I miss double chairs

I know they were slow as fuck, but honestly... the double chair was such a key part of the intimate relationship you'd form with fellow skiers.

Quads and 6-packs get people up the mountain faster, but nothing touched the bond of the double chair.

Right?

Good old Mt. Aurora Skiland, farthest north lift in north america. I think it is one of the oldest lifts still running too. They bought it from Silver Star in BC a looooong time ago. it breaks down fairly regularly nowadays but it adds to the character of the place. I love it.Click for larger image

Snowghost what up. Also Skibowl... I think the cons outweigh the pros for me though, I would rather be on a quad because Im usually shredding with friends.

Canons got one tht isn't super slow. It's new too, they built it just a few years ago. Great for getting chicks because it is such a long ride that you have to talk to then

teepee town needs a mid station so you can lap the good part without sitting in the freezing cold. no high speed chairs there though, would be too much traffic.

We have a double at Labrador and the stoned convos I have with ski patrols are unparalleled. Those dudes are fascinating and find our ridiculous shenanigans and choice of clothing equally as enticing.

Japan still has loads of them... along with some sketchy single seaters that are more like a couple of slippery planks zip-tied to a pole that you cling to for dear life if the chair gets a bit of an angle on.

The ultimate in camaraderie is still riding some janky rutted steep-ass T-Bar and requiring mad teamwork to get to the top in one piece. The one out of Cedar Bowl in Fernie had some days like that.

Although possibly this is topped by riding a rope tow when it has come off the pullies and 3 of you have to man-train the damn thing so you have enough weight on the rope to stop it lifting you into the air.

The double at Alta is the shit. It's cool how the chairs coming down aren't even connected to the poles, too. Super fun.

Thats the one I referenced with regard to Bishop, as he was a park staff at Blue in its glory days.

We were on the double at black mtn (it was pretty old and slow) and it stopped on the steepest part with rocks under it because of the wind. The chair going down was swaying then the seat flew off.. It was sketchy

I miss bumping double chairs, they are the easiest chair to bump and they are pretty damn bullet proof. They are the honda civics of the ropeway world that generally don't get any maintenance done to them but somehow keep trucking.

I mean there's also old north, which is what I grew up skiing on. My racing days was just lapping that chair over and over for like 17 years.

Badlands double is the sickest though. I'd argue that the park setup there is one of the most awesome in North America. When you have that super short, super packed park set up mint - like we used to do it - and you're always riding up the chair with a new person its unreal.

My whole gimmick used to be that any time a new person came into the park with twins on, I'd always lap up to them and ride the double. It was a short double, but you still got that really solid personal relationship.

I met a ton of my best ski people that way.

Homewood, Tahoe Donner, Mt. Rose, Mt. Bachelor, I don't believe Whistler does (T-Bars though), Timberline, Shasta...

I'm sure there's plenty more I'm forgetting.
