the rack. I spent last season on my old k2's rather than on the Surface skis.
Basically, don't waste your money.
