...were weak. I don't understand. There were good submissions, but I just don't understand some things about this competition. Why is Zac Moxley's edit more than 50% helmet cam shots when this is a competition for best filmer, and we've all seen how amazing his park edits can be? Why on earth is Jere Toivonen in the finals when his edit is literally a minute and a half of a headless body dancing in front of a white background? I really enjoyed Marcus Schultz, Robin Lee, and Zacahrie Turgeon's, but if the winner is supposed to go film at a park shoot, why would you not at least put a few skiing shots in there? Lastly, why is Mike Kvackay's edit not in the finals?



Hands down better than all of the finalists. I'm disappointed by Level 1's choices. I hope Joonas wins.

You may not know that there was a qualifying round. That's what Kvackay's edit that you posted was for. Those edits had to be at least 50% actions sports footage. Based on the entries that didn't qualify I'm assuming the top 10 were super well done. These finalist entries were all shot on a Sony ActionCam.

As for the actual entries, Jere's was super bizarre.. Seems like Moxley was too busy (or too lazy) to put any real effort in. But some filmers got some crazy good quality out of those little cams.

I thought Marcus Shultz's was super impressive. I'm still trying to figure out how he got the overhead train shot at :18.. Special hookups? Or was it mirrored..?

The finalists videos were all made with sony action cams, l1p picked the "best" filmers already and now they're just competing to get invited. Any of the top 10 could go to the shoot and do well, the point is to dig into the creative side of things and have these kids prove what they can do when given a challenge.

I thought ballards was the best, great mix of shot, good color grade, lots of audio which was lacking in other videos and he even put his action cam on his glidecam, smart choice.

The point of finals isn't to have some epic cinematography, its to test the filmers outside of their comfort zones.

The edit with the guy skiing in Mammoth. The only edit that sucsessfully told a story without being corny as fuck (handrail/flashback edit... WTF?) Great compositions, sick skiing, and overall a nice variated cinematography. And One of two that actually cared about enviorment and action sounds.

Marcus Schulz in 2nd, for the same reasons, but the one described above was a little better (imo). These 2 edits were really cool and enjoyable!

The rest... As OP said, Zak makes such rad edits and is a solid cinematographer, so when he submitt an edit like that im really, really confused.
The rest was pretty weak as well, i sat the whole time wondering why this and that edit are in the final in an filming/edit contest.
SERIOUSLY??

And the swimming and random dancing shit, WHAT THE FUCK? I guess they didn't say it must have contained skiing, or atleast some form of extreme sport, but when Level1 has a filming contest you actually expect skiing in all of the edits!

I know some of the people behind a few of the nominated videoes, makes full length skimovies them self and probably want to save the best shots for their upcoming film, and can't use shots that's allready out on the internet. But cmon, fuck, i donn't know. This makes me a little upset when i see i could easly have made a just as good edit as some of those with b-shots from last season.

Level1.... please explain, because this makes no sense to me.

I mean what do you guys really expect from some edits made with a POV camera?

Ballard is a great example of how one could've made an edit, there was no criteria for these finalist videos, they pretty much got to do whatever they wanted. Some people tried some weird things and they could've turned out cool but it didn't all connect.

This contest isn't just about finding someone who can make the best park edit, like I said before its about finding someone who can embrace a challenge and perform and clearly only a few of the finals actually succeeded but did you really think they would all be perfect?

The entries for this contest were pretty meh but of course most guys who you see on ns making edits did not enter because they didn't see any appeal from the contest. You guys are expecting this to be the super unknown of filming and really its not.


Side note, bummed j-cal missed the deadline, dude is super creative and would've killed it with the action cam, oh well.

Ballard's should win, I agree with that, he did super well.

I agree with Heath that it would have been awesome to see what j-cal would have come up with.

Most of all I'm super pissed that two of the finalists didn't produce. I don't remember who the second one was, but CrotchKiller/Jacob Marshall, that's so god damn selfish, to take a spot and then not make anything for the competition. That is honestly really frustrating to me that you'd not take the awesome opportunity this contest gives you, plus you're taking away the opportunity from other people who would kill for it.

Well, it's called FilmerUnknown, so that was my expectations. But ty for clearing up some confusion about this!

This is actually an exellent way to seperate the good from the not so good.

Ballard and Lee I like the best for sure.

I get it now that it's supposed to be what you can do with that Sony cam then, but still, some of the edits were a total disappointment (especially compared to other works they've done).

Im pretty bummed on how my video turned out, I entered the contest with high hopes of making something really sick and I had some amazing ideas, unfortunately I left Whistler last minute to go on a month urban trip and the camera had not been shipped to me yet.

By the time I had gotten home I only had a few days to finish up an entry, between school and other huge projects I had so much on my plate to fully focus on this contest. That being said, I feel bad and wish I could have given my spot to someone else.

Im sorry I let you guys down. I wish I could have put more time into this project!

Yeah where the hell was CrotchKiller?

One thing that did stand out to me, though, was the finalist video that was literally a guy dancing in front of a white background for the whole time. No motion, no creativity, no originality, all stupidity. What was he hoping to accomplish with making such a stupid video?

I don't know exactly where you're at with your career, and I understand it can't hurt to win stuff like this, but would this have done anything for you outside of what you already have going on? I'm just curious because you're edits and filming are already top notch and professional. And I feel like you're well known.

Dissapointment from quite a few of these. But there were still a few that I did enjoy. Ballards was dope. And robin lees was nice aswell

Not gonna lie, I think that's a bullshit excuse. Life happens, I get that, but I think you had to assume the responsibility upon entering the contest in the first place. Moxley got the shit end of the stick in regard to his entry, too, but at least he tried putting something together to at least show he appreciated the opportunity. You took the chance away from someone else who would probably be much more deserving. All I think is that it's still not okay to flake, even if you're swamped, because you assumed the responsibility of working for the finals when you submitted your entry vid.

Not gonna lie, I don't give a shit what you think. You can sit there and make all the assumptions you want. I have priorities, at the time filming that edit wasn't one of them. Also if someone was "more deserving" of my spot you would think that they would have made finals instead of me.

I'm with crotchkiller and sure it blows that a spot went unclaimed but why put a half assed product out there when you could do so much better. Life gets in the way sometimes and things take priority over a contest.

The reason certain people didn't join is because the whole competition is a sham - shameless advertising for Sony's POV cam via starry-eyed young videographers who want "in" on the industry.

I understand the argument to level the playing field in order to underline creative capacity (how many terrible videographers are shooting a RED Scarlet these days? I've lost count.), but I feel that this is a chickenshit excuse for two reasons: 1) it's a shameless plug for Sony, and 2) I'm not sure if making everybody use a fisheye POV camera is the best way to level the playing field. If you have to homogenize the camera rigs just to see aesthetic differences, something is not right. My fear is that this (like all POV contests) is going to become heavily content-oriented, which largely negates the artistic purpose of a videographer to begin with.

Yeah, going to take Gavin's side on this one.

If you're going to put time in to try to intern with Level 1 do it properly. Sorry Jacob and Guillaume, but this is a huge opportunity, one which I, Gavin, Mike K, or any humber of other filmers would've loved to have. Bummer about Zac getting shafted on shipping and shit, feel like he had a good shot...

Instead of giving each competitor some stupud pov camera which is a shameless ad for sony. L1p should of leveled the playing field by saying each filmaker starts with nothing and is given 2 grand each or something along those lines. They then must either buy new shit or "buy" there own stuff. So if they want to use their glidecam they must drop 450 on it or whatever the msrp is. This way everyone could use the gear they wanted. But making it more fair. I get that this is totally un realistic though

If you don't dig how they are doing it, ignore it.

That sony cam is pretty much why I backed off from doing the contest, and Honestly I'd rather just make my own shit on my time. Also, I need dividends for my work, I cant pull the intern shit anymore.
