Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight

Ground loses contact with flight from Kuala Lampur to Beijing. Says they would have run out of fuel by now. Pretty crazy stuff.

For real... I think theres really only three possibilities now. One is the one from that 'Simple explanation' article that was posted the other day, another is that someone literally stole the plane and it was landed somewhere, and the last is that it crashed somewhere so unexpected that wreckage just hasn't been seen yet. Its pretty scary that any one of these is plausible with ZERO evidence of the plane. Even with the France plane that took 2 years to find, they found a tail of the plane a few days later. Its just bizarre. They'll probably make a crazy movie about it someday though...

Yeah I think it probably suffered massive electronics failure, meaning all transponders and navigation aids were immediately disabled, but the flight crew was still able to fly the plane. Without navigational aids, they were left blind over thousands of miles of ocean, and eventually ran out of fluel and crashed.

There's no way a pilot unintentionally flew for 5 hours into the middle of the ocean. They would still have a compass and other basic navigational aides

would they though? if you're out over the ocean and get all panicked because of whatever electronics failure is happening you could divert slightly off course, which over hours makes you ridiculously off course..

who the fuck knows man, im still saying it's the langoliers. they went through a fucking portal and went back in time

Right that's what I was saying. Being one degree of course when you're going hundreds of mph is catastrophic. Especially if the pilots lost track of their position on the flight plan, which would explain the sudden left turn as either a desperate attempt to find land or a planned turn on their flight plan just executed too early due to lack of instruments.

A big problem in aviation has been the flight crews inability to operate their aircraft without technology. Basic functions can be forgotten when not performed for years, which I'm sure they haven't had to navigate with a chart and compass since flight school. Also, when you have 250 lives as we'll as a $200 million plane in your hands, a slight mistake would be huge.

if that other military radar signal was correct, they basically made more than 90 degree turn. and nearly everywhere are landmasses to land on, literally except in that one direction where the military radar got that signal.

I hear ya, and Air France 447 is a great example of that confusion. In this case though I don't see how if they are in an emergency situation they fly over land twice after making that turn. It was night so they would be able to see plenty of lights below them, and at least one of the pilots knew the area very well

Flying over water at night like that can throw anyone off. Even something like a slow 90 degree turn can go unnoticed.

Different example, but look at JFK jr when he crashed. Much smaller plane and less experience, but they think he was flying almost upside down when he hit the water and had no idea.

The captain was a 20 vet... He obviously knew how to fly an airplane without computers.

I still think they made the 90 degree turn to land at Langkawi because of some failure and then both the pilots passed out, flew right over the landing strip. Then ran out of gas took a nose dive into the ocean.

Why would they say goodnight after making the turn if they were in danger and headed to an emergency landing? Doesn't make sense to me. The turn would have had to happen after they said goodnight for any sort of failure to make sense. I believe someone on the plane meant for the plane to go off course unnoticed.

I was more of just saying I have a hard time believing a 20 year vet pilot just "lost his bearings" and took a nose dive. There are basic navigation instruments in the plane that dont involve gps. Then just added my two cents of what I still think happened, no one actually knows what happened.

and...? Yeah its the most famous, but most attacks are either suicide bombings, car bombs, or bombs left on trains or busses. Planes are too high risk, low reward for your average terrorist.

But when it does happen, people usually freak out a whole lot more.

Here are some plane hijackings:

Most werent successful but attempts for hijacking aren't evern close to "extremely rare"

When I said "extremely rare" I was referring to the fact that successful hijackings that result in deaths of hundreds are rare. I did not mean in any way that all hijackings are rare.

yeah im talking terroist hijacks that are used to kill more than those just on the plane. Those are pretty rare, but do happen.

I think realistically a bigger threat are attacks at sports stadiums, but the NFL, NBA, MLB and homeland security/NSA take that pretty seriously. However if someone managed to get a medium sized home made bomb into a sold out college game, that would be bad. And also way too doable.

Yeah but his plane was also doomed to crash from the start. If I remember correctly it was a Beechcraft or something similar and the right prop shaft was bent causing the prop to oscillate slightly. I believe that was what brought the plane down.


Also, how would you not know you were upside, or near upside down. You would at least feel the blood rush to your head...

no he was in a piper. Official report never mentions a bent prop shaft either. Just that he was completely disoriented and basically had no idea what he was doing due to inexperience.

I heard something new today. They finally confirmed that they know that the transponders were turned off manually. Didn't catch the technical details, but they can tell that they were switched off as opposed to electrical failure or catastrophic midair event. The expert said that the way the transponders were switched off was identical to the way they were switched off by the 9/11 hijackers. The way the expert describes it, there is a split second where the transponder can be turned off without triggering some kind of alarm.

as ridiculous and crazy as that is, its really not a bad idea from their perspective. Without the western world and media pushing their politicians to make Russia stop being dicks, Russia could get away with a bit more. Still very far fetched, but its at least a lucky coincidence for Putin.

My father works for Boeing and so he has a lot more insight into how plane systems work compared to most people. Both the transponder AND the ACARS systems were switched off. These are on separate circuit panels with separate breakers on separate redundant systems. You don't ever lose both at the same frame of time and then keep flying without doing so on purpose. The "simple" explanation that has been going around is bullshit, mostly because the cockpit is sealed from the front-gear compartment for the exact reason that a fire there might interfere flight, and again there's no way someone would take the time to switch off the transponder AND the ACARS without taking the time to make a distress call, especially if the plane was in distress. As for why we haven't found it yet, the ocean is an unbelievably large place. It will probably be years before we ever know what really happened, but the chance that "foul play" was involved is very high.

That "sofrep" report is bullshit. The emergency oxygen systems are designed to operate and provide (brief) supplemental oxygen ONLY at the max service ceiling, not the 40-45k feet the plan supposedly went up to.

It supposedly gained 10k feet in about 5 seconds, from flying level. That didn't happen. It was on the edge of the radar coverage, it's far more likely that this is a radar error that's been over-reported by the media than the plane suddenly gaining superpowers.
