Camera Cage

I'm looking into either buying or making a camera cage. I want it to be more to protect the camera than to mount tons of things onto it. Any info/experience you have would be really appreciated!

Edit: Forgot to say I have a t3i with a battery grip and I will most commonly be using my Tokina 12-24, and a shotgun style mic that would either need to fit inside the cage or be mounted on the top.

For about a grand you can have a Zwiss cage.

http://www.photographyandcinema.com/ has some pretty nice ones that are reasonably priced. I have their GH3 cage with the 15mm rail add on and I would consider it well worth its $140 price tag. It doesn't inhibit any of the camera controls, is built pretty solid, and allows me to use a follow focus and eventually connect an external recorder for 10 bit if I upgrade to a GH4.
