Yeah, mystery solved sort of. It won't really be solved until they find the black box, and maybe not even then. Apparently the recordings are looped. If the pilots were incapacitated and the plane continued to fly for hours, the tapes may have recorded over the data that explained what happened. I hope that's not the case. It is still a mystery why someone in the flight crew would have manually turned of the transponders before the problem started.
I doubt it, the 777 is a reasonable modern plane and according to an unknown source, most FDRs record for approximately 17–25 hours worth of data in a continuous loop which would be beyond the maximum flight time.
Minimum is 30 minutes, but most don't record over a few hours. That's only for the cockpit voice recorder. I believe the other one, the flight data recorder goes longer.
The problem here is that even a few hours isn't enough. It may have flown for 7 more hours. For reference, an entire flight from new York to France is 7 hours. That's how long and how many miles it flew.
Tapes over it. It makes sense when you think about it. Crashes happen fast. And when they don't happen fast, usually they can still be tracked or communicated with.
That's what makes this look so deliberate. Shut down communications, disappear from radar, fly long enough to make the tapes useless, and crash somewhere that they are unlikely to find you.
Looking at manufacturing specs from CVFDR's / FDR's and CVR's I'm generally seeing 120min of cockpit voice and ambient audio recording and 25+ hours of flight data recording.
But CVR's do work in a continuous loop so if they find them you would have the last 2 hours of the cockpit recording and pretty much all of the flight data since the 777-200ER has a range of 17K miles (±19 hours of flight).
But then again, they do have to find those buggers and at the bottom of the ocean, that's not easy.
Completely fucking retarded. Sure the pilot would head to the runway and that's all okay, but the author's knowledge of 777 systems is brutal. You can't just cut all electronics in the event of a fire, certain things (transponder included) require much more than a simple switch to disengage. Also the Swissair crash he cites as having it's transponder and comms turned off is complete bullshit, went over the accident report and the transponder was not turned off.
I just want to keep hope that it didnt just crash into the indian ocean. I wish its not true. All this time and they say 'its lost'. Like comeon I wish there was a better story
Would it make you feel better if I told you that an invisible comet passed through earth's atmosphere and escaped again, the gravity of which acted as a slingshot for the plane which made it go into orbit. Then they hit a debris field created by the comet and the entire movie of gravity was based off of this event which happened after the release of the movie?
At this point I really really hope it did crash into the ocean. Would be much better than having the plane stolen/hijacked. They just need to find something..
its kinda weird how they said "yeah we found it, there is 100% confirmed debris on satellite images". then, they cant find anything else but unsettling amounts of "regular" garbage and all of a sudden the search is blown off.
i understand the black box signal thingy, but shit went quiet fast. like it seems "proven" that the plane flew south for a few hours but noone added any evidence for that.

Not trying to be a sky is falling guy, but this makes the most sense considering that all the experts agree that the transponders were switched off manually. The only reason to do that is if you don't want ATC to know what you are doing.
I've been following this one pretty intensely and I really can't see how such a situation involving such a large plane is possible. Even Airliners.net has dried up to about a post every 30 minutes when it was one about every 30 seconds 2 weeks ago. This is gonna be one of the mysteries of our generation it seems.

Hmm, who ever did that math used 200m, not 2000m. This leads me to believe that they are poor scientists, and that mega shark has been dangerously underestimated.

Have any of you people realize the amount of masses of garbage seen that were mistaken for plane debris. If we keep polluting the ocean like this it could seriously wipe out all of us with on the next 50 years.

If we keep dumping enough crap in the oceans we can reclaim 70ish% of the earth's surface, have enough place to harvest crops, install solar panels, house people and if planes crash we can actually find them easily.
Obvious climate changes aside I'm going to pitch my brilliant idea to the UN.
